Our group of ten Vermont cyclists spent 10 magnificent days at the Chateau in July 2019  and were among the first guests of the very hospitable new owners, Pascal and Valérie Debec. They were superb hosts, solicitous of our every need, even preparing gourmet dinners for us on two nights that were memorable highlights of our trip. Our group has stayed in many great places on cycling trips in France over the years. This was the best! 

The Chateau has a rich history and is beautifully renovated with luxurious accommodations ideal for a group like ours or perhaps a large family or 4-5 couples. It offers gite-style, self service arrangements, different than our usual B&B arrangements, but we enjoyed cooking dinners ourselves at the Chateau and eating at the long table on the terrace or inside in the dining room. There are two kitchens, upstairs and down. Both are fully equipped. The bedrooms are charming and beautifully furnished, each with its own bathroom.

The village of Lanne has an excellent boulangerie/patisserie right next to the Chateau, and a small pizzeria and a large public swimming pool are 100 steps away. There’s not much else in town, apart from astounding views of the Pyrenees foothills In every direction, but there are epiceries and restaurants In nearby Arrette and Aramits and lots of options In Oloron-Ste-Marie, 20 minutes by car. 

The Chateau is ideally situated for cycling either the endless nearby Cols of the high Pyrenees on unimaginably small roads to the south, east and west, or the gentler, rolling terrain on equally small and quiet roads to the north. It is indeed a cyclists paradise, and there are an abundance of recreational options for non- cyclists: vineyards, trekking, randonee, rafting, etc. , We hope to return and could not recommend the Chateau de Porthos more enthusiastically.

How fun to stay in a chateau that once belonged to one of the men known as The Three Musketeers!  Our room here was very large with an incredible view.  We left the window open at night to get the fresh night air.  The stars out the window were amazing. The bathroom is also huge with modern fixtures and a good shower.  The wifi worked well.  Michele spoke good English and helped us plan our days.  She is very knowledgeable of this very beautiful area.  At one point we thought we might've made a mistake and went to Switzerland, not France because of beautiful meadows framed by the mountain peaks.  Michele laid out a fabulous breakfast every morning complete with a home made pastry.  They have really taken advantage of the view in adding a huge terrace with gorgeous flowers.

Historical Property

We stayed overnight on our way between Spain and Brittainy.  It was pouring with rain when we arrived but Michelle, the owner, made us most welcome and even provided a carpet for our wet dog.  The bedroom was beautiful and huge and the bed was very comfortable.  There were even fresh flowers placed in the room.  We went out to a local Bistro for our evening meal but the next morning Michelle provided us with a lovely breakfast of fresh bread, coffee, yoghurt, jams and fruit juice.  The gardens are also beautiful.  I just wish it hadn't been raining so that we could have walked round them a bit more.  This place is a Gem and I would definitely recommend it. Also Michelle speaks perfect English.

Fabulous place to stay

Beautiful set up in a small and quiet town about  30 minutes from Pau ? The reception from the owners was fantastic and made you feel at home right away. The castle was upgraded and renovated 10 years ago and they kept the decorations from the XVI century.
The continental breakfast was fantastic with plenty of local products.
Now the hotel does not have a phone or TV in the room .Wifi works very well with no problem as well as cellular phones
Prices are reasonable for the area and there no penalty for room cancellation.
Payments are cash or through Paypal ,no major credit cards are accepted. French ,English and Spanish are spoken.
Do you want a Castle experience this is the place to stay .

What an amazing place!! Chateau de Porthos is situated in the picturesque village of Lanne de Baretous. I can not recommend this beautiful home more highly. It's absolutely picture book, and had to pinch myself to believe we were there. The room we stayed in was immaculately clean, the bathroom was a great, the bed was comfortable and the linen, crisp and fresh. The house itself is full of charm and history. Michelle and Louis are wonderful hosts, and have really done an amazing job of restoring this beautiful home. These historical places are too often left to ruin, and its a special person who has the vision and patience to restore a spot in history, not to mention a beautiful old house in a breathtakingly beautiful location. Michelle and Louis have done it so well!! They deserve many accolades!! It's a secret little destination that I would recommend to everyone! 

P.s there is the best patisserie just up the little road that you will love!!

Picturebook perfect!!

How often do you get to stay in a chateau, and for a bargain price at that? Everything is classy and peaceful.The chateau and surrounding property are simply lovely, and full of history for fans of Alexander Dumas. The hosts are charming, even after you accidently run over one of their lanterns along the driveway. The rooms are huge and well-appointed.....like you were in a chateau. We were in the MiLady room and my lady was impressed. It was too cool for breakfast on the terrace, but breakfast in the huge dining hall was plentiful and tasty. You are a bit out in the boonies, but it would be a great base for touring the beautiful surroundings or for Xcountry skiing in the winter. And there are restaurants in the area, or your hostess will cook up a menu upon request and sufficient numbers. Take a detour and go spoil yourself.
