Very good choice in case you do not want to stay in the hotel. This place has a specific atmosphere, some things are little bit older and they should be repaired but it s really cool place to hang out in the middle of palms, flowers and beautiful garden not far from busy beach and centre of the town. It s not a hotel, but a very nice place with the stylish dominican accomodation. 

I was expected terrible things but it was amazing on the end!

A local language school arranged the accommodation, so I pre-paid for 28 nights. However, on arrival, it was clearly sub-par, even by DR standards, so I immediately requested a better room. After three nights I was given an acceptable Studio (which would have overlooked the pool IF there had been windows overlooking said pool!! Instead there was a nice little entrance patio that overlooked..... a wall).
After about 11 days I was told I would have to move back into the original sub-par room as the studio had been booked. I declined and asked for a different studio. That request was declined, so I gave notice I would be leaving after 13 nights.
THE MANAGER & THE OWNER BOTH REFUSED TO RETURN 15 PRE-PAID NIGHTS' ACCOMMODATION.
THEY KEPT C$277 OF MY DEPOSIT!

On the plus side, the restaurant is very popular though expensive by DR standards, and the location is good - only a 5-minute walk from Cabarete town centre and the main beach.

Good location, but they kept (stole?) my deposit!! Not recommended.

Ali's came recommended by the local language school - I should have ignored the recommendation.
I paid 50% down for 28 nights accommodation arriving Jan 14th, 2023.
The room I was given was seriously sub-standard even by DR standards. I immediately asked to be moved. A studio was offered after 3 nights - it was acceptable, not great, so I paid the balance.
After 10 days I was told I would have to move back to the original room, but this was unacceptable, so I gave notice I would leave after night #13.
I asked for a refund of the 15 unused nights and was refused. I lodged a complaint with PayPal.

* the stove-top in my studio went up in flames - flames were coming out of the holes where the knobs were, which were melting and which made turning the burners off impossible. Fortunately I had just taken the propane tank out from under the burner to check how much gas was in the tank. That made it very easy to reach the valve. Had the tank been under the stove I am sure I would have been burnt trying to reach the tank's valve. The stove-top was replaced promptly, though I was cautious after, and kept the tank outside the closet.
* the General Manager, Jimmy, was curt, unhelpful and occasionally rude. The other staff were quiet but helpful.
* on two of my 13 mornings there was no water for bathing or flushing.
* all the buildings are really run-down. A few have even been abandoned. The laundry hut got a new palm-leaf roof while I was there - it took three roofers four days to complete the job.
* the restaurant is quite popular in the evenings, though the food is expensive and nothing special. 
* the restaurant  is not open for breakfast, and lunch has to be requested in advance. 
* there is no check-in desk except for the kitchen itself. There are no staff available until about 11am.
* I would occasionally ask for hot water (for my own tea-bag, as tea was not on the menu) - the staff would put a large pot on the stove with a little water in it - I was surprised the restaurant kitchen did not have a stove-top kettle.
* there is no bar, only tables. I seriously doubt Ali's could come up with any cocktail - it's really limited to wine or beer.
* there are at least a dozen dogs running loose around the place - a few are resident, but most are strays. The strays bark incessantly during the night. There are three resident cats which are nice and tame.
* the restaurant bathrooms were difficult to find. So many guests must have complained that by my final night there a sign appeared indicating where they were.
* the lagoon is attractive: there was one great white egret, a couple of black-crowned night herons and a handful of purple garallules.
* the pool area is OK, but the patio and lawn furniture were in poor shape.
* both the rooms I stayed in had room safes attached to the floor, however both had had their original locks broken, replaced by a flimsy hasp and a tiny suitcase-style padlock & key. Thus the two safes that I saw were a bit of a joke.
* in 13 nights my room was cleaned and linens changed once.

Note that, as per most of the DR, you cannot discard toilet paper in the toilet - it must be placed in the bathroom garbage bin. This is not a complaint about Ali's - it's common everywhere here, but it still comes as a shock to first-time visitors.

A terrible horrible no good very bad experience. And no refund for unused nights = theft.

The communication upfront was very cumbersome, always slow responses. Once I got there, the staff was again not very helpful, e.g. I asked if they could get me a taxi for the next morning because I had to catch a bus. They said yes and then no taxi came and nobody was there to help me. Worst was that they did not pay back the deposit they asked for in the beginning. They never responded to my messages after I left and since nobody was present when I left, I could not ask anybody directly. Will never stay again.

