Disappointed

These gardens are in themselves not particularly remarkable (especially as we visited during a drought) but the combination of the historic buildings and sheltered valley setting give them a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. Take time to set and watch the ornamental chickens peck amongst the huge ancient tithe barn and Normande timbered cottages.

Tranquility

The prieure consists of old buildings in a separate park 6 km from nearest restaurants and shops.
The rooms offer a 16th century  atmosphere, nice breakfast and possibilities to buy local products.

The really serious disadvantage is that the owners two dogs goes free  and they dislike visitors. The big one bite me hard on my thigh
on the premises!! 
Do not think of bringing children to this hotel!!

It was wonderful to stay at Prieure St Michel again. This place has beautiful grounds, tranquil surroundings and welcoming hosts. It is a real haven away from the world. We would love to return. Thank you for your hospitality. 

A Beautiful Place to Stay

If travel is all about having unique experiences and accessing accommodation that is unlike any other then Le Prieure Saint-Michel is the place to stay. The Priory dates from the 13th century, and the many buildings are lovingly maintained by Jean-Pierre and his wife Viviane, aided by their two delightful dogs.The priory is embedded in the most beautiful gardens which are tended to every morning by Jean-Pierre and Viviane. Jean-Pierre was most accessible and accommodating for any needs, and it was wonderful to have the free use of a laundry and drier. The property is steeped in history, with a various collection of  half timbered houses, including a barn, a chapel and the breakfast room which contains a 15th century cider press. It is a most serene place to stay and it was a memorable experience to eat our lunch which we had purchased at the markets in the garden. Jean-Pierre cooked a lovely dinner for us one night. The room was spacious. The Pays d'Auge region is a delightful area of rolling green hills with apple orchards and gorgeous cows lolling in the verdant fields and little laneways that were like driving through tunnels of green. One needs to have a car for this property. Our room didn't have wifi but we could access it in the breakfast room.....but hey.....this place isn't about technology, its about experiencing a unique, historical place in a peaceful oasis.

A Unique Historical Accommodation in an Idyllic Garden

The “Lilac Room” we booked at this living museum is undoubtedly one of the two most memorable places we have stayed in any of our travels.  The Prieure dates back to the 13th century, as do beams supporting the ceiling in our room, which is exceptionally spacious since in it once slept a number of priests.  Three walls are covered in a muted fabric which appears likely to be a historic pattern.  Remaining surfaces are the original stone, several feet thick.  The low door (folks were a lot shorter 800 years ago) is curved at the top and has a little opening window with shutters when privacy is wanted.  Like most houses in France, all windows have shutters, not shades.  Oriental rugs cover the tile and stone floors.  The bathroom is completely modern, including a bidet, and has the best reading light over the “necessary” that I’ve ever encountered.  

Breakfast in the Cider Press Barn is complete and tasty and the huge, circular stone cider press wheel and trough which was once powered by a horse commands the center of the room—an amazing sight.  Wi-fi is available in this room, but does not extend to the adjacent two accommodations due to the thick stone walls. 

This is a living museum, surrounded by extensive and very beautiful gardens and lovingly cared for and presented to you by owner Jean-Pierre, who speaks English well (thankfully for me) and his wife who could speak with my wife who does speak French.  Since we are living in France for a year we plan to return at the earliest opportunity.

For those who are looking for a tranquil place to relax away from the internet and all, then this is the place to come and unwind. Jan-Pierre and Vivienne have a delightful retreat that ensures you have a great time of unwinding in beautiful gardens or even sitting by the duck pond just losing yourself. This is one of many times we have been and will continue to some back. Thank you Jan-Pierre you have a gem worth treasuring.

A true retreat in the heart of Normandy

Jean-Pierre and his family keep this amazingly beautiful former Priory farm as a luxurious and peaceful haven in the middle of ravishing Normandy countryside. They were friendly and welcoming and in spite of having hosted a huge wedding over the weekend were generous in their attentions to us as their Monday night visitors. The room was huge, beautifully furnished with stylish bathroom and probably the oldest building we have ever slept in. Breakfast in the former cider press ( where wifi connection works) was lovely. We are planning to visit again.
