Écœurés par l’expérience....Notre réservation a été confirmée, intégralement payée puis annulée à la dernière minute alors que nous étions en route. Nous ne savons pas si ni quand nous serons remboursés (le propriétaire est injoignable) et moi et ma famille sommes sans hébergement en plein mois d’août! 

Absolutely devastated by how things turned out. Our booking was fully paid for and was then cancelled at the last minute as we were on our way to the estate. We don’t know if and when we will get our payment back (the owner is not contactable) and me and my family have no place to stay in the middle of August!

Les vacances qui tournent mal - to be avoided 

Just spent a week and a half in this fantastic complex of gites in the Rhone Valley near Tresques in the south of France. It's hidden away in a small isolated vale surrounded by forests and olive groves. A wildlife lovers dream location with an abundance of flora and fauna...even the occasional wild boar !

 I am not being racist when I say that we were swimming with frogs. The swimming pool is carefully and cleverly maintained  with an organic chemical free system that keeps the water warm and clear without danger to frogs, dragonflies and all the other creatures drawn to it. A visiting tradesman summed it up...'un petit paradis'. This place would be great for group bookings, perhaps artists, writers, birdwatchers, etc as well as individual gite rentals.

The three rentable gites have been renovated to a very high standard, and in keeping with the old stone farm buildings of the region. The interiors are designed in a tasteful modern minimalistic style that remains sympathetic to the old base architecture.

Terry the owner, an Englishman, has lived in France for forty years and so speaks French like a Frenchman, and is a very gregarious and welcoming host with lots of local information useful to those new to the region.

This is a truly extraordinary property with an 'out of this world' location. I highly recommend it.

Un petit paradis....

We had high expectations of this property following a 12 day walk along the Chemin de Compostelle. It's in a lovely location surrounded by olive groves and a lot of work has clearly gone into the restoration and construction of the gÎtes and the landscaping of the gardens around the natural pool. The interiors are contemporary and well designed, and the kitchen had all the essentials. We even had access to some salad greens and herbs from the chemical free veggie patch. In essence, it was a tranquil haven removed from the exigencies of modern life. There were, however a number of challenges and as a result we actually cut our stay short by three days - thereby forfeiting a considerable amount of money. There was no washing machine - a basic commodity for people staying for a week or more I would have thought, and nowhere really to effectively wash clothes (the basin was two shallow so that left the bath). It was not clear how basics such as toilet paper and towels were replenished (though in fairness we didn't ask). Very critically for us, having spent over two weeks disconnected from the world, the Wifi access promoted on the property website was not available over the five days we were there. While it was acknowledged that this was an issue, there was no sense of any urgent push to have it rectified. While the location was idyllic in many ways, it is important to note that it is some way (around 2.5 kilometres) outside Saint Pons La Calm down a very rocky, winding road full of pot holes as a result of major recent storms. This was a somewhat stressful journey in our rather low-lying Renault rental car, and as significant storms hit the south of France during our stay, we became increasingly concerned about getting out. While there was a large supermarket some 7-8 kilometres away, and shops in other neighbouring villages, Saint Pons La Calm itself did not have any places to buy food (the post office reportedly sold bread each morning). It you want to feel a little connected to life and basic amenities in a typical French village, this is possibly not the place to be. The final major disappointment was the pool. It looked and sounded fabulous on the website - it also looked great in reality, set as it was amongst a range of vivid, flowering Mediterranean plants. Like the Wifi, however there was a technical hitch - the pool cleaner had broken down leaving only half of the pool (very marginally) clean. There was a very unappealing layer of silt covering everything, lots of resident frogs, dragon fly (and other insect) lavae, and even a grass snake. While the pool was lovely to look at, and the resident wildlife fascinating, there was no way that we were going to swim in it. Again, this was disappointing - having paid quite a lot to stay there (and with so many other choices in the area), we would have expected that these things would have been rectified before our arrival. While the setting is lovely, I would recommend this accommodation with caution.
