Don't really understand some of the 'average' reviews here. This hotel was the cheapest (49 EUR for a twin room) on a 7 night tour and was easily in the top two of those we stayed in.  

The rooms are comfortable, staff excellent, free WiFi and free parking. What more do you expect for the price??

We liked this hotel. 

The staff were friendly, the rooms were clean and quite large and the wifi was fine. We had been walking, so we had dinner and breakfast in the hotel, and we were not disappointed. Both meals were good, and the dining room was bright and cheerful, with a great position looking out over the street.

This seemed to be one of the only hotels in the pretty town of Espalion. The hotel is great value for money. I had a room on the top (3rd) floor; it was refurbished and had a large bathroom, air conditioning and a very comfortable bed. There was also a desk and flat screen television (only French channels), as well as electric blackout shutters on the windows. The room itself was very clean and tidy, the air conditioning was very effective. Only downside is that the room access is provided by a traditional key as opposed to a key card, so if there is more than one person staying, the hotel can only give one key out. The wifi worked *most* of the time (in room and public areas) but was fast.

Travelling as a couple showing my mother through the Aveyron, the Hotel de France was easy to find as it is located on the main road through Espalion. The rooms are surprisingly quiet and even on New Year's Eve we didn't hear much street noise. There is plenty of on-street parking and the hotel has its own parking lot behind the building. It was very much the off season and we were slightly surprised to find the reception desk unmanned when we arrived at about 6:30pm. However, our room keys and instructions for late night entry to the hotel were clearly displayed so no problems. Both the double room and the twin room and their respective bathrooms were simple, clean and comfortable. Not masses of space but we were only staying for one night. Hotel staff had already answered my enquiry as to whether the restaurant was open for dinner (no, but they gave us some very good recommendations which we followed - see my review of L'Authentique, Espalion). Buffet breakfast the next morning was similarly simple but everything we needed, including excellent coffee. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit this region for a day or two (Laguiole is approximately a 20 minute drive). 

We stayed here with a group of cyclists on our St Malo to Nice event.  The rooms are comfortable and good value.  There's plenty of parking behind the hotel and the wifi works well.  We'd definitely use it again.

We wanted to stay in Espalion, and this was the only one we could find. It certainly is a budget hotel. At €49 per night, you get what you pay for. The rooms are advertised as soundproof, which is important because the room isn't air conditioned (unless you pay another €60) and its noisy when you open the window. I'm sure if you are a pilgrim on the compostela, it's a welcome respite, but for regular tourists, pick somewhere out of town.  On the plus side, it's clean and right in the middle of town.
