Those who have been to Costasur before will be in awe of the improvements. It is absolutely stunning what they have done to the reception area and the dining room and the bars and the pool area and the bungalows. 
While the restorations were going on, people (from Canada at least) were sent toca neighboring resort (considered to be an upgrade), but any Canadians I spoke with preferred Costasur. Especially the bungalows.  
Great, attentive staff. Good food. A real gem.  

A real gem - back and better then ever.

We can not understand the previous horrible reviews for Costasur, We did not regret booking this vacation at any moment. The flight with Air Transat was good, the transfer to and from the airport was efficient and organized with incredible views thru the mountains. We were well taken care of upon arrival and escorted to our beautiful half of a bungalow on the beach. An enormous room and bed, clean and comfortable, the bathroom equally good with never a lack of hot water. We loved the location, so close to the beach and beach bar and a short stroll to the main lobby and the buffet. We never went hungry and especially enjoyed the fresh shrimp cooked on demand, the roast pig and ice cream. The staff on the entire resort was friendly, helpful and always have a smile for you. We didn't use the pool, being beach people but looked, clean, cool and inviting.They were constantly making improvements all over the resort, new stairs, new murals, new loungers, new beach umbrellas, the entire time we were there. And Trinidad is a hop on/off bus away that runs daily. A beautiful, old city with handmade souvenirs, not the factory stuff. And we suggest a horse carriage ride thru the city to see all the sites. Incredible. We also used a local guide Hector Hernandez (hectorguidecienfuegos@gmail.com) who with his driver, picked us up at the hotel and took us to El Nicho Falls. We had an awesome hike, lunch and were returned to the hotel for a very reasonable price. And on top of it all, the entire two weeks, we did not see one drop of rain. We were also included in an awesome repeaters celebration as it was our second but not our last to this beautiful little gem. Was our 11th trip to Cuba. Thank you Club Amigo

Awesome Vacation

I returned from yet another vacation at my favourite Trinidad home, love this hotel. There's been a lot of updates since I was here last November.

The first notable change is at the lobby got rid of those terrible red couches from the Breezes hotel  that they put in briefly last year. They've installed beautiful brand-new rattan  lounges and chairs, with really nice neutral fabrics with flashes of gold metallic in it. Looks really nice and inviting. And they are comfortable too!

In the lobby there is no longer a computer desk. The hotel now has Wi-Fi in certain areas, but not in the bungalows. In the main lobby and the pool area you will get the best reception. You no longer buy an internet card from the desk. You buy your internet time from the desk instead and they give you the code to be able to use the internet. Usually one cuc for one hour.

The hotel and bungalows have been entirely refreshed with new paint. The entire hotel is a lovely Caribbean blue and white now. It looks really warm and inviting. The footpaths have had new lights installed in places, and lights updated with better bulbs in other places. The back path to the bungalows definitely has better lights installed. . Currently some of the pavement walkways in that area are still broken and they will be repairing that later on as they renovate the hotel. You still don't need a flashlight anymore. Along the right side of the hotel, the path leading from behind the dining room to the bungalows is extremely well it now. There are flood lights across the way where they're building the new Melia hotels, and it lights up the whole area. All of those cedar trees along the pathway have been completely thinned out.

With the renovations, the snack bar is being moved to the right side of the pool area will you now have your snack bar and your drinks. That apparently was opening the day after I left on November 17th. Can't wait to see it when I go back! It looks like it's going to be really big and gorgeous! In the old space where the old bar was, they're looking at making it into a disco for the future. That'll be attached to where the entertainment is at night. It'll be a really good Improvement! The pool area has also been updated and has many new umbrellas oh, so there's now lots of shade available. The loungers look pristine and new, and the pool was clear and clean daily!

 The grounds themselves, are well maintained with a lot of the trees around the Bungalows removed so no more mosquito and dragonfly now! I see that they're installing little palm trees ib  different areas of the grounds now. For the beach, there is multiple Palapas, plenty of new loungers, are the beach is clean and debris free. I understand that the two stairways that go down from the Bungalows to the beach entrance will be updated with new ones shortly.

The Bungalows themselves have also been painted inside and out. Nice and refreshing! And I noticed that we have new pillows- wonderful Improvement in the Bungalows LOL all of the Bungalows now have their own independent hot water tanks, I never had a water shortage, it was always nice and hot, hotter than it's usually been in the past even! Aside from that, there was always a great water flow with the pressure. They updated the Bungalows also with new blow dryers, and added an additional towel racks. Two big blue bath towels are now in the room when you arrive. You no longer have to go and pick them up.

For the dining room in the food, it has also had a refreshing upgrade. The tables no longer have tablecloths. Instead they have really nice woven table runners. It's a nice modern touch, and it looks much cleaner and fresher. Not to mention that stains don't show on them! They had some updated food presentations made of fruits, vegetables, Etc. The whole food stations are the same, but the way they are presenting the food is very much updated and adds a certain amount of charm to the buffet area. 

