Stopped on our way down from Col du Pourtalet - had lunch, and it was fantastic. Simple - lamb chops, salad, cheese plate - but one of the best meals we’ve had in France. The couple that run it are lovely - warm, friendly and funny - but very professional. We enjoyed chatting with them.  And it was excellent value. Recommend it highly!

Great meal, great service, lovely people

This is a simple hotel set beside a rushing river some distance (6km) outside Larus in the Pyrenees.  Rooms aren't luxurious but gave us a good nights sleep.  We ate dinner on the outside terrace, it got a bit chilly but the food was quite acceptable.   We took a wander round Laruns the next morning, an interesting little town. Then on the way to Spain we stopped at Lac de Fabreges to take the chair lift up to the station for the Train d'Artouste - the highest train in Europe apparently though in reality it's a toy train where you sit 2 abreast and rattle along exposed to the weather!

For the price - first class

Excellent bar, friendly staff, local people who are singing (don‘t know where they are coming from...), mild and breezy climate, cool bar, local beer, did not try the food, nice terrace, good view, fantastic ride with the bike down to Laruns.

Fantastic bar apart the peak hours

Whether lunchtime or evening, this restaurant provides interesting, freshly prepared food and excellent prices. The menu du jour is excellent value but co is the A la carte.
Whether you eat outside or inside the service is friendly and efficient. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Great value, super service

Husband and wife work together to make a nice experience. Very new owners. The meals were excellent. Rooms clean. View spectacular on the river. Highly recommend as long as you are ok to be a bit out of the town. 

Worth staying for awhile. This is a beautiful setting on the river. 

This Auberge is a welcome sight after driving on a beautiful winding road for miles through stupendous scenery but sad to say it is a little basic although the welcome is friendly.   I think they must concentrate on winter visitors for skiing etc as there are no carpets- just Lino or wooden floors and it is all rather plain.
There is a large outside terrace area overlooking the ravine and the fast flowing river rushing down to the grand spa hotel close by, the village is very quiet and charming.
There is a friendly ground floor bar and reception area but the dining room is in a rather strange, green ceramic tiled basement room with no outlook - the only decoration being 3 large wood carvings - a Red Indian, a bear and an eagle.
Dinner was forgettable and so was breakfast being self service and nothing cooked.
However there was a highlight!  I was lucky enough to be woken by sheep bells as about 1,000 sheep were driven down the only street from the mountains to the lowlands before winter set in.
Given the choice again I would drive a little further north into Laruns where there is a choice of hotels, eateries and bars set round the charming village square in sight of the magnificent mountains.

Stunning Ravine

Loved this quaint french hotel. It is nestled in the mountains, next door to a tiny village. Very pleasant staff. A cafe and restaurant in-home with very pleasant service. The room is small, but great views. Slightly dark, but again the view and charming decor makes up for it. Clean, simple and small. Thank you to the wonderful staff for making us feel welcomed! (tho, limited english)

Beautiful!

We were staying one night in Eaux Chaudes whilst looking for property and lucked out with the Auberge la Caverne.  It was the only place open as it was off season, but the hosts were so nice and friendly it made us feel wonderfully comfortable.  We arrived in the lashing rain in the evening so the village was deserted and felt a little like a ghost town.  The rooms were basic, but clean and tidy, with a fantastic view over the gorge.  We had dinner in the bar which was lovely (Amazing soup by the way!).  After a good nights sleep we awoke to the sunshine and the sound of the river below.  It was idilic. Again we were met with smiles and enthusiasm, and a very nice breakfast with fresh squeezed OJ.  'What a difference a day makes.'  The village looked spectacular in the sun, and the mountain views were breathtaking.  I would definitely recommend the Auberge La Caverne, and would stay there again if we were passing by.
