Came in to watch world cup final… what a lovely bar, great beer, such friendly staff really working hard to make the evening great.. outside and inside fires.. cracking venue, and on the slopes

Think it’s the old mark Warner hotel refurbished…

Superb Hotel and Bar on the slopes

And I’m not referring to the skiing.  As a die hard Mark Warner fan of many years, it’s such a shame to see such a fall in standards - and sadly Hotel Tarantaise is a symbol of what I fear may be their demise.  Let’s start with the positives!  For skiers rather than party animals the location is a huge plus - it’s very definitely ski in ski out.  Only a few bars and restaurants close by but all very good.  The lounge and bar area are cozy and welcoming with a lovely log fire - though not enough seating for everyone.  The quality of food at dinner was excellent - they even accommodated my requests for lightly cooked fish! Something that Mark Warner has always done better than anyone is hire good staff.  Everyone we came across was pleasant and helpful - maybe the well brought up sons and daughters of Mark Warner’s ageing clientele from Its hey day! 
- [ ] Sadly it all stopped there. The hotel is definitely need of a major upgrade. Although a decent size with plenty of storage and a bath - our room had a small double bed with a mattress so soft we constantly rolled together in the middle all the time.  Every time we opened the door to cool down the room the radiator came on.  The water pressure was very poor.  As for the Wi-fi - very hit and miss with a very weak signal.  Every night we and several other guests were kept awake until the early hours by what sounded like scraping furniture across the floor somewhere nearby.  I never used to bother taking my own tea to a Mark Warner hotel as they could always be relied upon to provide decent tea - not so any more so if you’re a tea drinker pack your own tea bags.  Afternoon tea soup and cakes were mostly delicious - but gone are the days of lots of choice for afternoon tea, as is the ice cream selection for dessert at dinner.  And don’t get me started on the wine - there’s certainly plenty of it but as for the quality - let’s just say I resorted to buying a glass from the bar.
- [ ] All that being said - we did have a wonderful holiday.  I just hope Mark Warner gets its act together and brings back some of the customer service focus and stops these niggly little cost cutting measures as it would be so sad to see it go. Here’s looking forward to a good night sleep!

A slippery slope for Mark Warner!

We enjoyed our trip to the Hotel Tarentaise but there are a number of issues that came up, which we tried to sort at the time, but were not really solved. 
Fire safety issues, a noisy room and a treacherous drive marred our stay in what is generally a medium standard hotel!

The main one was the fact that the drive leading to the hotel was a sheet of ice and treacherous and for a beginner skiier (such as myself) negotiating this to the bus stop wearing ski boots and carrying poles and skis, to go for skiing lessons in the mornings was a nightmare. If you are able to ski down to Meribel then this is not an issue (unless you want to go out at night).
 
Our room was on the top floor next to a boiler room (or something) and we were woken up every morning at 6am by a large bang and then it droned and vibrated all day and well into the night! This was annoying and this room should definitely not have been in use. It was tatty and the furniture was outdated!  No work had been done on the hotel to make it look nice and we were there at the beginning of the season.

There were fire alarms on our first two nights but we noticed that the fire exit next to our room was not in use! This could be dangerous if there was a real fire!

On a positive note the staff were lovely and the afternoon cake in particular, was fantastic, as was the roaring fire in the lounge/bar area.

The food was OK, better on some nights than others but edible. The breakfast was too late for me as i had to get to the bus stop so I can't comment on the cooked items. On the one morning I did have breakfast I thought it was disappointing with some horrid sausages on offer with beans and tomatoes!

On my return I wrote to the customer services dept about my concerns re the drive and the fire safety and although I heard from Gordon Spence he basically didn't care about the fire safety or the slippery drive (which is an accident waiting to happen)!

On the whole this is a convenient Chalet if you are an intermediate skier and can negotiate a rather late breakfast at 8 to get to skiing lessons by 9.15 with a nice team of staff (albeit young and generally inexperienced - but then we were there the first week)

Given Mark Warner's lax attitude I would not book with them again and so as this is run by them I would be unlikely to return until I was assured that safety and proof that the boiler room was safe (e.g. no carbon monoxide leakage) was forthcoming.

However for an intermediate skier and a medium quality hotel experience this is a good choice.

Nice staff,  good location for an intermediate or above skiier but some safety issues!

Check your invoices, our room was downgraded between invoices and they now claim we were informed, not what you expect from a quality company. Total break down of trust with Mark Warner. 
When arrived we were told there were no other room options, as another customer said 'mis sold' as they had the same situation.
Lounge was shut during the day, two years ago you could ski in sit in the lounge and have a coffee break then ski out, no longer. They didn't want to lock the bar away to save time.The fire was lit whilst we tried to have afternoon tea which more often than not resulted in smoking out the room leaving the guests to open doors and leave the room.
Communication with head office has that "its your fault" approach to it but where do you go when you stand at the arrivals desk to be told sorry head office allocate the rooms and we are full, basically like it or lump it.
Hotel has gone from poor to run down, do not expect quality accommodation.

Sorry Mark Warner we have been on 6 of your holidays, another lost customer, think you have lost your touch and brand.

Down graded Room without notification

Right on the slopes but this chalet is looking very tired now.  Needs refurbishment, stayed here about 10 years ago and it's not changed since!  Rooms are perfectly comfortable but overpriced in my opinion.  Food very average.

