During our tour with friends through the Baltic states we stayed for one night at the Palmse Manor guesthouse. It was the only hotel of our tour that was really diappointing. This was supposed to be a 3 star hotel (local category), it did definitely not live up to that standard:
There were no elevators, we had to carry our luggage up two floors. The room had no safe. The water in the bathroom had a smell of hydogen sulfide (especially noticeable when brushing your teeth). The bar was closed, we were offered a table in the (otherwise empty) restaurant instead. Worst of all was the attitude of the personnel, very unfriendly both at check-in and check-out (different persons).
The only reason for rating at 2 instead of 1: The surroundings of the guesthouse are very nice.

We didn't feel welcome

Palmse Manor is still on my mind.  I love the rich historical architecture, artifacts and cultural vibe of this manor house.  The Estonians know how to give a complete picture of what it would be like to live in a manor home.  Each room is beautifully restored and fully furnished from days gone by.  The artifacts in the kitchen were fascinating, as was the music box in the parlor.  There is a nice walking path about the lake, rides in a horse drawn carriage (large and mini), plus wine tasting and food sampling.  My teenager was fascinated.  What a magical place to visit!

A Highlight in the Estonian Countryside

My husband and I had a suite on the first floor of the guest house.  Very interesting lay out - two rooms, large bedroom with a sitting area with a table.  There is a separate shower room from the toilet.  That is nice when there are two people staying there.  The bathroom floors were heated.  Very nice!  

The bed was very comfortable with 2 pillows for each person and king sized.  They also supplied hair conditioner - so if you have long hair it's useful.

The grounds were beautiful.  There are hiking trails, a distillery (with tasting room), a wine cellar (with tasting), the manor house, a garden, a pub and gardens. There is also a beautiful gazebo overlooking a lake.  

Breakfast in the pub was good.  Good variety, eggs, ham, breads, tea, coffee and juices.

Beautiful location

Amazing setting and beautiful gardens. The hotel is nice with Good rooms with en suite and a decent restaurant.
It's an excellent place from which to explore the Lahemaa national park. Hire a bike and explore! There are some beautiful beaches in the north, off road mountain biking trails and decent Tarmac roads to ride on.

Beautiful setting

The Palmse Manor seemed to be closed when we arrived there.  The bar was not opened during the two days we were there, and the girl running the place was not particularly warm and friendly.  The rooms are basic, but clean and tidy.  The surroundings put all of this into perspective however.  Absolutely beautiful grounds, including orchards, woodlands, lawns and large ponds.  Really very relaxing and set in a wonderful areas of northern Estonia.

Beautiful Setting

We stayed in a suite at the Guest House in August 2012, and it was in excellent condition.  There was a large bed in the bedroom, and the sofa becomes a bed if you need it for a child staying in the suite.  The additional room is set up for dining, but there is no kitchen or take away options, so the space could be better used for a sitting room.

Management could do better with some of the details, such as supplying the suite with adequate towels upon check in, providing bar soap for the bathroom and other typical touches of a hotel, even though this is more of a B&B experience.

The breakfast included is served at a beautiful building overlooking the pond and is available from 9am to 10am.  The food available was not consistent during our stay, since inventory of items was low, and they seemed to serve items, such as rolls, until they ran out of inventory.  This was concerning to me, but this was an included breakfast and I guess they can provide what they have available.

We had an unusual experience during our stay, a fire alarm that seemed to be caused by a guest smoking in the building.  It took some time for the owner to get the loud alarm turned off, since there was no one present who could look after this event.  We stayed in our car until order was restored to the B&B.
