I'm only giving this place 2 stars cause the owner was really great and welcoming, possibly the one and only positive things of the hostel. My girlfriend, my friend and I stayed a week in mid-january in the triple room with private bathroom. Well, the first day there was no hot water and although we told one of the manager about before leaving, this was not fixed until late evening when we came back to the room (although they had keys and such). The two managers working there are very unsociable, they don't seem to care whether there are guests or not and do very little effort around the place. The shared kitchen (for which you have to pay a fee every time you want to use it) is simply the most terrible kitchen we've ever seen. Dust, literally just a couple of very old pans left there and leftover of food in the cabinets... after the second day cooking we gave up and chose to eat out. Wi-fi did not reach the room or the common area outside and was very weak (nearly inexistent) even when sitting next to it. The hostel is very central and close to most of the bus-lines and in a very safe area.

Great Owner but Terrible Hostel

Great location and very safe section. The owner is very nice and will help you around El Salvador.They are making the place better by construction now too.the nightlife close by is safe and reasonably priced. Go to Mojitos and listen to reggaeton.

Great little hostel

We spent two nights here before heading to the coast, which was more than enough. 
We arrived about 9pm from the airport in a taxi, tired and stressed because our luggage had not arrived. 
The lady on reception was pleasant enough but didn't speak any English and we don't speak Spanish so it was really challenging to to explain the situation with our lost luggage! 
Lena (who apparently runs the place, and is connected to the travel scene- also speaks English)was away at the time we were there which was a bit unfortunate although we did speak with her on the phone and she gave us some pointers of things to do on the city. 

The strangest thing about the place was the fact that NOBODY else was there. At all!! So the two of us were sort of rattling about the empty guest house wondering if we had entered some weird parallel universe! 

It's is very worn and in need of a good facelift, the courtyard is pretty and well looked after but generally it's a crumbling old place. The vibe is that it was once a great place to be. 

Our shower came with instructions on how to avoid electrocution during use....pretty sketchy and not really acceptable to be honest. And the door on our room didn't work. 

We found a great pupuseria nearby for cheap breakfast. And a friendly bar down the road for drinks. 
Although the neighbourhood is safe during the day, definitely take a taxi after dark. 

In need of a major facelift!

Ximena's is in a safe area of town with leafy streets, quaint houses and friendly people. The rooms are basic but have A/C, a fan and hot water. There are dorms and private rooms. The best part of the experience was the owner, Lena. She has lived in San Salvador a long time and knows everything about the city and day trips. She is extremely helpful and speaks English. She can also help you set up tour guides; the guy she found for me was charming, knowledgeable, fun and also spoke English. In a city that can quickly become overwhelming, Lena is an exceptional resource. Highly recommended for backpackers and budget travelers.

Safe, clean, friendly helpful staff

I hesitate to give the hostel such a low rating because the owner is seriously awesome. She is knowledgeable and passionate about the country and I was very happy I followed her suggestions for places to visit, transport to take, etc. It's just really unfortunate that the place is in such poor, decrepit condition (it was generally clean but needs a serious renovation). The mattress in my single room was horrible and there was what looked like mold near the bathroom. It felt depressing to be there. The worker at the front desk was inconsistent: sometimes very helpful, sometimes impossible to tear away from her phone. I really hope the place gets an upgrade because Lena is such a fantastic resource for the travelers to this city.