Fantastic location, chalet needs some TLC

We had a great time on our holiday in Mottaret. We loved the location, the ski area and the service was mostly very good, especially from the customer service team on the front desk. 
The room was shabby but this is clear from photos of the hotel. The room was warm, the bed was comfortable and we slept well. 
Some negatives - 
The hotel is right on the slope, why wouldn’t you design it so the boot room opens onto the piste?? This is maybe less of a problem earlier in the season, or if you don’t have small children but climbing up a steep icy path each morning which melts into muddy slush by the afternoon is not fun. It was easier to get the bus back to the hotel which defeats the purpose of having a ski in hotel. 
The food. Breakfast and afternoon tea were fine but dinner was hit and miss, the vegetarian options were sometimes awful, bland, unseasoned and often barely touched. Peppers stuffed with soggy white stodge and sultanas?! The chef was inflexible. Our 6 year old is not fussy at all and luckily will eat foods most little kids won’t, but one day didn’t fancy anything on the menu, the waitress went to ask chef if there was a kids alternative, as there was some days, but chef just said no. So he got a smoked trout risotto, which he couldn’t eat - not exactly child friendly, and not good enough for a hotel that still claims to “welcome children”
We had a great meal at La Baleine Blanche just up the road from the hotel on the staff day off. Service and food was so good and such a contrast from the hotel meals. 
I’d definitely come back to Mottaret/Méribel but I don’t think this hotel is a good choice if you have young kids.

Ok if you can get a get a good deal but not great for kids

The Hotel Tarentaise is in a great location in Mottaret with direct access to the slopes.  The decor is tired and dated but our room was spacious and clean with lovely views of the mountain and the food and wine was of good quality and plentiful. The Mark Warner staff were all very helpful and polite. What's not to like?
We felt that they did the big things well but the small noticeable things badly.
DINING: dining room layout is chaotic and difficult to get around. Tea/coffee set-up is illogically laid out and teabags are cheap. Always missing plates/bowls/cutlery. Dirty cups. No children's drinks with dinner.
WAITERS: 'Have you finished?' while still eating. Crumbs on breakfast tables. Can't remember which wine you ordered (red or white!) or forget to bring wine.
BAR:E9.50 for a G&T, E2.50 for a packet of crisps so didn't bother.
ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE: Luggage delivered to wrong room. Not told when/where departure times would be announced.
SKI IN/OUT: Snowblower (in Alps!) was electric so path to slopes from boot room was not cleared. 
SkI HIRE/PASS: Mix up from head office but sorted on site.
MARK WARNER SOCIAL: non existent
SAUNA: Did not use as it's in a hallway next to the boot room. I can't imagine where you would undress. In the sauna?
SPA: Didn't use so can't comment but I imagine it would be very basic.
FRONT DESK: very helpful and cheerful staff

We had a superb holiday and would potentially return to the Tarentaise as the location is excellent. All the negatives were minor but the domino effect left us feeling that management was weak and certainly not an endorsement of the MW brand.

Mark Warner holiday without the Mark Warner touch

I stayed here with a group of friends in the third week of March 2019, there was 9 of us in total. 
The staff are helpful and friendly, the hotel was basic and outdated but adequate for what we needed. 
We had a package holiday with mark warner and included with this was breakfast, afternoon tea and evening meal. The food was very good and we were never hungry. Breakfast had a good selection of cereals, pastries, bread, fruit and cooked options. We always had a choice of three options for the evening meal, and the food was very nice.
Although a slight mix up did occur with drinks as fruit juice should have been available as a alternative to an alcoholic drink with the evening meal. But on the first night when we asked for it we were told we must go to the bar and get it ourselves and the restaurant staff couldn’t get it for us, which is slightly inconvenient when eating a meal as this is in a different room in the hotel.
One member of our group did go to the bar for juice and was charged €3 a glass!! Not great when it should have been included. I did enquire about this the next morning with reception and was then told it was included and should be brought to the table when asked for it so that was quite annoying.

Me and my parter had a large double room and there was plenty of storage for us and the beds were very comfy. However 3 people in our party also shared a large double as it does allow for 3 adults to stay and there was not enough storage for 3 people with all their ski gear.
The rooms do not have a TV which is something I thought would have been included, hair dryers  are also not provided in the rooms.

The major let down for this hotel is the bar area, we went into the bar one evening after our meal. 
The bar was very cold and the fire was not lit properly, this resulted in the whole room being filled with smoke and ash, after spending about 45minutes in there our clothes, hair, everything smelt very strongly of smoke. Very unpleasant.
The selection of drinks was very limited, the beer was flat, not very nice and the wine list had a total of 3 wines, red, rose and white. It really did let the hotel down as our group didn’t have anywhere to meet before / after meals in the hotel and we did go out in search of other bars. 

We did enjoy our stay in the hotel tarentaise, the staff were lovely but will not return due to the disappointing bar area.



Good Service

I have always stayed in relatively basic ski chalet accommodation and have had a room in eaves before, but room 22 at this hotel is completely inadequate. 

I could only stand at high end of the room. At the head end of the bed the roof was so close to my face that I could not sit up without hitting my head. The location of the bath and shower in the eaves also mean I could not stand in the shower so had to use the bath. Unfortunately the bath water runs brown. There is a tiny window where you can get a glimpse of the piste side view we would have had with the room next door.

Our friends in same part got a balcony room with full ceiling height and much bigger. 

Mark Warner do not change price for this room and do not guarantee which room you get. When complaining I was informed that the hotel had been visited by the head of customer service who this the room is fit for purpose. 

I would not travel with Mark Warner again. Ski world streets ahead. Look elsewhere.