The service in the restaurant is vastly improved! Most times I was always able to find an empty seat, with the flatware napkins and stemware already on the table. They did have a few very large groups show up maybe two hundred or so at a time, when the dining room was packed. And these cases if you waited for 2 minutes you would grab a seat. Turnover was really quick. The other thing is when you have this many people in a full dining room and somebody leave the table to give you an empty seat, you might have to wait just a moment or two to get your table reset with flatware napkins and stemware. The staff is extremely attentive to you in this situation. You no longer have to go hunting for your own Cutlery! They watch for you when you come in and if your table is not set they do it immediately. 

The only issue I saw at all, was that the usual coffee machines that they have for your breakfast and lunch service were not working correctly. This is to be expected as the machines are old and will be replaced shortly. However they have taken care of this situation too! They now provide large urns with fresh brewed coffee, that is replenished continuously. I never had to wait for more than a moment or two. The milk still comes from the prior machines, but the coffee is fresh, strong, and hot and perfect have a great Cuban breakfast.

At times with the busy turn over with so many guests, you might have to wait a moment or two for a fresh coffee cup or for an ice cream cup. This is never a problem though. You don't have to wait long like you used to. It seems that as soon as the tables are cleared when you leave, they pushed the cart back into the kitchen and the dishes are immediately washed and replenished. Really, is not an issue to wait for just a moment to have fresh clean dishes! At a vast improvement over prior years.

The food was plentiful. Always had pork, fish, or chicken on the grill. Sometimes at lunch they have the grilled hamburgers or hotdogs. I've always disliked the Cuban hamburgers and hotdogs before. But I did try them this year. Those hamburgers or the tastiest ones I have ever tried even in Canada! I think I fell in love with the hamburgers in Cuba this year for the first time LOL there is always fresh eggs for breakfast, there's always fresh orange juice or mango juice available. There's a really big selection of salads at all times during the day. Plentiful potatoes and squash, always butter, and sometimes even flavoured butter! There was always fresh bread, always watermelon and citrus available. For the first time ever in Cuba I saw there was broccoli and cauliflower! On most days, there was always the fresh lettuce and grated cabbage for salads. However after they had the really big groups through there's a few days where these were not available. That's normal after a big group. I'm sure they were replenished for the next week as per usual. There is usually many little bananas, the tomatoes were there a few times, however from my time in the city the week prior I understand that it's not tomato season, and they are not there this often at most Cuba and resorts.

In summary, I've always loved this hotel as my second home. Yes it is older. However the updates that they have done have been a spectacular Improvement. I had a blast, love going home

We stayed here in a beach bungalow 3 years ago and it was great, so good we decided to rebook for another 3 nights on this trip, what a costly mistake.  We arrived at the Hotel with our booking voucher and invoice having already paid £312 for our bungalow only to be told they did not have our booking and it had been cancelled by the booking agent, first we heard about it and we had never been refunded.  As its Cuba and previous experience told us be patient there are often mix-ups and mis-communications we gave the hotel the benefit of the doubt, they promised to investigate but didn't have a bungalow for the night and we would have to stay in the main hotel building, and surprise surprise, we would have to pay for another night's accommodation at a cost of $144!  As we had had a long journey down from Vinales and couldn't find the energy to go looking for alternative accommodation on New Year's Day we decided to pay (the hotel would only accept cash!) and hoped everything would be sorted out next morning.  In all our years travelling and including 6 trips to Cuba over the years, this is the WORST hotel room we have ever been in.  The room was absolutely filthy, the curtains were black with filth and would not close, the patio door to the balcony was broken and completely unsafe, every area in the room was covered in dust and filthy, there was no other word but disgusting for the state the room was in.  We raised this with the Hotel Management at Reception and told they would investigate to no avail.  In the last 3 years the hotel grounds, the beach adjacent to the hotel and everything else in the complex have gone completely downhill drastically, there has been no investment and its almost as if the hotel is being deliberately having its facilities dis-invested in, funnily enough a brand new hotel is being built just down the road from here, hopefully a full replacement.  I would not write such a bad review without having spoken with the staff at a hotel and given them the chance to rectify but words cannot describe how bad the room and complex were and the staff we discussed our issues with were simply not interested. Our booking issue never did get resolved and we left next morning, having to find another hotel and pay again in the town of Trinidad.  We know what to expect in Cuba and do not have high expectations but this could not have been worse, I felt sorry for the extremely capable restaurant staff who were extremely pleasant and hard working.  Even the small beach right outside the bungalows was dirty, messy with rubbish and unkept, disgraceful!

