We were in formed by hotel via email it would be closed on Sunday 9th Oct, this I translated into English, they sent us codes for door & gate, and told keys inside hanging up. We hadn't stayed at Balladins before so weren't aware of the check in  procedure. When we arrived tried to book in on the automatic booking machine - the screen kept saying it had no record of our booking, I put in our credit card which I had used for the booking, my name, tried booking.com  reference, tried every which way & it said no record. So we decided to make a completely new booking and pay again, and then sort it out in the morning when there was actually somebody there, which was not til 8 am. So we stayed in the original room allocated and kept both sets of keys. Next morning I tried to explain situation to the waitress who setting up the breakfast, although she didn't speak any English at all and my french was useless she did grasp what had had happened. she went off to get manager/owner. When he appeared he knew what had happened but was rabbiting on and on even though he could tell I did not understand one word  - yes I did realise what I had done wrong I only needed to use to code for the door to gain entry( we realised this when we obtain a key when we made fresh booking at automated  machine) - anyway he seemed reluctant to give me a refund - I kept pointing to the card machine with my debit card - so then he wrote out a cheque ? and gave me a cheque, I said no bien - I didn't have a french bank account  what was I suppose to do with a french cheque, he kept going on  -I just kept saying no and shaking my head for several minutes before he opened a draw and gave me the cash, why couldn't he of done that to begin with, -HE COULD OF BEEN MORE HELPFUL . I would not stay there again. Although I would use other Balladins hotels :  With hindsight all I needed to do was just put in code on the door which had been sent to me and it was that simple, it could of been mentioned  to me no check in required just go straight to entrance door- (but I thought we had to check in first, didn't even think - but when you have been travelling for 16 hours you are somewhat tired ) The room was small, bathroom very small, but  clean you only get what you pay for, it was OK for overnight stay. WE DROVE TO TOWN CENTRE - VENDOME IS A LOVELY TOWN AND HAS SOME NICE HOTELS IN TOWN CENTRE. WELL WORTH A VISIT.

Be aware of check in procedures

I am writing this in English because I think may English speakers will like this hotel.  I used it as a stop-over en-route from  my home in Limousin to the UK.  It is very easy to find beside the main route, but set back enough to be quiet.   The rooms and comfortable and clean and it was all great for a one-night stay.  There is a fast-food restaurant next door, open most nights, I believe.  The wi-fi was great and the staff polite and helpful.  I got a very good price on booking.com

Convenient and Comfortable

A very convenient and comfortable overnight stopover for anyone driving south.The room was warm and welcoming and the breakfast had a range of food on offer to suite every palate. On the whole it was excellent value for money

Excellent overnight stopover

We booked a night here via Booking.com, on arrival we knew we would be checking in via their 24 hour machine and when we did so it could not find the reservation - there was to be no staff on sitte for a further 3 hours - with it being a Sunday afternoon in Vendome there was no where to go for that length of time -  so we moved on. I understand mistakes happen but then that the cost of the room should be refunded it was not and we have had no response from them or Booking.com - I won't be using either again.

Couldn't even get in!

Balladins is a chain of hotels across France and Belgium.  The rooms are clean, there is off street parking, the rooms are comfortable but soulless with small ensuite shower/toilets.  The breakfast is standard and one can get in using a credit card late at night.  Essentially this type of hotel is fine when travelling, but I would not want to spend more than a couple of nights in one.

That said, the hotel in Vendome was clean and  the staff welcoming; there was free wifi in the rooms.  It cost an extra 7€ for the dog and for a price of €7.50, breakfast was adequate. The hotel only serves breakfast, but there are a couple of restaurants nearby.

I slept well and I was able to exercise my dog in the large garden the following morning, so I will be happy to stop here again when driving back to the UK.
