We had an amazing time at Tankavaara in December 2023. Firstly the area in winter is absolutely stunning. Secondly the staff were fantastic in the bar area and guides and driver. Shout out to both Kimmos!
We chose to stay in the Sompiotalo Deluxe apartment which was a 10 minute (very enjoyable) walk from the reception. It is a great apartment. In terms of activities we did the northern lights snowmobile tour with Tankavaara (Kimmo 2) which was AMAZING. We also did the Lappish Dinner meal in the traditional Kota and indoor winter gold panning with Kimmo 2. The good museum is also surprisingly really good. We booked husky and reindeer safaris ourselves from Tankavaara recommendations. Absolutely fantastic time.

We Struck Gold

We stayed at the Tankavaara gold village camps cabins in a four person cabin. The cabin was nice in itself. But on the last night of our stay I woke up to a mouse scratching my arm. Very unpleasant. We decided to leave the cabin in the middle of the night and continue driving southwards towards Rovaniemi. Would not recommend this place.

The place is lovely, in a reconstructed gold village with a gold museum, in the National park of Tankavaara. The rooms, apart from wooden cottages in the wood, are in two ugly buildings that indeed disagree with the general idea. My room was small and very basic, beds very uncomfortable, kind of soft sofas with a very thin mattress;  the bathroom new and comfortable. Breakfast is quite poor. Lunch and dinner are average. The nicest one was the fire dinner in a small hut with Sami music and a very nice girl of the staff. The activities are well organized. I did snowshoeing in the park with the same nice girl and reindeer sledding by night (no aurora unluckily). The staff is kind and helpful. Wi-Fi works very well also in rooms.

Lovely place with some flaws

Beautiful hiking trails nearby and best place to stay in Tankavara.
Value for the money and comfortable stay. Staff was really helpful and they provide all the hiking trail maps and easy to rent equipments.

Breathtaking view within few meters

I had visited the place before, this year I spent 3 nights in a cabin of the Gold village (before and after a multiday hike in the area). The cabins are cozy and all gold digger style and just beautiful. Toilet, shower and kitchen are in a separate common building. Depending on which cabin you get, that building will be more or less close. Cabins have nice wooden bunk beds, bed linen, a table, chairs, a fireplace/chimney, chopped wood some shelves. 
Check-in is in the nearby restaurant, which is also a cozy place with good food and very friendly staff. 
There are several old buildings and some tiny shops in the Gold Village, you also have the possibility to learn gold panning. The international gold museum is also within walking distance.
There's just no supermarkt in the area (the closest grocery store is in Vuotso).
Free wifi works close to the reception/restaurant only, not in the cabins etc.

Touristic, but stylish place to stay in Tankavaara

I came here for a meditation retreat and felt in love with the place, the staff and the environment 
This is a magical place with amazing trails to explore the beautiful nature and super nice food 
I will definitely come back with the family go this dreamed land

Intersting place. You can try gold panning here. Has a long history and different kind a place than you see anywhere else. Went to the restaurant for a burger. It was made out of reindeer! They also had their own beer. It's next to national park so if you stay here you can easily go for hiking there.

Nice food!

This is at 31 Tankavaaranite close to the Gold Prospector Museum at 11 Tankavaarantie. This  has accomodation in authentic wilderness  cabins that reflect the simple living of the gold prospectors,  and more modern apartments. There is also a Old Gold Prospector restaurant.

This was basically a lunch stop while on the road but turned out to be quite interesting.  Gold was actually discovered here in the 1930s by the Sami (Laplanders) so the site is set up like an old gold mining village with very rustic buildings.  We got to try reindeer meat for the first time at their restaurant, we panned for gold, and visited their museum.  The history of Finnish gold was well covered along with information about gold in over 20 other countries. There is also a mineral and stone collection. Something different to enjoy!

Throwback In Time

The cabins and area is very nice and cozy, theyre cute and the fireplace is a huge bonus. The aesthetic is very rustic and pleasant. The sauna was incredible, shared bathrooms and showers were clean enough. It is an excellent place to view the northern lights and to access the nearby Saariselkä area. The staff is incredibly friendly. Reindeer feeding was super fun and cute.

The bar area could use some music and the food was, well, not amazing, especiallu considering the proice range. Also, the bar is only open until 9pm even though they advertise being open until 2am, which was a bit of a buzzkill, but not that big of a deal.
