When I arrived at the indicated address, there was no sign to indicate there was a hotel at that location. I knocked on the door and no one answered. A passing French couple used their phone to try to call the hotel. There was no answer. I thought I must have the wrong address so spent an hour going around the neighborhood in the August heat but never found another place. I think I found the hotel, but there was no one there to let me in or even answer the phone (which the managers later denied).

So I found another hotel. Once I got to my room, I immediately cancelled my reservation at La Tonnellerie. I sent an email explaining the fact that I had tried and failed to enter the hotel. Not only did I not get an apology, which I felt I deserved, the managers of the hotel actually insulted me, telling me that other people have no problem finding their hotel. 

The final insult from this hotel? They charged my credit card $325 for two nights, which I am disputing. I made an honest attempt to stay at this hotel and spent an hour trying to find it. They should not try to charge me for something I never received.

Huge disappointment

We loved our six night stay in the Studio L'Argilieres in the heart of the old walled town of Beaune. A well appointed apartment in an old 15th century structure, it offered a very generous bedroom/living area with comfortable bed, two armchairs, table and chairs for meals, as well as a beautifully appointed bathroom, separate toilet, fully appointed kitchen (oven, cooktop, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils) and a washing machine and drying space. It was a perfect base where you can be as self-sufficient as you wish or just as easily walk to any of Beaune's wonderful restaurants, wine merchants, patisseries or fromageries. There are many choices but I recommend the Le Monge restaurant in Place Monge for excellent food, friendly staff and good value - their beef bourgoine is a must have. Also the Patisserie Wagner in Rue Monge for culinary delights.

The true Beaune experience.

We had 4 nights at La Tonnellerie.  There is no name marked outside the property, just the house number and no-one was there when we arrived even though we were expected.  It was a bit disconcerting to have to wait outside with our bags for several minutes before Angelique arrived in her car and rushed through a quick introduction and took our payment.

The apartment is very attractive and atmospheric with stone walls and traditional wooden ceiling.  The kitchen area was well equipped.  The bathroom was attractive at first glance but then we found the promised "luxury toiletries" - a soap dish with a dirty piece of used soap in it.  There was also a small dirty wet towel lying on a shelf which had clearly been used as part of the cleaning process - it wasn't as clear whether the cleaning had actually been finished!  We also found several pieces of stone & plaster lying on the bed which had fallen from the upper walls - I guess a hazard of an old building.

Storage was minimal with just one drawer out of four left empty for our clothes. There is no wardrobe, just an open hanging rail in a cleaning "cupboard".  As we were packing up to leave we discovered that on the other side of the cupboard there is a shared balcony overlooking a lovely courtyard - a lovely spot to have a glass in the evening if we had known about it earlier.

The weather was very hot during our stay.  No fan was provided in the room so we had to have the windows open, but were then disturbed at night by cars passing over the very noisy cobbles below. 

We managed to park our car in the street outside for 5 euro a day.  A car is not needed in Beaune itself as the charming old town is easily walkable.  There is a very friendly boulangerie just at the end of the street.
