This is a delightful family run hotel.  The rooms are very comfortable and very pretty.  Breakfast and dinner are in a charmingly decorated dining room or on the terrace if the weather is good enough.  It is all very good value

Delightful family run hotel

We spent a couple of days exploring the Livradois-Forez park in France and stayed at the Hotel de l'Echo in La Chaise Dieu. We were really surprised by this beautiful small hilltop town with its magnificent Abbey and far reaching views and by the comfort and level of service at this family run hotel. We had a lovely room with a big bathroom en suite. The hotel was quiet and in the morning with the bedroom window open the only sound was birdsong. We had a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant - and chose home cooked specialties of the region at very reasonable prices. The continental breakfast was generous. We had a lovely stay and hope to come back again - perhaps in July or August when the tourist trains are running through the park. Top-tip - La Chaise Dieu is at an elevation of 1000m - so pack an extra layer, then you will be comfortable and feeling on top of the world!

On the positive side,nice staff,clean facility and quiet at night.
Good location near the Abbatiale of la Chaise Dieu.
However no wifi in the rooms ,only near the dining room and even there very sluggish.
Worse part was the breakfast ,practically nothing to eat and very poor quality for what was offered.Not even fresh cheese in the country of cheese,altogether a disgrace.
Expensive for what it delivers.

Improvements needed

Well placed in the centre of town, clean and comfortable. Very helpful staff and an excellent dining room. Parking is available next to the hotel but it is public..though free. Not all rooms have wifi..ours didn't.

Well located

The hotel is attached to the old abbey and faces the large, public, tree-lined courtyard and the location is simply stunning. It's an old building but still very comfortable, with reasonably spacious rooms, excellent bathrooms and good facilities. The breakfast was large and delicious (continental). The lady at reception was lovely and kind. We had a fabulous two-night stay here. We would have tried the restaurant, but we are vegetarian and it did not cater for that.

Beautiful and special

The Hotel de l'Echo is located in the small town of La Chaise-Dieu.  The town is very small with only a few hotels, but from what I could tell, the Hotel de l'Echo seemed to be the nicest.  It's located just off the main avenue through town, right beside the abbey.  It's about a 1 minute walk to the abbey entrance.  Our room was very clean and of moderate size.  It was quaintly decorated with a nice view.  The bathroom was quite large, though the toilette had to be flushed twice to dispose even of the smallest amount of paper.  There is no lift.  The proprietor was very friendly and accommodating.  She spoke some English.  The dinning room was  cute and dinner  delicious, though I thought it was somewhat overpriced.  If you're not traveling in high tourist season, expect to eat dinner at the hotel.  La Chaise-Dieu does have a few restaurants / cafes, but they're not always open and some of them look slightly shady.  The village of La Chaise-Dieu is incredibly picturesque, and the drive from  A75 is very nice.  Apart from the abbey, there's not much to do, but the abbey is worth seeing if you're in the region.
