Stayed one night while crossing Northern France. Lovely olde worlde traditional French hotel, lovely entrance hall and wooden staircase. Welcoming friendly owners. 

Rooms very comfortable, bathroom small but no other problems. No aircon as you would expect in an hotel of this nature.  We did not find the hotel noisy at all. 

The hotel is situated a convenient 15 min drive from the Verdun battlefields. 

The meal in the restaurant was quite simply superb, good varied choice of dishes, with good options for vegetarians. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

Good hotel, great restaurant

We stopped for lunch at La Sirene in Etain, and were glad we did. The Owners and staff were friendly, the place was spotlessly clean, the food was excellent and the prices were just fine. What more can you ask for when travelling? Well done Restaurant La Sirene for a great meal and service.

Great lunch

I remember staying in similar hotels in the dimn and distant past. The room was pleasant, the Monsieur who greeted me was friendly , spoke some English, not a criticism as I expecting  French, more of a bonus for when my French ran out. My room was clean and had everything I wanted and was a good price. Breakfast was okay with the usual continental selection

Etain is a small town 20km east of Verdun. The LaSirene is a family owned and operated restaurant and hotel that has been in operation for many years and has much old world charm. The accommodations are a little dated but clean, comfortable and very peacefully quiet! The surrounding property in the rear is home to a herd of dairy cows that will greet you at the fence before dinner and graze the pasture while you sit on the rear veranda with a glass of wine and watch the sun set! To me and my wife it's the way to spend a wonderful few days with great french friends, great food and wine in a wonderful setting in a beautiful part of France! Hope to visit there again soon!

Warmth of family and good friends

This hotel was very 'French'. It reminded me of hotels I stayed in in France in the 1960s. An older style hotel which was a little basic. 

The room was clean and comfortable but the furniture was flat-pack and the decorations 1970s and very tired. The bathroom was a later addition and felt like it. The shower cubicle was a little dirty, the shower hear broken and the toilet seat broken. 

The whole room could have been sorted for less than £500 so rather disappointing. 

The restaurant on the other hand was excellent. Food and service very good. Ambience good. First class in every way. 


A Bit of a Mixed Bag

As overnight stops go, this was pretty far below par.

First, the good point; the restaurant was unassuming but, the dinner was wonderful. Surprising combinations, that worked so well, and a staff that was attentive without being intrusive. Travelling with a pair of young girls, it was great to see them treated so well, too.

The accommodation, however, left much to be desired.
The bed was OK and the room clean; the shower, though, was broken and the cubicle mildewed and mouldy. The toilet seat had a broken fixing and slipped if you so much as breathed.

The breakfast, unfortunately, did not follow the example set by the previous night's dinner.
No hot food, merely a sparse selection of cereals and some croissants; not even sliced bread for the toaster, though a small plate of it arrived 10 minutes after I'd sat down - imagine how long that lasted!
