A Welcome Break Hostal

This is a family run hostel in the center of Tena.  Juan Carlos is the friendly, helpful owner.  Rooms are clean, beds are comfortable and the location is great.  There are rooms with private bathrooms and others with shared bathrooms, all of which are clean.  There is a nice garden and hammocks, free wifi, and a kitchen that you can use.  Good value.

I constantly travel to the Tena because I am doing my doctoral thesis on sustainable tourism in this area. I also have a travel agency abroad. I am always looking for comfortable, safe and sustainable accommodation. This is not possible in the Tena. Over time, I have been bad at the hotels I have been to in the Tena, expensive hotels and with poor customer service. Everything was disappointing until I found Welcome Break, an accommodation that does not have a 5-star service and is more focused on backpackers, but that is very safe and above all the kindness of its owner and service staff makes it unique.

Simple hostel at $8 per person.The outdoor bathroom is very clean and hot water comes immediately.There is a small kitchen available.A few hammocks downstairs, they are nice.There may be a bit of noise because the road passes in front.

A central and budget hostel in Tena, 'the door to the Amazon'. Juan the owner is extremely nice ans helpful.

It was a great option for us to stay (cheap and clean, practical kitchen) while focusing on the activities we wanted to do in the area (Amazoonico, Ruta Ancestral del Chocolate) but the place doesn't have a lot of ambiance - there were little interactions between the guest and no real 'common area'.

Central and budget hostel in Tena

When we arrived, we were just greeted by a very unfriendly maid. No welcome, no check-in, nothing... We showed her our reservation and she made it clear that the room was occupied. Instead of a room with a French bed with balcony we found ourselves in a room without a balcony with two single beds and a bunk bed again. No apology, no explanation, nothing..... The reception was not occupied all day. About the fact that there is no water at the time, we were informed by other guests.... Departure:..... no one there! The maid then took us away without a bill or booking of $25.00 (although we told her that this room alone would cost only $1900 to book today). This hostel is a good review, this room has been completely unoccupied. No one else will come to help us with cleaning rooms, restaurants, etc.

Never Again - The Most Unfriendly Accommodation in All of Ecuador

I first found this spot back in 2005 and loved how welcoming, clean, responsible and laid back they were. 12 years later, the staff seemed different but they continue to offer stellar service at a great price. Their rooms and facilities are far from luxury but are kept in tip-top shape and all that you need.

Similar to my past visit, I was in Tena for rafting, and the folks at Welcome Break helped us troubleshoot our last minute scramble to find a rafting trip at the last minute after our original booking fell through. They let us use their personal mobile phones to make and receive calls despite the many interruptions it caused to their night; provided helpful info about the town; and allowed us to store gear with them beyond our stay.

We had no air conditioning but their circulation fans work great to cool the rooms. And the shared bathrooms were always fresh and clean.  WiFi is a bit slow, but that seemed to be the case everywhere we went in the country. 

Absolutely a place I recommend for your stay in Tena. 


Great people, perfect budget hotel 

The staff is very friendly and helps and guides you in which activities and places you can see.It is located in a quiet street and close to the suspension bridge that leaves you on the banks of the river Tena, where there is a very pleasant walk.The mattress is comfortable and rests.The city of Tena is not dangerous.

A quiet and pleasant place to rest.

I stayed two nights in this hostel with my partner. Everything is very clean and beautiful. The room is nice. The kitchen. And the bathrooms are very clean. The big problem is that it is in a very noisy street and at 6 am you wake up to the noise of cars. You hear so much noise because the doors have a big hole below so you can hear everything. The common area is right in front of you so you can hear the screams, laughter, and everything else that is there. Both at night and early in the morning. So the rest in this hostel is a little reduced.

Service of 10 but impossible to rest.

The place is very pleasant and has a good location.It is close to the river but on a street not very busy, so the atmosphere is very quiet.The rooms are economical and clean and the owner is very attentive.

We discover this hostal and we past 3 nights here. The room and the bathroom was clean, we slept well. We enjoy the hamac place and to use the kitchen.
Very closed to the center and not so far from the bus terminal (easy to go by feet with a heavy bag).