Maybe years ago it was a good place, but it is so rundown now, I had a reservation for a one-bedroom apartment with air conditioner but when I arrived, I was given a room with a broken air conditioner window unit, sharing an untidy kitchen with strangers!!!!  The owner doesn't care and the daughter who handles the reservation doesn't know how to run a business, you don't require a deposit and take a reservation without providing what you have confirmed.  The laundry area is filthy, it is under an old raised cabin, mixed with broken messy storage items, open-air exposed to dirt and dust and bugs, so unhygienic!  I spent one night there because it was late after traveling all day from the US, but the next morning I found a much better hotel to stay for the rest of the week.  There are so many nice hotels in the Cabarete area with reasonable prices.  Unless the owner is willing to shut down this camp and do some serious cleaning and renovating, it's not a pleasant place, not safe, definitely not for a vacation, not for international travelers to stay in such a filthy rundown place regardless of the price!  Don't make the same mistake I did!

COMPLETE DISASTER!

А restaurant maybe no problem. I have not say something wrong about a restaurant, usual street food approaches with not street food price. But don't put you in the risk by staying there as accommodation. I don't know what's wrong with owner Ali and his daughter, but this is already 10 or more years of terrible review.

I stayed 1 month there, though planned staying for at least 2-3 months, but did run away, though price was ok. Again 15 dogs. Dogs are sick with some deceases.  Dogs on the beds, dogs on the sun lounger, Ill dogs hidden under beds of neighbourhoods. Most seems street dogs. Barking at night without a reason, indeed because ill. 

This is not about love dogs or not. This is not about support. They taking healthy and sick dogs from the streets and collecting them together in hotel, without proper care which means infecting both dogs and people. In previous reviews you see similar about dogs and rats. Also many another terrible things. 
And they deceived about number of dogs and origin of dogs. 

You might sleep in a kennel or veterinary clinic with same arrangement. There's a lot of mosquitos. Before you think to go there, look what deceases can be transmitted from ill dogs to people. One of most dangerous is dirofilaria, or heartworm via mosquitos. Dogs on the bed and sun beds, no comments.  

Do not trust! All that awful behavior of owner continue for many years.  They lie, hide and dodge.  For me they didn't told truth about number of dogs, origin and problems with dogs even though I asked directly.

The place is quiet and secluded nestled amongst a beautiful setting of trees and plants. Food at the restaurant is reasonably priced and top notch. Rooms were clean with fresh towels everyday. Our place had a kitchenette with the basics to get by for breakfast and simple meals. Pool was nice and refreshing after a long day in the sun. Wifi was a touch spotty but my kids were able to watch YouTube shows without too much buffering. Only downfalls were the beds were not too comfortable, a/c was set at 17c but you couldn’t tell it was on. The ceiling fans worked great to keep you comfortable enough. Do plenty of research and you will be able to get by no problem. The area was safe and the complex was too. We never used our safe and had left money and computers behind with no issues and didn’t use the safe. We used a taxi the whole time and truthfully if you are not great at dealing with crazy drivers you will not want to drive. The motorcycles/mopeds are like mosquitos swarming around you as you drive. It’s a short walk to everything you could need we had no issues with being taken advantage of as tourists. The mosquitos were not always an issue but they are there and some days are worse than others. Robbie who does the surfing down at Encuentro was a super friendly guy and the vibe at that beach was super chill and had a place to get good eats and cold presidentes. Too many good places nearby to eat at in town some more reasonable then others but nothing was too expensive enjoy your trip there it is easy to do! Oh and there’s plenty of dogs around😁

Beautiful place with different rooms for every budget. Great restraunt with friendly staff. Very relaxing vibe and a great atmosphere. Walking distance to the beach and Cabarete's restaurants and shops.

New management - loved it!

The restaurant Aly's Surfcamp is very well known in Cabarete for its great food and beautiful location. At night Aly's lights up with colorful florescent lights and the sounds of frogs croaking in the swamp. During the day kids love to explore in the lake and look for fish and turtles. Great place to watch the sunset. Incredible food and beautiful scenery.

Love this place every time i go! Unique atmosphere, food is always delicious and i especially love the laod back relaxed delivery... so if your not rushed... this is a fantastic place to go, relax ans enjoy!
