Hotel Bertrand is a budget friendly place to put your head down with great staff, thats why it gets 5 stars for me. You get what you pay for and for us it was worth it. The food was great. The rooms dated but spacious and teh beds comfy.  A fixed menu at 20 Euro we had plenty to eat - our breakfast was included in the price too - simple but good enough. 

The rooms are what they are for the money - the staff were so accomodating I would definetely go back if passing and needed somewhere to stay.

Don't go out of your way to stay here, but if you are in Bar le Duc, it's certainly do-able.

Great Stay with great hosts.

My wife and I stayed in this Hotel last weekend with a couple of friends.  We were not sure what to expect when we arrived but our rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable and the rooms were a good size.  It looks as if every other room has been taken out and split down the middle to form the ensuite facilities for the rooms either side.  All the sanitary equipment was new and the shower worked well. Breakfast was good and the staff were very attentive even though they struggled to speak English.  Car parking was secure and the gate closed at 11.00 pm sharp.  The second night we were back in the hotel after midnight and found no trouble in parking in the road. At £50 a night it was very reasonable and given the lack of hotels in Bar le Duc I would happily stay there again.

A weekend break visiting Rotarian friends

Other reviewers have warned travellers that Hotel Bertrand doesn't look much from the outside, and that's certainly true, but I was quite happy staying here. It offers superb value for money, a genuine welcome from the owners, a decent restaurant, a pleasant terrace bar - and bluntly, simply finding a hotel in Bar le Duc (where there are very few accommodation choices) was a relief. I stayed in one of the old rooms, above the public areas: pretty basic, with one of the smallest bathrooms I have ever seen (and a loo down the corridor), but clean and satisfactory. They are doing some renovations this summer, so perhaps these older rooms will be done up. The rate for dinner, bed and breakfast was the cheapest I found throughout France!

Decent overnight stop in a town with few hotels

On first glance this Place  seemed like a throw-back to the 1960's. But on closer observation, there was new fresh paint and wall paper, updated bathroom. The room was spacious even if the linoleum floor was a bit off-putting. The furniture was from your grandmother' time and the mattress needed to be replaced 10 years ago! However, The welcome was extremely warm. And for two older cyclists arriving on a very wet Sunday with the restaurant closed, the weekend manager went out of her way to fix a simple meal. Don't go out of your way to stay here, but if you are in Bar le Duc, it's certainly do-able for one night.

Unassuming Simple Hôtel

Good option to spend a couple of days in this area. The location is pretty good, close to the train station (high speed trains). Hotel has few spots to park your car but the surrounding streets are full of spaces to do it (not a big deal).
Staff, cleaners and waiters are very kind and professionals.
Good food and variety in the restaurant (open also a few more hours if you ask them).

I spent 3 months working in this area and I can guaranteed that this is Bar-le-Duc's best hotel.

Kind stuff, comfortable beds for a couple of days

We booked a triple room which was across the road from the main hotel. It looked very very dated (circa 1990s) but sufficed as only one night.  

It was on the street and noisy with the motorbikes riding around that area but they all seemed to stop after 12ish. 

After one night though my baby woke up with bites all the way up one arm that looked suspiciously like bed bug bites and even though we booked a triple room, paying an additional premium to a double, they then charged us an extra 11 Euros for the third person in the room which was a 2 year old!

Not impressed!

Nothing special felt ripped off

My first impression was that the place was filthy, the owner was wearing a polo shirt covered in dribbles and food. Very off putting and made my stomach churn, we left as soon as we could. 
They couldn’t speak any English and tried to use translation on their mobile.
