I am reviewing the restaurant at A Pignata, where we had an excellent lunch.

From where we were staying a journey of 1h15 on windy and uneven roads felt like a long one. But it was worth it. 

A Pignata has a covered outdoor restaurant area with wide and outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. Booking is essential, as is knowing that what you’ll get is a fixed price menu with five courses of Corsican cooking. There is virtually no choice, but I question whether you’d need it unless you’re vegetarian…in which case choose a different restaurant.

For the first course there was an alternative, Butternut squash soup or the charcuterie. The helpful chap in charge suggested that we have two bowls for one portion of soup then we could share the charcuterie, and sample both. The soup was excellent, and the home made charcuterie the best I’ve had.

For the next course again an alternative. Each ‘main’ was accompanied by cheese filled cannelloni, and haricot beans in a sauce that contained meat. The alternative mains were 7 hour slow cooked lamb shank, or what I can best describe as a savoury meatloaf in a rich mushroom sauce. We ordered one of each of the mains and shared. All delicious, and copious in quantity. 

Next was cheese and fruit. Local goats and sheep’s cheese, as much as you want, and a fruit basket to accompany. Next doughnuts with grappa. Tear with your fingers, soak in grappa, and just enjoy! Then finally coffee.

I can see why the have rooms here, you would naturally want to lie down after all that.

At 60 Euro a head this was exceptional value. All the dishes are made from produce grown on the farm, and all are beautifully cooked.

Corsican home cooking - be guided by A Pignata

Under no circumstances stay here. This story needs hearing so strap in - after having booked this place especially for my 50th birthday we arrived with a gift of a bottle of red wine to drink with our dinner. We asked the waitress if we could drink this and she referred to the "owner" who approached us in, let's say an "unfriendly" manner.

When explaining that we had come to his establishment especially and that we would be unable to to take the wine home to England the following day his response after an interchange was that we "could leave now". Remember, this is a place in the mountains, it was 8pm and we had had a couple of glasses of wine. His waitress was extremely embarassed and so we let it go with regards to the wine. Bear in mind that we in fact had offered to pay a corkage fee the equivalent to a full bottle of his house wine so we could drink our gift. No matter in this guys mind - his "policy" was no outside wine...

Such was the attitude of this guy was that he (a) didn't care that he ruined what should have been a momentous evening with my wife, (b) was prepared to have us drive off without accommodation on said day late in the eve and (c) illustrated the hardest of hearts and an attitude not conducive to running a hostelry I would posit. This latter point is what should perturb and warn other guests staying here.

Customer service at absolute worst. Avoid at all costs

If you want to spend a few days in Alta Rocca and want great food and a place hidden from the rest of the world, then this is for you. This old farm has been transformed in a great hotel and restaurant. The food is very good and very copious. You can eat outside watching the mountains. And it is super quiet.

A place away from the world

Great place to relax in Alta Rocca. Views are fantastic and Everything is high quality: lodging, food and services: heated salt pool, hammam, massage if desired.
Most guests come under a « Demi pension » plan which includes dinner and breakfast. Dinner in a typical Corsican style is great and plentiful as well with most products supplied from the attached farm.

Superb hotel/restaurant in Alta Rocca

Strongly recommended if you're visiting the Alta Roca (and you should) in Corsica. a 3 star hotel which could deserve an extra star for its gorgeous rural views, the rustic-chic deco and its young and attentive staff. Our booking came with a dinner, better be hungry as the chef is very generous. Earthy, meaty (as is Corsican cuisine) but delightful dinner with a view.

This hotel and restaurant is nestled in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt regions of Corsica and is well and truly off the beaten track. However once you arrive you are immediately welcomed as part of this beautiful home in the hills.
Homemade lemon wine to began i night i really won't ever forget.
I had the pleasure of living in Corsica for 6 months this summer and the Service, Food and Wine served at A Pignata really was the highlight of it.
We were hosted by Julie, a knowledgable, charming and efficient member of the team who spoke effortlessly in both French and English to different members of our party.
Nestled in a private dining snug we were told by Julie what she was going to serve that evening, that she was aware of all our dietary requirements and then the perfect wine to go along with it.
The freedom of being told what was being served rather than a menu added to the homely ambience emanating from the interior styling.
First, some of the best local charcuterie was served as a platter, to begin with, followed by steaming crockpots and casserole dishes. Our table overflowed with fantastic rustic corsican flavours and i can confidently say i enjoyed the best meal of my time in Corsica.

Julie indulged us with our chats about interesting Corse cheeses and served us digestifs to settle our meal, she was an absolute pleasure to be hosted by and really does justice to a beautiful place, a beautiful hotel and beautiful food.

A triumph of Corsica

A delightful location, beautifully designed outside and in, great staff, lovely food. Exactly what you hope for! Choose a higher quality room if you can. Get there early and make use of the superb pool plus riding. Endless walks all around as well as close enough to the Mare-Mare Sud path. The owner kindly gave us a lift into Levie the next morning.

Simply Excellent

As a travel writer I have been fortunate to visit some superb locations and eat in exceptional restaurants. This week I was in Corsica, and overnighted at Auberge A Pignata, 4km from the mountain village of Levie. The family guesthouse has an indoor pool and spa, and spacious, elegant rooms. The evening meal was exceptional. In front of a roaring log fire, I enjoyed some of the best home-cooked food I have sampled for quite some time. Family run, the staff were extremely pleasant and welcoming, the service top-notch. With its own kitchen garden and pigs, just about everything is locally sourced. It is one place that I shall most definitely return to in the future. Little wonder that it is listed in The World's Finest Hotel and Cruise Collection.

Exceptional stay and superb cuisine

Recently we stayed for 3 nights at A Pignata, a boutique hotel in the rural setting of the Alta Rocca area. The hotel presents itself as a luxury 'ferme et auberge', but you will experience very little of the farm. It's more a boutique hotel, but we really missed some important essentials, like airconditioning in the room (also no normal ventilation possibilities during the night without letting the sliding door open, which is a very easy way for uninvited visitors to enter your room). Also the chairs on the patio were impossible to sit on if you care for your lower back, no mini fridge in the room to keep your drinks and water cool, no lace curtains for the sliding door for privacy, the mirror in the bathroom was hanging to low so your could not see your own face, room key was to big so you could not keep it in your pocket, etc. Overall the rooms were dated. And then about the famous food and restaurant of A Pignata: you really must be a big fan of Corsican farm food to enjoy the dishes served. Especially because you have no choice in dishes. The restaurant decides for you what you will eat for dinner. In our taste the food is not refined enough. It's too rough and basic, with very simple ingredients and average taste. Three nights on a row was to much in our opinion. Overall we think A Pignata is overrated and should consider to put the wishes en needs of the guests before the 'formula' of being a special farm treat in the Alta Rocca.

Good, but overrated

One regret is that we did not spend the night here after our evening meal. Partly because we were so full, we wished we could go straight to bed but also the hotel was beautiful. High up, great views and almost like a retreat. They have a tasting menu that you get where you pick a few preferences. The food was delicious and the wine was great too. The highlight was the lamb we had that just fell off the bone. The restaurant had a very rustic feel with the log fireplace and their artwork and crockery. Great meal!
