We have been travelling through Europe whilst on a sabbatical from our work in Australia. 

Rarely do we find a welcome as welcoming as the one we had here, with Chris. 

The two days we spent here were not quite enough. A small village a short drive from St Remy de Provence. Once you have done your sightseeing return to the haven of this bed and breakfast, and have a cooling dip in the swimming pool. 

The breakfast was amazing and a little too much food. 😃

There is also a fridge in the courtyard that works on an honesty policy. It is great to be able to go and get a beer whenever you want, and pay later. 

I highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

Coming from Spain and going home to Italy we decided to stop for 2 nights at this Mas., which I booked by Booking .com . 

The Mas is in the  small and very quiet  village of  Maillane  at about 7 kms from  the more famous and crowed  Saint Remy de Provence , but we liked the choice .

 The check in was at 3 but we arrived earlier and so we called  Chris ,the owner , who was not in and he was very kind and gave us the code number to enter the Mas and then he arrived after a few minutes. Chris was  a lovely guy who gave us suggestions about where to eat  ( we had dinner In 2 very good restaurants ) and what to see . 

We must say that reaching it was not easy ,  and  when we finally found the  small street with no exit where the Mas is  , the  impression was not so  good . But once we entered the gate, a bright and nice garden with shadowy  trees , a swimming pool , deckchairs , tables and  lots of beautiful  furnishing welcomed us , in a pleasant atmosphere . 

We had booked a superior room which  actually was quite small  , with a French bed , so again also quite small  too , but I must say that the linens and the embroiled cotton blanket and pillows were very nice and very “ French”

The bathroom on the contrary was of a good size, especially the shower  and both the room and the bathroom were very clean.

Breakast was  amazing : the first day we had it inside because of the strong Mistral , but the day after it was in the garden . Chris prepared a lot of food : yogurt , fresh fruits , hams ,  tomatoes of different types and colours, cheeses , jams,  hot bread , toast with ham and cheese , croissants  fruit juice , and more  and everything was served with good taste .

In the garden there was also a fridge filled with bottles of water , wines, beers, soft drinks which are available for the guests free of charge . 

So if you like  a busy atmosphere ,  streets  crowded with people , lots of shops and bars , restaurants , Maillane is not for you. 

But if you like a quite place,  privacy , and lovely ambiance   Mas a L’improviste is the right place .

Quiet and Lovely

We were there for 2 days. The old house is located in a peaceful place and offers all what you need to visit the Alpilles region. Swimming pool, nice outside place to rest, huge breakfast, two good restaurants in the village and the hosts were very kind. You could feel as you were in your friends’ house. Must stop Mas

We researched a new area near Baux de Provence to relax for a few days and accepted an offer to stay in Maillane - a sleepy village with a very beautiful and pleasant restaurant as well as a bistro, 5 minutes walk away from the Mas a l'Improviste. We trusted the reviews we saw and did ignore the two or three very negative ones.

I did not pay much attention to the promised yet non-existing parking, nor to the flaky wifi that kept on trying to put me on roaming costs during the entire stay. I also did not think much about a constant chatter in the garden that evening, thinking that people were simply having fun and not paying attention to the content of the conversation.
We also set an expectation for a family friendly Mas as the advertisement said: "Children are most welcome."

The owner(s?) were quick to accommodate us the first evening and orient us to a good restaurant nearby.

The next morning, the experience started going down the drain, and I started feeling like a participant in a "Friday the Thirteenth" horror movie, unfolding before my eyes. 

Neighbours did not like that the owners parked in front of their houses, diminishing our breakfast experience. The breakfast was exquisite, yet it does get stressful when the neighbour is shouting. Plus, breakfast is not available before 09:00, which I find highly unconventional. 

The rooms were cleaned so well, that I thought someone was borderline anal. I had to go and find my toothbrush orderly put into a drawer as if the beauty of the place was more important than my privacy. The hotel does stink of the dogs the owners keep.

My kids were clearly not welcome that afternoon, playing and, yes, at times, shouting in the pool at 16:00, as alive kids do. The owner seemed to be hung over from the night before, stank of cigarettes and was clearly unhappy that my kids were taking a plunge.

I overheard the next morning while sipping my coffee how there was an entire conversation with other guests behind my back on these details.

My wife was not treated correctly as a person when she tried to pay (forced to pay in cash). With the amounts that Frederic demands (I don't care if it is a deal or not), you need to accept debit or credit cards. And Issue invoices! And clearly, declare the extra amounts before making up numbers that are not verifiable. Your attempt to humiliate my wife, suggest to put a knife in the kids' swimming aids, comparing dogs to children, and throwing cash on the floor is not acceptable. It's the behavior of a small child, not that of a professional B&B owner.

Jung and Freud would have had a blast to diagnose why so many empty bird cages are littering the decoration of the Mas.

If you are a family, stay away. If you are a couple and don't want to experience an owner talking about other guests, about you, stay away.

Great effort to create a high standard, yet the experience seriously fails for Families

We spent 4 nights at Mas a L'Improviste. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel welcome. The room was spacious and comfortable and breakfast was excellent (meat, cheese, croissants, bread, pastry, yogurt, fresh fruit, eggs, juice, coffee...). Frederic and Chris were great hosts... They remembered our preferences for breakfast, were very helpful, friendly and gave us good recommendations.  On our first evening we had a glass of rose in the courtyard by the pool with other guests, Frederic and Chris.  It was fun. It was also easy to meet the other guests (though it is not mandatory to do so.)

The grounds/garden are very nice and the place is clean and extremely well maintained. Maillane is a great (albeit quiet) town with easy access to the region.  We had an excellent experience and I would recommend it to anyone. 

Really wonderful place to stay!

This outstanding B&B has proved to be everything we dreamed of and beyond. Chris and Fred , the owners, were so friendly and helped us with tips about local markets and restaurants. The breakfast they serve in the garden is superb and the delightful decore of the rooms and house in general makes you want to stay there forever. The village itself is very small, but St. Remy is only 5km away and there are many other gems within easy commute distance.

The true charm of Provence

We were fortunate to spend 2 nights here earlier this month.  You are greeted with a glass of beautiful Rose.  Beautifully decorated and incredible attention to detail.  All the furniture and decorations are handpicked by the owner and it shows. 
By the pool is gorgeous and could easily have hung out there all day.  The owners are lovely and went over andy beyond what was expected - including making a Dr's appointment for me and taking me there. They also booked dinner for us both nights and they were wonderful restaurants. 
A highlight of this gorgeous little place is the Breakfast.  It is incredible.  Definitely the best food we had in France.  From the beautiful pastries and fruit to the delicious selection of meats and cheeses.  We didn't need lunch on the days we ate breakfast here.
Another highlight were the owners beautiful dogs which our boys absolutely adored.
The location is great as it is such a quiet village yet a very short drive to St Remy or Eygalieres.
The hosts Chris and Frederic definitely help make this stay wonderful.  We will definitely be back.  Highly recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere special.
