Rough Guide recommended Paraiso Perdido Hotel, which took a bit of finding as it had no name on it (new ownership??).
We were shown to room number 1 which had a distinctly sewer-y smell. Well, that happens I guess. Girlfriend flushed the toilet and...faeces-infused toilet water flooded up into the shower.
We were shown to room number 2. The wall behind the shower exposed the pipes and the shower dripped constantly. But! The room had a very welcome AC unit...which didn't work. We asked how to get it to work and were told that due to power restrictions the AC would only turn on after midnight. "But" we said "it is baking hot now. Can we not at least get a room with a fan?"
We were shown to room number 3 with a rickety ceiling-mounted fan which seemed about ready to fall on us at any moment. "We'll take it". The front desk lady tried to extract 500 more pesos for this working fan, but when we baulked at paying extra she agreed to check with the manager, and never came back.
There was no Wi-Fi.
We could not pay with credit card, cash only.
The pool was nice though. That's why it gets 2/5 not 1/5.

AC...at midnight; crap...in the shower

We stayed a few nights at Paraíso Perdido after driving around in the area looking for a place to stay. This was definitely our best option around and it had all we needed. It wasn't terrific, but it wasn't bad either. The rooms were very spacious, that was a big plus. There is also a pool where you can hang out and the deck where breakfast is served is nice too. Dinner is a bit overprices for what you get but the fish was delicious. The only down side was breakfast. We specifically asked what time breakfast would be served because we had a long travel day ahead and we wanted to leave early. They told us we could have breakfast at 7:15 but it wasn't ready till 8:30. We were a bit disappointed and waited for a long time only to find out that there was no fruit and no eggs, just a toast with some cheese (the day before we had all the above mentioned). If we knew, we would've just left at the desired time. Andrea was a great host though and we felt like this place wouldn't function nearly as good without his presence!  

The best we could find

If you are coming to paraiso you are limited as far as hotels go. Just be prepared. You will lose electricity and water at any given time of day. In august the weather here is incredibly hot. There is not much breeze. You can fall asleep comfortably with the ac then middle of the night wake up sweaty and gross with no help from opening windows. If you want to take a break from the beach, pool or river you may come to your room and have no running water, and electricity like what I am experiencing at this moment. The hotel has character and the breakfast is basic dominican food.

Good and bad just be prepared

This is a clean small hotel across a great beach in a very quiet town called Paraiso, this is about 30 minutes from Barahona on hwy 44. The hotel has its own little restaurant, it has wifi , but only reached the upper lobby area not in the room. The rooms are very basic and the building is not built that nice but for the area its ok, the important part its clean, the owner and Italian is very friendly and provides great service. Power can go off in the city but the hotel has a generator. There is really nothing to do here but relax and hit the beach, the beach has small rocks and some sand, but the water is amazingly clear. If you are going to Perednales this is a good stop from Santo Domingo to break the trip in half. Food is expensive that would be my only negative in this hotel. Rate is fair for the acomodation, pool is nice and upstairs sitting area comfortable.

I really enjoyed my stay here.
The ower did everything himself as that is what he also does for living.
Great love to so many details in the whole hotel, big rooms and ocean view when you are in the first floor. Pool is not huge but does the job and is very clean.
You feel very save, there is always security!
