My spouse and I took an 8-week road trip in France this fall. An unexpected change in plans landed us on the doorstep of Blandine, the owner of Les Esplanes in La Garde-Adhèmar.  La Garde-Adhèmar is a tiny medieval village in the Drôme Provençale department in SW France that sits atop a hill.  Les Esplanes is located a few minutes away and offers guests two B&B rooms or a self-sufficient gîte.  We chose to stay in the spacious and airy gîte that is nicely furnished in mid-century modern.  The small, serviceable kitchen has a great territorial view. (We did not miss having a microwave and oven.) The living area has two comfortable sofas, and a dining table sits four.  (There is no TV.)  There is a large separate bedroom with a king-size bed.  While we were there, the weather turned stormy and chilly, and the gîte’s heating unit kept us warm and comfortable.  Blandine checked in on us periodically and recommended and made dinner reservations for us at restaurants in nearby Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux that were splendid.  There is a large swimming pool on the property that looked welcoming but not in November!  We highly recommend staying at Les Esplanes with one caveat – the wifi is spotty out there in the countryside.  So, for those who want to get away and unplug, Les Esplanes is a calm, comfortable retreat. 

Lovely retreat in the French countryside

... yes, the setting is peaceful, off-the-beaten-path, and appealing despite its proximity to a major nuclear plant. But essential modern amenities are missing. We stopped by in January and found the rooms were sparely heated @20°C. An ecological choice or a cost control measure (?) but were cold everywhere, in our room as well as in the common dining area. Huge problem for us was the lack of WIFI connection just about anywhere since the "Router" is located in the host's home and does not reach the guests' outbuildings. Imagine you rely on WIFI for work or your kids want to watch their favorite Netflix Show. The pricey yet uneventful, somewhat dull, homemade cuisine lacked inspiration and 'volonté creative' . The host was pleasant as well as the other couple visiting. The grounds are well kept, the rooms are no-none-sense functional but again lacking of what makes France such a desirable destination: charme, artsy originality and authenticity.  Try this place in the summer months and enjoy 'le radis noir'.

We won't be back! Here is why...

The room was lovely, simple, stylish and had an understated design which emphasized the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The hosts were personable, graceful and charming and made me feel that I was a guest in their home.

It was a pleasure to share conversation with them.
The meals were lovely, just perfect.
I loved the music.

In fact it was an absolutely perfect stay.

Beautiful stay in the countryside

Uniquely designed rooms with variety of choices each with romantic character and modern amenities. 

Situated with idyllic expansive rural views and several quiet outdoor spaces to enjoy including a classy pool. 

We arrived as the sun was setting for a one night stay and received a very warm welcome by Blandine and Jean-Louis. 

We joined them for dinner in their beautiful outdoor garden setting with another French couple who were also staying. We enjoyed good conversation and fabulous authentic French family food and wine from local producers prepared by them both. We enjoyed the friendly service and full breakfast in garden and stayed until midday checkout and would have loved to stay longer. 

This was a very memorable and enjoyable experience for two New Zealanders in France for the first time. 

Highly recommended. 

Spectacular Countryside Retreat

This is a place of peace, love and happiness where each room is nearly a suite. Some equipped with a kitchenette.
Twice a week the owners organize a ‘table d hote’. Home cooking with wonderfully fresh local ingredients and loads of rose wine, with a view on the valley and the nearby village... breathtaking

Such a lovely place!!!!

I and 2 friends stayed over for a wedding occasion. We were amazed by the beauty of the place: quiet, charming and well maintained. The service of the couple was refined and friendly. The room were modern, clean, well organized. The breakfast is amazingly good and enjoyable facing the sumptuous view. Place to recommend!

One night stay for a wedding in Provence 

We had a wonderful stay here.  Our room was beautiful, modern and unique with lots of natural materials, and the grounds were lovely, with a great view of the valley. Our bathroom was very cool, with an open shower and large bay window (with a curtain for privacy).  Our hosts were friendly and attentive and very accommodating.  The property is well situated to nearby towns and sights.  And because it's off the beaten path, we were able to go for beautiful, scenic morning runs.  I would definitely recommend Les Esplanes.

Wonderful place to stay!

This place is wonderful. Secluded from the bustling valley of Bolene, Blandine and Jean Luois welcomed us in their fully renovated house. The rooms are spacious, clean, decorated with lovely furniture and art. We felt home immediately. The swimming pool is there to give a nice refreshing break. The village is 2 km away with a couple lovely restaurants and a gorgeous central square which is so peaceful. Breakfast was lovely too. We will definitely go back!
As for the website it is true to reality - the place does look like the webpage and pictures.

Stayed 2 enchanting days

The location is absolutely superb, the rooms are spacious and Anne & Jean-Pierre are fantasic hosts! Anne is a very good cook and served us typical food, absolutely delicious! She even shared her recipies with us. They made us feel extremely welcome and we will definitely go back.
