Travelling back from our 20th anniversary in Italy we arrive the afternoon of the 2018 World Cup Final just as France won!!!!!! The town went crazy and we shared a few beers with the locals.  However we had not booked anywhere to stay and all hotels were booked to due some big competition going on locally. We got chatting to Mairie at Le Bistrot De La Mairie who kindly took pity on us and opened up her beautiful guest house to us.  It was a truly magical stay with the hoots and toots of cars driving around the town in the small hours.  Thank you Mairie we couldn't believe how lucky we had been. 

Amazing location

We booked this Maison Superior based upon its description on Booking.com, and the fact that it offered "Private Parking" without need to pre order, for 15 euro per night.

When we arrived at the hotel, it was in a very narrow back street, but had a pair of large doors in the  wall which we assumed to be access to the private parking, the staff member who greeted us  (as we parked in the road) declined to open these doors as he said there was inadequate access for our medium sized car.
He told us to park on the street, although there was inadequate room to do so without putting our car at risk. Following repeated requests for access to the promised Private parking , we finally gave up and went to seek something better with more helpful staff. 

 unless you are a cyclist or hiker we advise caution before booking this Maison inferior.

By No Means Superior

The owners of this grand old house, live in Paris during the week, and apparently come home at weekends.  It is managed by their next door neighbour, who is around from 5.30-7.30pm, to let guests in.  The neighbour leaves a note on the door with her phone number.  She then comes back to make a continental breakfast, which is taken round a large, oval table.  Outside, there is no other indication that this is a guesthouse.
When you stay here, you feel like you are guests in a grand and wonderful, old and rather faded town house.  It is full of the family's furniture, personal possessions, paintings, photos and religious objects.  The furniture is very grand, with the biggest beds that we have ever slept in.  They is a garden outside with chairs, tables, loungers and parasols.  We loved it, though some might find it a little faded and old-fashioned.
They allow dogs too, at no extra charge.

Experience the grandeur and opulence of an old, french town house

The place is not easy to find, its in a side street no more identifiable than any other premise in that street. We gave a proposed arrival time as ad states reception not always manned but when we got there no one answered the door , not helpful given we weren't exactly sure it was the right place. Phone calls didn't help so we stood like lemons outside the place for about 20 minutes wondering if we were in the right place and mulling whether to move on 

Eventually a staff member arrived , just as were thinking of leaving. They were polite, helpful  and pleasant stayed long enough to show us our room and assist with some local enquiries then left, returning the following morning. At departure we did not get a bill or receipt so not 100 percent sure of the cost

The stay was pleasant enough, the room was clean and had most things you wanted, there was no air-con , which is okay but a fan would have been appreciated for the heat  The room was quite large but decor in the building is a matter of taste, our thoughts were its period, but which ? 

Breakfast is continental and communal and  is taken around a large dining table.

As the other trip advisor review says - C19th elegance with all the trimmings. Old town house in a old hilltop town. -Good for a stopover if you fancy something unusual and reasonably priced. The owners have opted to retain original features and decor which is very charming. Others might look at it as being tired and run-down. A matter of personal preference and taste. We liked it. Take a walk to the city centre, panoramic views from the main square. Selection of brasseries in front of the cathedral and stroll home via a street where each shop front is dedicated to exhibiting the work of local artists.

Experience a traditional, C19 French town house

A French version of the 'Boutique Hotels' we experienced in Equador! 19th Century decayed elegance with all the trimmings. The free-standing bath had claw legs and although a hand shower  was provided the thought of the water which would finish up on the floor was very discouraging – so I had my first baths for probably 20 years! Apparently there are no showers in the house.
The normal French breakfast was up to standard and the manager was friendly and helpful. Overall an unusual and interesting experience.
