We just stayed here and absolutely loved it. If you like open rustic camp pitches with amazing mountain, field or river views this is for you. The reception staff were super friendly and we’re so helpful in everything we needed help with. 

The only negative is the restaurant which was a real let down. We went 3 times hoping it would improve. All food was stone cold, even the mussels! Yuk. We told them about the cold chips on the first visit and they just microwaved them despite there being salad also on the plate! The chef needs replacing. On a 4th occasion we didn’t want to eat so opted for take away pizza which was also cold!! As they never told my husband it was ready for us on the side. Terrible service. It’s such a shame as the setting of the restaurant is just beautiful. 

So despite the terrible restaurant I still give it 5 stars as it’s set in a beautiful area and the staff are great.

Amazing campsite with views but a disappointing restaurant

Really lovely campsite in a beautiful setting with excellent facilities.  We stayed in the 'Crapaud' chalet and it was very welcoming (much, much better than similar accommodation I've stayed in on other campsites), incredibly clean, well equipped and had comfy beds for both us and our two children.  Our boys loved the swimming pool complex (really outstanding and creative for a relatively small site) and attended quite a few of the mini club sessions: pancake making (and eating), mask creation, stone painting,water park games, make a minion and football.  The children club staff were always cheerful and engaged with their little charges.  Loved the fact that on one side of the site you have amazing views over fields to the Vercours mountains and on the other side there is the river with enticing little beaches where the boys enjoyed playing.  Lots to do in the surrounding area.  Incredibly helpful and efficient management team made for a happy ambiance on site.  Hope to be back next year - and will make time to try out the tempting massage facilities and yoga sessions. Would definitely recommend.

A jewel of a campsite

Camped here for 9 nights and absolutely loved it. The facilities are great, the kids (6 & 9) loved the kids club, the pools were fantastic and the views stunning. The food onsite is also very good and reasonable. The camp shop is limited. Location excellent for touring a beautiful area.

Stunning

We stayed for just under two weeks at the end of August 2012 on a comfort pitch at the edge of the site over looking the fields.   It was a beautiful pitch and we really appreciated the space and light compared to the woodland pitches which were a good size but very shaded.  The pools were excellent as were the bouncy castles.  The play park was OK but in full sun so not really usable during the day as temperatures often exceeded 30 degrees.  The kids club was great - really welcoming for our 6 six year old despite her being the only English speaker there - but popular, so not always possible to get a place. The river was a lovely place to paddle, fish for tiddlers with nets, build dams and generally enjoy the view and weather.  The nearest village Chatillon en Diois was charming and the fruit and veg at the weekly market were wonderful as was the Picodon cheese sold at the campsite.  The home made ice cream at the roadside place on the way to Die was yummy.   We went with a full list of places to vist and went nowhere we were having such a relaxing time at the campsite.  I would also recommend the accro'branch place across the road, even our just 3 year old did the pink run and enjoyed the experience.  It is very much a French/Dutch site and quiet so not the place to go if you want UK newspapers, a full supermarket on site or entertainment (although there is some live music twice a week).  Sanitary facilities OK - not amazing but clean, toilet paper, a hairdryer (block 3) and hot showers.  For us, it was ideal.  Enough to do to keep the children entertained but not so much that it spoiled the peace and quiet.  Staff helpful but not very smiley.  We really liked the area, quite a lot of tourists but not 'touristy'.  All in all I would recommend and plan to revisit.

Good campsite - beautiful setting

In July 2010 we spent a fortnight near the small town of Chatillon-en-Diois in France, staying at Camping L’Hirondelle - and had the best campsite holiday ever in one of the loveliest areas of France we've visited in fifteen or twenty years.

Chatillon-en-Diois is situated about an hour and a half south of Grenoble, between the French Alps and northern Provence. There are dramatic craggy mountains all round, as well as woodlands and fields of walnut trees, olives, vines, maize and lavender. The scenery is really magnificent - and we're hard to please on scenery as well as on accommodation - and the area is surprisingly not crowded or well-known.

Chatillon-en-Diois is a beautiful little medieval town on a hilly outcrop in a scenic  valley. It's full of atmosphere, there are quite a number of tourists around in summer but it feels like a real place with its own life and identity. There's a lovely small square with an old tree in the middle and the tables of the Café de la Mairie on either side. As well as doing wonderful icecreams, the Café de la Mairie is a really good restaurant (and again, we don't praise restaurants lightly). There's another great restaurant on the outskirts of Chatillon-en-Diois, Le Caveau, where the tables are set under huge old chestnut trees. There are a few other cafés and restaurants in the village too.

Camping l'Hirondelle attracted us as soon as we saw its website, with 360 degree views of the chalets and tents set among trees and along the river Bez, with views of mountains in every direction and a field of sunflowers to admire from the campsite restaurant. We are a family of two adults and one teenage son, and we've had holidays in campsite chalets by Lake Garda, in the French Alps, on the French Riviera, in the Dordogne, in Brittany and in northern Spain. This was easily the best campsite we've been in. There's lots of space around each chalet - so no staring into the neighbouring kitchens as happens in some places. There are lovely walks along the river, which is quite shallow but great for playing in and having a cooling dip. There are two table tennis tables outdoors in the shade - a requirement for our teenage son. There are two main swimming pools, plus a baby pool, and a triple 'toboggan' slide; there's bike hire on site; and there's a large football area, plus volleyball, pétanque, mini-golf and a kids' club.

The campsite restaurant at Camping l'Hirondelle has fantastic views and serves good food, including great 'ravioles'  and a great salad of 'gésiers', both local specialities, plus lamb, moules frites and the sort of pizzas you get only in Italy and France. The world cup finals were on television while we were there so we joined in the communal viewing and hurrahs (along with a lot of very friendly Dutch visitors). And the campsite staff could not have been more helpful and cheerful.

Camping l'Hirondelle is 4 km from the small town of Chatillon-en-Diois. We cycled there one evening, which was a lot of fun (and mostly flat along the valley). There are great signposted walks amidst vineyards in the area, with their characteristic old stone-built 'cabanons'. The nearest town is Die, about 10 km away, which has plenty of character and history though it's rather rundown in places; it has plenty of shops and a few supermarkets, plus a few good restaurants and a great market once or twice a week. 

There are lots of places to visit in the Drome region and all the outdoor activities that are so well provided for in France: canoeing, canyoning, mountain walks and bikes and river swimming. The area is good for cycling as there are plenty of minor roads and valley routes. There are beautiful walks around the highly picturesque village of Barnave(where there's a very tempting restaurant we didn't get to try), in the dramatic mountain scenery of the Cirque d'Archiane, by the river in the Gorges des Gats and other gorges, near the very attractive town of Saillans and the even more attractive village of La Motte Chalancon - and many more. Further afield, the large town of Nyon has plenty of provencal atmosphere and history plus lots of restaurants, shops and squares; and further south again, there's Vaison-la-Romaine, with its extensive Roman ruins and medieval fortified town, but also more crowds and touristy shops than we'd really enjoy. 

Finally, a word on summer weather in the Drome region. In July 2010, it was hot and sunny most of the day every day, with pleasant cooling breezes amidst the mountains and by the many rivers; and in the evenings, it was easily warm enough to sit out in shirtsleeves but not sticky or sweaty so that sleep was no problem. Our experience in the Alps (in Guillestre east of Embrun) a few years earlier was that it got really cold at night, and of course, on the Riviera or in Italy, it can be far too hot for some of us temperante creatures from Ireland and Britain, so we were delighted to find that La Drome was just right in this as in so many other respects! We certainly hope to return...