Returning here after 3 years was a big mistake we will never return

This should be downgraded to a 2 star. I know people have been going to the hotel for over 20 yrs and love it, but they are all in their 80's and eat mushy food. So yes great place. I have travelled all over the world and have never stayed in a worse hotel, I have been to Cuba 9 times and have stayed in 3 star hotels before but never like this one. Thank goodness for a great SunWing Rep Levy which made my trip bearable, and of course the staff, weather. The management needs to be more careful with dealings of clients, I needed a room change and they gave me a very hard time until I had my rep speak with them. No hot water for 7 days, food terrible no good selection with buffet (not much served), no bread for 2 days, 1st day we did not have any water and power kept going off (we were to get bottle water but never given we had to buy). The snack bar was the best place to eat at the pool, they were great. They need to get toilet paper in the washrooms, I always carry but was sharing with guests. Will never go back to this hotel but will go elsewhere so I can visit the wonderful people working there.

Over 50 yrs of traveling worst hotel ever

Just home from Cuba.... and want to turn around and go back!  This was our second time at Club Amigo Costasur.  We will have to come back or stay much longer to rival all the other repeat and/or long term guests.  I would recommend this hotel to like minded individuals looking for a relaxing, friendly cuban experience.  

We had the good fortune of arriving in the daytime and so had our first "excursion"  included in the 2 1/2 hour air conditioned bus ride through villages and mountains  to arrive at the hotel. Even more of an adventure in the dark!

Reading other reviews, I do understand some of the criticisms that come mostly from frustration or being uninformed or ill advised.  We were  fortunate to go with friends that were very familiar with the ways of the hotel, which facilitated our feeling at home and being prepared.  I also enjoyed this trip even more than our last one for that reason.

I found most of the staff very friendly and helpful. Some were a little reserved but all responded to a smile and attempt at spanish.  I was a little surprised that more english wasn't spoken but for me it added to the cultural aspect.  

Liyenis, the public relations director spoke very good english, has a great sense of humor and was always willing to go above and beyond to resolve any problems.  At one point we thought my husband may need medical treatment and she offered to have the doctor come to us... and to fill out any necessary forms for insurance.  We did not end up needing this but she seeked us out afterward to be sure there was nothing we needed.

We totally recommend the excursion to the waterfall.  It was excellent... well-organized  and the guide (nick named Leche?  also called Lazarus) was so knowledgeable and funny and spoke excellent English. We had people from Romania, Mexico, Malta, and so many places that it added an extra element.  Most had travelled 12 to 16 hours to get to Cuba, which made us feel very lucky to have is so easy.

Okay... back to the resort...  I could give some advice to first time visitors based on my limited experience.  Exchange your money for cucs at the airport.  Often they did not have cucs  or had limited amounts at the resort.  A source of frustration I'm sure for guests and staff alike.

We bring our own water bottles (Contigo containers)  The bar staff are happy to fill them for you at the beach and save multiple trips to the bar for small plastic glasses of your favorite drink.  They are also happy to fill them with coffee...water or sparkling water.  There is a pitcher in the room for water that they will also fill at the bar.

Bring bug spray... with deet.  I'm not sure if it is no see ums or sand fleas or both but even if you don't see them or feel them.... you may when you get home.  They like some of us better than others.

Beach towels (blue) are supplied in the rooms....but if you didn't know this and they were short....you may think there weren't any.  Also.... if you like a wash cloth....(I do)  bring one.

The food..... eggs or omelette on the grill every morning....meat at other meals... some better than others.... We had good fish... ham.... and Turkey.  Lots of lettuce and cabbage for salads.  I wish I had brought Catalina (salad dressing). Never did make it to the pool bar that i understand has all day french fries, hotdogs.... and other familiar north american fare. We have never nor have our friends had any issue with fruit, Ice cubes or the filtered water from the bars for intestinal issues.

Last but not least the red wine was great!  The icing on the cake.  Jose... Lazaro... The dining room girls and the many nice young men serving bar and in the dining room made us feel welcome and appreciated.

Trinidad is a 10 cuc taxi ride and Casa de la Musica is a must. We spent every day swimming at the beach with a view of the mountains, and every evening taking one more picture of the sun setting over the sea. Doesn't get better than that.

A Bungalow on the Beach!

Small resort. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Food is always fresh and good. Excellent small beach for young children and beach bar service is great. great snorkeling steps away along the beach. Two thumbs up!

Great resort

An avrg Hotel , but good enough to stay in especially if there are no others.
Practically at the beach , with billions of midges !!!! Be aware as we were all biten and even 1 week after the stay , we feel badly ! Problmes with warm water/sometimes even with cold water , but this is typical for whole Cuba 

evening show, rather small rooms with free safe, reasonable food.
The biggest advantage is the proximity to Trinidad ( ca 10 km/6 miles)
