This is one of the most charming, interesting and beautiful chambres d'hotes I have stayed in - and I have stayed in many throughout France.  The character of the house, beautiful bedroom with idyllic views over the river and beyond, magical garden and most welcoming host Cathy all made for a most enjoyable and relaxing stay.  The house is full of history, both the building and the objects contained within it; a sense of culture and heritage pervades.  Both dinner and breakfast were excellent - home cooking and plentiful.  The village is also interesting and from the people I met friendly and very community focused - especially on music events.  A real find - a jewel by the Villaine!

One of The best room

My friend and I stopped here on our cycle down to the south of France. Don't do it if you think it's a good idea, it isn't.
Cathy, the patron, was a wonderful host who cooked an amazing meal where we joined her and the family

A real gem

Though I am a writer by profession I find it difficult to put into words the wonder of our experience at La Grand'Maison. First, the house: an amazing 17th century manor house with all the modern conveniences but retaining many of the original details -- the tiles in the front hall for example, the original stair case( think A Take of Two Cities), the amazing beams running the lengths of the commodious, high-ceilinged rooms. Our sparkling clean bedroom, almost a suite, really, ran the entire width of the house. The two huge windows looked out onto the back garden, and in the morning, we awakened to  birdsong and the bells of the local church. But as amazing as the house and gardens were, more amazing still was the owner, Cathy. She runs the place with the most apparent ease and high good humor. (Not to mention kindness. We arrived during the gas strike and had, we thought, just enough gas for the four hour trip back to Paris. In other words, no gas for day trips. Cathy offered us her car for the day. Enough said.) The breakfasts, with home-pressed apple juice, and home-made jams were wonderful, and you would be making a big mistake if you didn't eat at least one evening meal there. You must let Cathy in advance.) This is not a place for partiers or thrill seekers. The village is very small. The pleasure comes in knowing that such authentic places still exist. We left with regret and many memories, and are already planning a longer return trip. Five stars simply isn't enough.

Not Enough Stars

Ths is the dream of travelling through the French countryside- a most elegant and comfortable residence, great food and a charming and friendly hostess. What more could you ask? Ths beautifully restored old home in a pretty village near Langon, Brittany, sits overlooking a large garden. My second floor room was huge, with two windows overlooking the garden. Like the rest of the house, it was beautifully furnished in a traditional and very tasteful manner. The ensuite bathroom was a modern addition, again very well appointed. We had half board, and our evening meal was memorable for all the right reasons. Breakfast was als excellent. Staying here was one of the great highlights of our holiday. Unfortunately the wifi was not working properly when we arrived.
