This was a fantastic hotel. We were travelling as a group on a coach trip, myself and my mother so had a twin room. The room was right at the back, but we had 4 windows and a side view of the hill, very quiet and lovely.

Upon arrival from the ferry we were ushered into the dining room for our first meal. Well it was beautiful. In fact every 3 course meal we had was fabulous. The food prepared looked appealing and tasted great. Such a choice to be selected in the morning for that evening. 

I should not have read the reviews and just gone on the experience itself. Yes its and old Edwardian building, and maintenance I would imagine is expensive. The beds were very comfortable and a good nights sleep was had.

The view out to the bay from the lounge was lovely watching the horse drawn trams trot by.

I have to give a shout out to the restaurant team. The waiting staff, we young locals, they were professional, efficient and did an amazing job, you always get some grumpy grouches and they dealt with them really well and whatever their future chosen career is working here will stand them in good stead.

Don’t believe the reviews.

The hotel is within easy walking distance of the Manx Electric Railway but a long way from the town centre. 
 There is however a frequent bus service.
Our room was on the small side but had everything you would want and was attractively decorated.  No sea view as is the case with most of these Victorian seafront hotels as they have only limited frontage; some rooms have side sea view.  The shower had limited pressure (we were on the 5th floor) but was very hot.  There was one day when the hotel was cold and in immediate response to complaints the heating was taken off the timer and switched to 24 hours.  Our room was serviced daily.
The food in the restaurant was invariably excellent.  Evening meals are ordered at breakfast which reduces waste and improves quality.  It also makes service quicker.
All staff were friendly and professional - they clearly wanted everyone to have a good time.  Reception is not always manned but inquiries can usually be dealt with in the bar next door.
This hotel would be a struggle for anyone disabled.  There are no ground floor rooms and the single lift stops between floors so that you have to go up or down a few stairs to get to your room, also negotiating 2 heavy fire doors.
We would be happy to use the Hydro again.

We enjoyed our 5 days at the Hydro.  

Excellent hotel clean and tidy hotel good food nice hot plates and good amount of food friendly staff I found the shower a bit small for me to get into but I would certainly consider coming again possibly early in the year probably a coach holiday

Gardiners coach holiday

I was  very concerned after reading recent  reviews about the hotel but was  very pleasantly  surprised. Stayed there for 6 nights as part of  a Just Go coach holiday. Our bedroom, which was a good size had a seaview,  It was clean and  fresh towels were left every day. Generous supplies of teas and coffees in the room. The food at dinner was very enjoyable with a vegetarian option always available. no tired salad or tinned fruit everything fresh and at its best. 
All the staff were very pleasant and helpful, especially in the dining room. 
It was a comfortable walk into the town centre all level access, there were frequent buses if preferred.

Pleasantly surprised

Having stayed at The Hydro hotel for 4 nights on a coach trip, I must speak as I find, as normal on coach holidays they usually use 3 ⭐️ hotels so my expectations are never really high as long as room & bed are clean which was the case here,  but also the food was excellent & most of the staff pleasant & helpful.
 My room was on the 5th floor & after alighting from the lift there was I think 6 stairs to walk up to reach the room. The carpet in the passage ways wasn’t the best but that was insignificant. 
Bar prices were reasonable I was paying £3.60 for a drink & along the road another hotel wanted £7.00 for same drink. 
Hotel is on the promenade with excellent views, there is seating outside the main door but unless you smoked it probably isn’t a place you would want to sit. 
Overall I had a lovely stay

Hydro hotel I.O.M

Hotel was very dated and not suitable for disabilities as there are plenty of stairs throughout. 
Food and staff were excellent! There was a wide variety of food and the staff provided a nice and friendly service and nothing was too much trouble.

Not suitable for disabilities

Great location for mini railway and walking to beach and Douglas. Clean room with view of Beach and the sea, near fury and chips and local shops and bars, quite expensive as it was TT weekend but was there for a Darkness gig so was to be expected.

Good location for the Mini Railway

Just returned from a week's stay here as part of a Just Go holiday. Room was clean, comfortable with en suite bathroom. An older building, as mentioned in other reviews and access could be difficult for those with limited mobility - the steps up to the front entrance are numerous and quite steep; the lifts are effectively between floors, where to access you have to either walk down or up a flight of stairs to or from your room.

The staff are wonderful and are probably the making of this hotel; we had excellent service throughout and were particularly looked after by Alex. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was varied and generally very good and well managed, despite catering for two coach parties. Breakfast is a buffet and you pre-order your evening meal from a menu provided at breakfast. Snacks are available at lunchtimes. 

The hotel is a 20-minute walk from the town centre and several buses pass by, along with the horse drawn tram. The electric railway is a five-minute walk in the opposite direction.

Would happily stay again, should we return to the Isle of Man

Holiday Stay

We stayed at The Hydro for one week on a brilliantly organised Alpha Travel Tour. Our driver Derek was the ultimate professional.  The hotel was on the seafront with fabulous views of the bay from our bedroom window it has beautiful original Victorian features which inevitably means a few cracks and crumbly walls but to me that’s it’s charm. We were able to watch the dolphins very close to the shore from our bedroom window. For the price we paid we didn’t expect The Savoy standards. What we got was a very comfortable bed and a bathroom with a bath and shower and plenty of hot water. The room decor was a little tired but it was clean with room service everyday. . The food was really nice fresh ingredients cooked from scratch with lots of choice at breakfast and our evening meal. The jewels in the Hydro’s crown are the staff everyone was so helpful and friendly they made our stay a pleasure.
