Only the Pyrennees themselves could rival the grandeur of our beautiful, spacious room at this chateau, opening through tall, elegant shutters onto a little balcony - and those very mountains.
From our balcony we could watch the cable cars and chair lifts making their sedate way up the slopes in their Summer green.
Our lovely host welcomed us with some concern as we arrived a little later than expected, diverted as we had been en route by the heights of Col de Pailhieres.
From our windows also we could look down onto the view of the swimming pool, which also looked out onto the mountains and down onto Ax les Thermes itself with its alluring market place and its spa baths. 
The chateau itself is all faded grandeur and elegance. We ate in the evenings on the broad terrace, having made out own meals in the well-equipped kitchen. We chatted to the charming owners who had had the place in their family for a long time.
The breakfasts were very generous - lovely range of Viennoiserie, good coffee, a fresh orange juice machine and a big choice of other things to eat. all served in the elegant dining room among the other friendly guests. We met a young Dutch cyclist who as living and working in Barcelona. He said it was a great place for a keen cyclist to pit themselves against the famous Pyrennean climbs. 
The room was not only comfortable but beautifully decorated. The shower was great too - powerful, responsive and easy to use. The bed itself was large and wonderfully comfortable.
We had a wonderful time. Thank-you!

Warm welcome in grand and beautiful surroundings

Les Cascatelles is a mansion sitting high on the mountain road overlooking the village. It has been in the family for many years and the current owners have restored it to much of its former glory. If our room had been any larger my wife and I would have needed to communicate by telephone. Breakfast featured the best croissants I have had in France, period, full stop. An easy ride into town if you don't mind the curves. A pony and some goats add to the bucolic ambience.

We are Australian and have traveled many places. Our stay at Les Cascalelles was one of pleasure. The room was comfortable, the facilities were good and the owners were wonderful.

Set on the high side of a valley it over looks the town making for a very pleasant outlook especially at night. The hotel has old world charm but very clean and nothing seems to be in disrepair.

Yvan and Corrina are lovely and interact with guests warmly. They are helpful and soooo French.

Hotel situated on mountainside, short drive from centre.  Superb views of Ax and surrounding mountains from dining room and bedroom.  Yvan and Corinne very welcoming and helpful.  The chateau is charming and characterful but is old and the exterior is in need of some refurbishment.  However the room was very clean, warm, quiet and comfortable and we had all that we needed. Breakfast was fine and indeed included the best croissants we have eaten since coming to France!  The kitchen is available for cooking your dinner in the evening if you wish and there is a comfortable lounge area.  Only drawback for us (not being used to driving in mountainous areas) was the very tight bend into hotel driveway - however probably not a problem for others.  Interesting stay and good value!

Interesting and comfortable stay

Beautiful old house with great views. The hosts are really welcoming and friendly and made us feel at home.  We could even use a kitchen to make food.  Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The huge family room is  excellent value for money!

On May 13th 2016 I reserved for September 12th, by telephone and confirmed by email, room 3.
I explained to the lady that my wife is handicapped, reason why I asked for a room on the ground floor (not possible) or the first (available) and an accessible shower.
The reservation was confirmed by les Castelles per email on May 14th.
On August 20th I received a short email that our room 3 was given to somebody else "who was not able to get into the bathtub".
When I called the proprietor to inquire and to express my dissatisfaction he became extremely rude and ill-mannered: shouting, not willing to listen or even give me the opportunity to reply to his insolence.
Moreover he told me that "as I stayed only for one night I had to accept that he gave our room to somebody who stayed longer than that".
The proprietor went even so far as cancelling my reservation altogether!
I live in France - much to my pleasure - for 25 years and I never encountered something like this behaviour.
Luckily this will prove to be a "blessing in disguise" as I could make a reservation in the Chateau Benac near Foix.
Here I was received in the proper, warm and courteous way you may expect.
So my advice is : avoid les Castarelles and choose for Chateau Benac!
