Great small hotel with very, very nice garden. Rooms are phantastacally and la cuisine is a dream. Finally all the people of the stuff and the owner himself are very, very friendly in every language and they really make you feel very very fine. I highly recommend.

A Dream in the Normandy

This was the last  stop on our tour of France, and what a find..Just two hours away from Calais.
This is a Relais &  Chateaux Hotel, so one expects the best, and this was no exception.
The Hotel is quirky but has a nice feel about it, From the well maintained car park you have to go through a small lovely garden, which is beautifully maintained and well laid out.
One of the owners Michel was there to greet us and absolutely no formalities to go through for Check In. We were shown are rooms (we had two) and both were great. Whoever, did the Décor certainly had a flair for it and that could be said about all the main areas, Lounge, Restaurant and breakfast rooms.  The Hotel had an open kitchen with a glass partition,, so you could see all the food  being prepared..

Obviously not the cheapest, but you pay for what you get.

The pre tasters was a nice touch, considering one of our party was vegetarian, Jean Paul even allowed for that.

That evening in the restaurant they had 20 people and Michel alone served everyone, whilst he had his work cut out it did not effect the service. It was spot on. In the kitchen Jean Paul had no helpers, yet he continued to present all courses on time and were well presented and beautifully cooked. How is it that some people just get it right. We loved the place and the service. Hopefully, we will be back. Well done Michel and Jean Paul

Super Manoir des Saules

There is a hint of Disney about the building.  It dates from the C19, but looks much older.  Inside it is furnished with a great many antiques, but our room was very spacious and comfortable with a superb modern bathroom, a sitting area, a small balcony overlooking the garden and an air conditioning unit (which we did not need to use).  The dinning rooms, lounge and exterior were well maintained and there is a large enclosed car park.
Dinner was a fixed price menu with excellent amuse bouches, a choice of two starters and three main courses and a desert.  Everything was very well cooked, using fresh produce, much from the garden.  Portions were generous.  Quality wines were available by the bottle and glass at reasonable prices.
We stayed for one night on the way back from the Lot and will definitely return.

Interesting Accommodation - Good Food

My wife and I went for a last minute romantic WE to Manoir des Saules, because it was not too far from our place to go just for the WE, and because we thought it would be ideal to have a nice and calm rest. 
The first thing that surprised us was the interior and decoration of the place. Everything looked old and/or outdated. Our room was no exception : old papers with too many flowers on the walls, recent XIX's century style lamps... and a pink refrigerator, for what it's worth. The place felt like a fake "authentic" French manoir to lure foreigners on their honey moon into thinking they were staying at a traditional Normandy manoir...
Then we realized that we were definitely not the right crowd (everyone else staying those 2 nights had at least 3 decades more than us), which could explain why we did not enjoy the old fashioned style. It might also explain why did not have any functional WiFi connection (nor cable ethernet either). Let's face it : a place in 2014 where I pay more than 150€ per night better have a good WiFi router. I consider this a standard. It was not the case. Result for us was poor planning of our schedules for the couple of days, lacking a decent connection.
On the service side, we had a warm welcome from the manager, but then shortly realized he was alone for the entire place, which made for really poor service overall. The only 2 people we saw in our 2-days stay were this guy at the reception desk (supposed to also serve drinks... when he happens to be around) and the restaurant's chef. We came down on the terrasse both nights and had to wait for a good half hour before he appeared. I had to specifically ask to order drinks. He offered very few options, even though shortly after that I was holding a very decent wine menu in the restaurant... go figure. One positive note on that front : the restaurant, even though as tacky as the rest of the hotel, delivered a great dinner.
In the end, this place was just way overpriced, and missing what we consider basics for that price range.

Very pricey, and in decline

Auberge is the atmosphere. A very comfortable house with lots & lots of pictures & objets d'art, some for sale.  Not a chateau & scarcely a manoir but a beautifully kept and quirky hotel to spend a night in.  No willow trees except painted on the lounge ceiling!  Warm welcome from the friendly proprietor, & his minimal number of charming  staff. We had a large, luxurious & comfortable room,  but it lacked any sort of information pack about the hotel or the area.  Did not locate any non-French TV channels - no guide.   Dinner was to us terribly late & drawn out - no orders taken  till 8 pm & first course arrived 8.45 - & terribly expensive.  Costly ingredients not matched by real gastronomic treatment, & the "5-course"  menu's amuse bouches are served as snacks with your pre-dinner drinks, the mignardises with coffee (extra),  so really 3 courses for the money.  We did not go for the "6" course option.  Breakfast very good indeed, lots of fruit, dairy & bakery, excellent coffee, high price.  Lacks grounds or attractive environs to wander in, it is in a plain little village, but OK for a single night.

Not quite up to some expectations

The place is eclectic to put it mildly. But that is fine although having a fake xix century lamppost in the bedroom is not really what I expect from Relais and Chateaux branded place. The service was very good and the place was very well maintained. The dinner however was a disappointment. The portions were huge. I got with my older son a pullet and after we have eaten breasts with some vegetables we have received solo the rest of the chicken. It was like a bad joke. The French family at the next table was laughing as well. The deserts were fantastic but the cod for the main course was dull as a badly staged opera. The dinner was overpriced beyond belief. We have spent for 4 of us almost 400 Euros and I do not mind the money but the quality was not even near the pricing. The breakfast was however great. Great choice and very fresh.
