Épiré is as lovely a French village as you will ever see.
In the very heart of Épiré stands the Logis Saint Aubin.
For my wife and I it was "Somewhere in time' experience. As we opened the ancient portals we could almost hear the music from the movie.
We could have been a 1860's couple, say solid French upper-middle class, notary perhaps, visiting their cousin Alix for the christening of a new born member of the family.
Alix De La Gillardaie, our host and proprietress of the Logis today could have been that long ago cousin. She has the warmth, the caring, the understated elegance for the role.
Our room was vast and comfortable, the salon made you want to just sit and let the past come to you. 
Garden was restful, meals were inventive, dishes captured the feel of the terroir perfectly just as did the Savennières wines.
It was all too short. we were touched by a kind of magical feel. As we crossed the courtyard the 'Somewhere in time' theme back.
This is something to be experienced and more than once.

SOMEWHERE IN TIME

Just back home from a delightful long weekend staying with an old friend in her charming and beautiful family home, where everything - the rooms, portraits, furnishings, even the stack of plates in the dining room upon which sits a delicate lamp - has a story to tell. 

Such is the exquisite nature of Logis Saint Aubin, and its inspirational owner and your hostess, Alix, that you will truly feel this way throughout your stay here.

Alix was immediately available to greet us with her lovely smile and to take us straight to our room, the Portrait Chamber, on the first floor.  It was a large, spacious room in warm russet colours with gorgeous tall wooden shuttered windows, a lovely antique wardrobe, chairs and writing desk; there are plenty of sockets around the main room and bathroom, and Alix has even thought to include a kettle and proper size hairdryer.  We found the bed to be comfortable, and we had a choice of feather or non-allergenic pillows and slept very well every night.

Over some refreshments - locally produced beer for Alix and Mr B, and a much appreciated cup of proper tea for me, from a loose leaf tea blend created by Alix during her time in Paris - we learned a bit more about the local area.  Mr. B is fluent, but I am very rusty with my French ... luckily Alix is practically a fluent English speaker, and 
gave us some useful information about the nearby church of Behouard where we would be able to attend Sunday mass (held outdoors in summer) and its "Fete de la Plate" - a festival of a flat-level boat specific to the area - as well as nearby wineries, such as Domaine de Closel which we intended to visit. 

The house in itself has a grand elegance, with high ceilings and colourful wall fabrics.  There is so much love and care taken in every room, corner, nook and cranny to bring to life the personality of this house - and its owner - through the decor and items (many of which are heirlooms) placed in a particular way that makes this a real home from home.  Completely intentional yet so subtle.   Parts of the house date back to the 18th century, such as the gentle winding staircase which goes up 2 floors (there are 2 large ensuite rooms on the first floor, and another even larger family room on the 2nd floor).  There is also a separate gite on the grounds that sleeps up to 4 people.  

Breakfast each day was a very sumptuous spread of freshly baked bread and croissant, served alongside Alix's own creamy yoghurt, prepared fresh fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, home-made preserves and jams (using home-grown or local produce), and coffee or tea.  There was also a choice of cereals and fresh eggs from her own chickens if you would like, though we found the main spread quite ample.  The green tomato and cherry preserves in particular were extremely good.   

We were staying in the area to attend a friend's wedding over a long weekend, and had dinner arrangements during our time here.  However, with sufficient notice (a couple of days) Alix can also prepare dinner for you at Euro 30 pp, and we truly wished we'd had that chance.  Alix is an incredible chef of superior credentials and the aromas from her kitchen practically drove us wild.  In fact, she is a rather inspirational person in her own right: it takes an exceptional person to successfully run two businesses as she does.

We absolutely loved our short stay with Alix.  All your dreams and expectations of a French heritage B&B will be blown away by what you will experience here, and I guarantee you will want to come back again.  Whether you are passing through, planning a romantic weekend a deux, or just spending time exploring this historic region of France, staying at your 'home-from'home' at the Logis Saint Aubin will be what makes your time here so completely special and utterly memorable.

Outstanding French hospitality in the most superior "home from home" in the Loire Valley

We did have trouble locating the property which was due to my satnav, but having found it what a joy it turned out to be. Alix who lived with her family in the large house not only looks after the large land around the house, but decorates, prepares and cooks the food, and works extremely hard in trying to keep on top of the maintenance required to look after the 17th/18th century house. After a warm welcome we found our room which was very large, with Alix's great grandmother looking down on us, as well as an unknown male. There was 9 of us for dinner and was like a dinner party with wine thrown in. Although our fellow guests did not speak English Alix endured no-one was left out, and later we saw the house bats flying off as dusk approached. Dinner was great, as was breakfast the following morning. Meals need to be booked in advance and although there is a church next door the clock bells stop after 10pm and do not chime again until 8am. This ended up as an enjoyable overnight stay with a difference. We would be glad to return.

Charming old house with an equally charming owner.

Alix [the owner] was most welcoming and and friendly and speaks excellent English, and her cooking is superb. We stayed for 2 nights and had her home cooked dinner on both.
The house is charming with large comfortable bedrooms hung with family portraits as it has been in the family for several generations.
Epire is a charming small village close to Angers, the Loire, and other local attractions.
All in all a perfect spot

A truly delightful spot

We had an overnight stop here and could easily have stayed longer. The house is owned by Alix, who has lived here since childhood and it really does feel like she is welcoming you to her family home. A warm welcome and a chat over a cold beer was followed later with the most fabulous meal, which she cooked herself, accompanied by wines   Breakfast in the morning was equally delightful with local fruits, fresh bread, preserves all with a local connection and eggs from the farmyard if you wished. The house is full of interesting curios too, like the massive grand piano, a map of the French Empire...and so many more. We had the top floor room, which is big enough for a family. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here - and make it for more than just the one night!!
