Very friendly staff in this charming old style Spanish building. Plenty of bathrooms all with showers for everyone to use without waiting. Nice living room and other spaces outside private room. The room itself is clean, beds are solid and plenty of blankets.

One area for improvement is the availability of staff at the reception. Sometimes there is only one member who also makes breakfast at the other end of the building. This can lead to queues at the entrance as the gate is locked for safety. Add a reception bell!!

Nostalgia and welcoming

Very rude staff, you are treated like an unwanted guest in their house and ordered around. Staff are shouting all morning, impossible to relax.
They lock the door at random times and no bell so you just have to wait and they act like they are doing you a favour.

Staff ruins the place and run down

If you’re into sleazy filth and bacterial infections or worse I recommend this hostage hostal to you. I’m gagging as I write this. The stink pierces your nose and causes dizziness. Paper thin walls that allow you to hear every sound in the bathroom next door. Each plop, grunt and flush makes for an interesting biological symphony throughout the night. Got locked in with no employee in sight. We fled this hostal in search of a safe and clean haven. Doused myself in rubbing alcohol and wire brush scrub after leaving. An injury occurred on the nasty gates on the way out. I was afraid my hand may need to be amputated due to bacterial infection afterwards. Run! 

Vomitous Stench and caked on dirt. 

This place was disgusting!  Filthy, unsanitary, may cause need for additional vaccinations.  This hostel needs to be quarantined!  Ick!

The walls were paper thin, allowing you to hear EVERYTHING from adjoining rooms and bathroom.  Wifi was crap.  Pillows were basically smelly pancakes that hasn’t been washed in a long time.  They lock you in, and we had to yell and search for someone to unlock the door to let us out.  Friend injured hand on exterior gates, which were disgusting.  

They wouldn’t refund the money we paid for unused nights, but that was a small price to pay to escape that hell hole.

Sh!thole - it’s like the Coronavirus of Hostels

We stayed here for one night on our way from Ecuador to Peru. We were getting the night bus from Cuenca to Mancora and needed somewhere to overnight beforehand. 

The hostel itself is well placed in the old part of town. It’s perfectly safe - or at least we got that vibe - around the hostel and there are plenty of places to eat and drink. The staff were friendly and our room was massive - probably the biggest room we’ve had on our travels in Ecuador to date. It was a double bed room and was clean and comfy. The shared bathrooms were fine - clean and showers had good hot water. 

The kitchen is basic but clean enough. The WiFi was very good and allowed us to plan a lot of our onward trip without issues. Likewise the communal areas were comfy. The staff also let us store our gear at the hostel and use the WiFi/amenities late into the next evening before our bus, which was very handy. 

Overall this sounds like a 5/5 review so far but we had one major issue which meant that we’d think twice about staying here again. The quiet hours in the hostel start at 11.30pm. This is the latest we’ve ever seen. When you add this to the fact that the design of the hostel is such that all the rooms are accessed via a raised walkway which is open down to the ground floor (where everyone comes and goes at all times of the night), you end up with one very, very noisy echo chamber. 

We could hear music blaring from downstairs until gone 11pm, and then at 4am we got woken up by 3 girls having a loud conversation downstairs (they were just arriving or leaving - but made an absolute racket laughing and joking). The noise echoes throughout the whole place and it’s no exaggeration to say that you will need earplugs to sleep here if you have the same experience as us. 

Finally, at 7am the next morning the cleaner decided to wax the floor outside our room. It wasn’t the noise that got us but the near fumigation of our room from the chemicals that she was using. They honestly smelt like petrol and it was so bad we had to leave our room. So overall we didn’t have the most tranquil of nights!

I’m sure you could stay here and have a 5/5 time and maybe we just got unlucky with some inconsiderate other guests, but earlier quiet hours and some simple soundproofing would have made this an excellent hostel. 

Plenty of good points but also some bad

Under NO circumstances should ANYONE EVER stay at Mochilier's Hostel in Cuenca, Ecuador for three reasons: (1) You will NEVER get to use the tiny, filthy kitchen because the volunteer "staff" is ALWAYS using all four stove burners and all available counter space cooking for themselves. And they take up 75% of the shelf space in the under-sized refrigerator. (2) The electrical wiring is old and fault. I removed my surge suppressor from a socket one evening, which generated a spark. The next morning, I discovered that it was friend and didn't work anymore. I shopped around for the lowest price to replace it ($4) but when I asked the co-owner sisters to pay for it since their wiring damaged my personal property, not only did she REFUSE, she actually had the brass to accuse my strip of damaging their electrical wiring! Which is, of course, impossible. They threatened to charge me for their damage, tried to photograph me, and then tried to charge me for two nights that I did not stay there. Not only do they not understand the basics of electricity, they are stupid, hostile, and hateful.
 
(3) It is against the law to use surveillance cameras without prominently posting that people are being captured on video, but they have surveillance cameras hidden all over the hostel without ANY signs informing guests. Their failure to post this information violates the law, which makes them criminals.

If you value your property and privacy, AVOID THIS HOSTEL!!!

Never, Ever Stay at Mochilier's Hostel

this is a very central location, convenient for walking to anywhere in the centre. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. The shared area is a good place to relax, with TV, sofa and cushions. The staff and volunteers were very welcoming and gave good tips on where to go in cuenca.

I booked this hostel room online and even though I asked a quiet room they gave me the one next to the lobby which there was loud music, tv and people messing around loudly until like 8.30pm. The walls are very thins as I had to listen the couple having sex and groaning from midnight till 2am. Torture! I liked the staff, they were friendly and tried their best to speak English. The shower was cold when I arrived but, it seemed like it was fixed and I had some hot water the next morning. I, also, paid $15 for my laundry service and I think that's way too pricy. The place was clean and the bunk bed was comfy.  The wifi connection was shockingly bad, it kept getting disconnected all the time.

It could be better

Firstly, Cuenca is a beautiful city with lovely people. You have to visit! And Mochiliers was a great place to stay. Comfortable beds, bathrooms were fine, maybe could be a little cleaner and maybe the hostel is a little small but the best thing about this place is the staff who are really friendly, helpful and accomodating!

We arrived at 10 pm and the room was not ready before midnight. Not even one "sorry".
Cold shower.
The room is way too small for 4 people. No space, no light.
No towell.
All the bars/clubs close at 2 in Cuenca and we didn't have the right to come back at this hostel to talk.
I do not recommend this place.
