Let's start with something positive: The restaurant is lovely situated, surrounded by foresty hills and with a view at a big pond with ducks. We had reserved for 12h30 and got there by 12 because we wanted to have a drink first in the lounge area. Arriving there apparently there was no such area so we were placed at our table right away. Our friends were already there. We had a table overlooking the pond side so we were contect. We ordered an aperitif and got our menu's. After 10 minutes someone came asking if we had decided yet and we replied we were still waiting for our drinks. Again 10 minutes later they arrived and we got some appetizers which were delicious. We ordered and sometime later ordered the wine, one bottle of red for 3 of us and one had a glass of Muscat to go with her foie gras. So this restaurant (in my opinion) is very oriented on meat. You get it with everything, even when you specifically asked to leave it out. This is sad and unnecessarily. I had the oeuf as an entree which was delicious and served with a sort of cracker with ham which served no purpose whatsoever. All entrees where beautifully served. The ordered wine however came when we had almost finished our entrees which was a bit sad. After this I ordered the Noix St Jacques. The tongue of veal with I did not want with my main course came anyway and because you do not want to eat alone when everyones already finished I decided to simply scrape the veal off (and with it all other ingredients and the taste). Since this was not a big dish I had plenty of room to try the cheese. Nicely presented and a good choice. A second bottle of water had to be asked twice. The desserts which we were urged to order right at the beginning came, I had taken the chocolate pie but missed the taste of chocolate. It was more of a caramel thing with corn (yes corn!). After having had a coffee we were ignored and besides for paying nobody came asking if we wished something else (another coffee or digestive). So, although for the others the experience was very positive I personally will not be going for a second time.

Not what I expected

This restaurant worth a stop during your visit to Alsace. It is certainly the best restaurant in the area. All products are fresh. For exemple, their green peas were taken from their garden couple of hours before. The presentation is well done and flavors are excellent. They have also a good wine list with organic wines. The service is lovely.

The Au Vieux Moulin has been in the same family for at least 3 generations, possibly 4.  It's really off the beaten track and yet convenient for the Autoroute A4 Reims-Strasbourg.  About 5 hours from Calais too.
The rooms are simple, but well appointed.  Great bathrooms.  The restaurant is very good and clearly well used by local people judging by the number of full tables on significant dates.   The menu is very good and extensive for the size of the restaurant and they are rightly proud of their wine list.  Breakfast is a very good buffet.
The countryside around is stunning and the hotel lies, as you'd expect for an old mill, on a stream at the end of a lake.  Ducks and other waterfowl abound.  Lots of walks start or finish at the hotel.
The family take trouble over all their guests and speak English very well, as well as German.  The Au Vieux Moulin is well worth a detour and yet if you're driving to Southern Germany or towards Strasbourg, it's hardly a detour.

Stunning Quiet Hotel Restaurant

Large family room with two bedrooms, excellent buffet breakfast and a fantastic welcome. This was a great place to stay en route from Switzerland to the Netherlands off the beaten track and a beautiful lake and forest to take a morning stroll with the children before being stuck in the car for the next 4/5 hours.

There is not a very great choice, but all plates are  delicious.

I appreciated very much the Black angus steak with a great choice of vegetables .

The wine "pinot gris" was  marvellous  for a ridiculous price.

The area is quite remote and absolutely quiet. Hotel is in lovely setting directly beside its own lake and at the edge of the forest. Allows for very good walks in the area.
Restaurant is excellent, both for dinner and breakfast. Rooms are basic but clean and with comfortable beds.
