HORRIBLE experience, the owner tries to be pleasant but pure interest... he asked us for loan money (40$) for an emergency that he never returned to us and dismissed, even hiding so as not to give his face. Besides, at night he played loud music and shouts were heard until late afternoon. And the water of the dos ÚNICAS duchas throughout the hostel is cold, there is no hot water. No vayan, there are much better places in Vilcabamba to stay, and where you can not steal.

The worst part of the experience is that the beds have fleas. Ivan enters any room without first calling and the atmosphere with his Igor makes the stay very uncomfortable. It is certainly the worst hostel we have ever known in all of South America.

I would never come back.

It was a very pleasant stay in this charming, clean, and very honest hostel. The boss and his friends were very hospitable and very friendly. They made us feel at home for a week. We have a great memory of it, and we recommend this place that meets all the expectations you can have of a hostel.

Very pleasant stay.

We spent 3 very pleasant nights in this warm and atypical place, which has a very good quality/price ratio for a family room (1 bed 2 places, 1 bed 1 square and a half). Thank you to Ivan the owner for welcoming us and sharing his knowledge and love of his country as very few have done so far.

It's a great stay.

La casa de Matilda was my best experience in Ecuador. I was planning to stay one night and I stayed one week. I found there everything I was looking for: a nice place, amazing people, (Ivan the owner is a lovely person, he will make you comfortable and always willing to share with you and improve your stay), stunning view, good kitchen, very good wifi (getting good connexion was never easy for me in ecuador), comfortable bed, clean, etc.
The decoration is lovely, you can notice that this place was made with love.
The thing about this place is that you feel like at home.
If you are looking for authenticity and sharing with local and backpackers that is the place to be !
(And if you like cats and dogs then you’re in heaven)

Authentic, relaxing and good people

I booked on Facebook, got a response within minutes. The taxi dropped me off at the gate downstairs. Since it was already evening and dark, I wasn't sure if I was in the right place. A sign would be helpful. Then I walked through the gate, a small dungeon-like path leading to the hostel. It's somewhat remote and so quiet. Breakfast is available. The view is great. There aren't many rooms, so there aren't many guests. My bed in the four-bedroom was very good. You should like cats and dogs when you're down here. All in all, I'd like to continue to La Casa de Matilda. A trip to Podocarpus National Park (also in the bus) is very worthwhile. I've got a $1 ticket to the Loja Plaza Vegetarian Restaurant near Urmy Plaza.

Quietly

Don’t stay here. It was the worst night of our trip. The bed was terrible, the room was not clean and people were partying loudly until 7am. No sound protection whatsoever. Shame, as it is a beautiful spot.

Not recommended

I really enjoyed my stay at Casa de Matilda! Mariana and Ivan a so nice and the hostel is very cosy (there is only six beds in total) with a beautiful view. One night we even had a bum fire in the garden. Thank you so much, I'll come back!

Very relaxing place!

This hostel is a great place to stay. The hosts are amazingly kind and helpful. The location is great, about 10 minutes walking distance from the main plaza, quiet, and with a beautiful view on the valley. The accommodation is basic, but the rooms are cozy, and you have access to a fully equipped kitchen. The breakfast at an additional cost of $3 is great and you can choose among american, continental, vegetarian, and Matilda. The Matilda breakfast is a large omelet with cheese and vegetables - incredibly delicious! They also sell home made Alfajores and the Coffee is locally produced and roasted directly in the kitchen. There are a couple of good hikes that start close to the hostel including a hike to Mondango Hill and the Palto Waterfall.
