The 4 stars painted on their gate is optimistic; the accommodations deserve 3 at best. Information about this hotel is out-of-date, including brochures on the front desk - advertised private safe, table tennis, or billiards are non-existent and the swimming pool has been filled in and is now a gravel-based table area.  Furnishings are spare and worn: curled edges in hallway carpet are a tripping hazard, the queen-sized bed was really a double, light switches did not function, and the bathroom light was burned out.  Staff speaks limited English.
Owner and chef Roger Bourrelly offers a multi-course dinner menu, though we opted for a local restaurant so I cannot comment on the food quality. The breakfast included a satisfactory fruit cup, yogurt, scrambled eggs, croissant, juice, and coffee.
This hotel is located in a tiny village that has no apparent tourist attractions. It is a 20 minute drive from the Marseilles airport; closer to the Alix-en-Provence train station than the Marseilles train stop.

If you want a quiet place to retreat from the world, this is it.

A Star Too Many

typical provence style hotel. it is as noted in other reviews in a bit of a remote location, but has much more to offer than the chain hotels around Marseilles airport. The garden and swimming pool area in my opinion in need of some refurbishment.
Rooms and bathroom of good size, but in my humble opinion a bit too dark.
Food is very good and at affordable prices. 
Staff were friendly, but their level of english is as bad as my level of French. Having said this we managed to get the menu translated.

food makes the stay worthwhile

We did not have the best experience at this property.  It was our own fault for choosing one that was so far from town (Aix is 15-20 minutes/37euro by taxi) so that part I cannot blame the hotel for.  We arrived at the train station and called the hotel for a taxi because none were at the station.  They told us one should be coming soon but did not offer to call one or help us.  We finally got one and made our way to the hotel.  The grounds were nice and clean and the place has character.  The man at the front desk had total attitude and was not helpful that day or any of the other days we asked him for help.  The following day, we were invited into breakfast and assumed it was included which we did not find out unti the last day that it cost 10euro per person.  It would have been nice to have been told that up front.  We asked the same crabby man about getting into Aix for the day and what there was to do in the area.  He gave us no information and said we had to go to the tourism office but it was closed that day.  We took a ridiculously expensive taxi into Aix to find that the tourism office as indeed open AND there was a public bus that stopped literally right outside of our hotel for 1euro per person.  The lack in customer service and initiative really ruined the experience for us.  The hotel itself was clean and cute but very old-world and dated.  It is also in the middle of nowhere.  We would not go back.

This hotel has old world charm with wonderful gardens. Breakfast was good and seated in wonderful gardens. Decided to try diner there and we were pleasantly surprised with great affordable dishes and service. There were few dinners and we believe that it is a too well-hidden secret and deserves better patronage. Our room was fairly basic and a touch cramped. I believe there are better more roomier rooms available. I think some renovation and modernization could be helpful.

Old world stay and excellent restaurant

It has been about ten years since I stayed at Auberge Bourrelly ("July 2013" was the earliest date TA let me select). So while I cannot necessarily speak for its most recent updates and offerings, I feel the fact that I'm still thinking about it ten years later speaks to its quality and charm.

I stayed while vacationing throughout France with my parents when I was a teenager. The room was plenty big enough for all of us, which was worth noting because I was a typical teen and wanted space from my parents from time to time. The grounds were absolutely lovely, pool was welcome and refreshing, and you just can't beat the atmosphere.

If you're looking for a luxury hotel with all the spa, fitness, and business trimmings, I suspect this isn't the place for you. If you want an authentic taste of the French countryside with charming comfort and excellent food* definitely check out Bourrelly!

*  As I recall, I tried the artichoke soup on the first night and quite literally ordered it every night we were there. No idea if it's still on the menu; if so, I highly recommend!

One last note: we rented a car for this vacation as we traveled onto Nice and then Corsica after staying in Provence. As other reviewers may have noted, I'm not sure public transit access is the easiest; however, I suspect the fine people running this hotel would be happy to provide further information.
