We stayed in this chateau for two nights during a recent visit to France. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We booked a late check-in and were contacted before our arrival to be given the gate code. We had a meal in the chateau one evening and it was lovely. Our room was clean and tidy. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to my friends!

A very interesting place to stay!

While we enjoyed our stay at Chateau des Reaux, I can totally agree with the points of view of others who did not like it and those who loved it. It's kind of a strange place. 

First you pull up to a closed gate and have to get buzzed in. You won't get any prior instructions before arrival on this - so just buzz and someone will open it. They will then give you a gate code to come and go for your stay. There seems to be plenty of parking, but then, the place was relatively empty when we stayed. 

The exterior is an old castle. It's very pretty. Close up, could use some repairs, but on the other hand not in bad shape, even compared to some of the tourist castles you may visit. The grounds have a moat (my husband for some reason loved this) with ducks and swans who will follow you for food. The grounds are pretty with a small private church and a path to walk around. If you want the feeling of staying in a castle, the exterior definitely meets the mark. 

There are some bikes on the property you can ride and pool. We were there midsummer and the pool was filthy, but it was also pretty chilly so we figured it was too early to actually open it for use. 

The interior is where it gets strange. The lobby lounge area (see photo) is an 80s bachelor pad purple and leather decor. Very tacky. ALL OVER (and I mean ALL OVER - see photo of stairwell with leg pics) are paintings of legs. Some are a bit erotic and go a little further than the leg, and not necessarily suitable for children's eyes. Some are interesting. None of them fit with a "castle" idea. 

We stayed in the Stained Glass Room, one of the smaller rooms. It's a cute little room and the photo on the web site I feel is accurate. It's not large but is spacious enough. Bathroom is big but no special decor there. There was a heated towel rack and large tub. There was only soap and bubble bath provided. There were some glass jars next to the tub that had the bubble bath, but with wet hands I didn't want to pick up a smooth round jar because I figured I'd drop and break it! Note: there is no A/C available in the room. (There is heat). We were told this was because it was an historic building and it was not permitted, but if you stay in the heat of the summer it might be hot at night. It's basically quiet, with the exception of some barking farm dogs who go off on a barking chain reaction in the middle of the night (every night). 

There is not daily housekeeping. We came back one evening to find the room not made up and asked about it and they said they did it every few days (I want to say 3? Don't remember) but they would do it on request. We said it was ok, but then went out for the night and came back to a cleaned room, which they also did the next day. So just ask for daily housekeeping if you want it and they will. 

The owner is a Ukranian man who is very friendly and also a bit eccentric (he's the leg painting collector). He CONSTANTLY offers you drinks and we kept refusing until finally we relented figuring it must be on the house, he was so insistent and the way he stated it was as if he was offering it like an amenity. It isn't. So drink up if you want - but don't let him encourage you to have more than you want with his insistence because you'll see it on the bill. 

Breakfast is included. We are vegan so we explained fruit and bread was fine, but the cook made us oatmeal too, and the owner looked up vegan cuisine (he wasn't familiar with the word or idea) and asked us if his online searches were correct so he could show his cook and be able to offer things to guests in the future. We did appreciate that. I think if you have any special dietary concerns they will do their best to accommodate. While we didn't eat much of what they may offer the bread was supermarket variety. Usually in France you expect a fresh baguette, but this did not seem to be the case. In any event, you will get enough food to fill you up to start your day. 

They do offer dinners for an extra cost but we did not eat dinner there. 

There is free wifi, but it may or may not be in your room. They said it was a weak signal, and it did not always extend to all rooms. We sometimes could get it in the lobby area, and the rest of the time we had to walk over to their office building to get a signal. So, it's there, but unreliable. 

The location is great for seeing the Loire Valley castles. You are kind of in the middle of a number of them so it makes it easy. But you definitely need a car. 

I'd still recommend the place. The leg paintings and main lobby area decor are kind of bizarre, but you're still in a castle. Oh, and it's one of the few with a moat. This for some reason was one of the criteria my husband had for booking a castle - that it have a moat. If you want one with a moat in the Loire Valley area, this is the only one I could find!

Interesting place to stay - both pretty and tacky

Worst chateau ever!
Despite beautiful potential of this place (nice architecture from 15th century, beautiful garden with the lake and chapel), it has been so far our worst experience (and we travel a lot in this region of France).
This is a great example of extremely bad and cheap teste!
The owner (an Ukrainian “poet”) with the “stuff”, made this place to look like a bad joke! From the horrible 700 paintings collection of legs (yes, legs, mostly naive art style), to very, very ugly furniture (cheap metal and plastic), to the breakfast we wonted to laugh about, EVERYTHING is a disaster! The swimming pool is cold and dirty, a lot of spiders in rooms which are not clean, all after all this looked like a cheap hotel in the middle of the nowhere, used as a bordel (most likely). 
We were 2 couples, so they gave us a “duplex”, where we didn’t want to stay, so we asked for another rooms. One was so-so, the other, in the tower was from horror movie!
We couldn’t wait for morning to come, to run away from here.
Most of the photos at booking.com (all those which look a bit normal) are fake (from the other owner).
So, THINK TWICE before you book it. Please.

We came as family to this horrible place - the owner has put his collection of 500 'leg paintings' inside the beautiful buildings, they are truly hideous, along with the unpleasant modern furniture he has decorated the place with.

He has totally ruined the interior of this lovely chateau.

The pool chairs are filthy as are the umbrellas, with no chair covers and dirty pool water.

Breakfast was bottled orange juice, soggy croissants, cold coffee, the worst in the Loire Valley and the owner was shouting at other guests.

There are many many wonderful chateaux in the region, this is absolutely NOT one of them and is very expensive for for what it is.

Our family stayed in Chateau des Reaux just for one night on our way to Saumur.  But that was indeed unforgettable experience!  We felt like being in romantic fairytale castle surrounded by picturesque park. Dinner with candles, charming music, excellent service – the owner of the Chateau really made our stay memorable.  We are grateful for his hospitality!
