Restaurant here was great. Food was excellent and service good. The gentleman who looked after us was professional, friendly and made the meal perfect. 

Hotel was ok. From the outside a nice authentic feel of French rural hotel. But our room, decoration and feel all felt a little tired. Hotel needs to be renovated. Otherwise clean and efficient service.

Handy stop over

Room OK, Attitude of staff in Restaurant not good . Food in restaurant not good value, the chicken was old. When we decided to eat in the Brasserie section on the second evening, the reception was very poor as was the food.

This Hotel is best described in a previous revue as a "Tourist Trap "
There was a resident dog which barked frequently in the late evening.
On leaving, the receptionist stood at the counter with her hand out, waiting for the key ! ( We had paid in advance !)  Would not return.

We had to stop somewhere !

In summary we both agreed that this place reminded us of the hostel we stayed in on the Thailand-Cambodia border for a few dollars a night. If you wanted to be optimistic, you might just see some of the charm of the ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’ from the film of that name. However the reality with a place like this is that once you are there, you just want to leave (which we probably would have, had we not prepaid). It is a wonderful opportunity to experience a France road-trip as it once was, since other than a small, cheap flat-screen TV bolted to the wall around a decade ago there has clearly been no updating since the 1970s - towels and bedlinen included. Fusty smells, sounds of neighbours’ toilets and doors being closed. The room was just like a sixth-form college dorm I was boarded in in France decades ago. The next-door restaurant is extortionate - our most expensive, but most disappointing, meal all holiday.  The hotel is in the middle of nowhere so there are no other options - either take the brasserie menu for 12,50€ or drive into Troyes (25 minutes). Redeeming features - okay (large) pool, some semblance of value for money (80€ for a triple), and a huge car park - although they still offer lock-ups for 5€ per night. But these are not enough to sweeten the pill: at the very most this hotel only works as a place to rest your head in desperate circumstances.

As bad as the other reviews suggest, and we try to be balanced

After breaking down on the motorway, we made the mistake of telling the receptionist over the phone that we were DESPERATE. She then conveniently informed us that only the MOST EXPENSIVE room was available. 

But you’ve got to get up pretty early to fool me! We checked online and found a cheaper rate. Upon arrival at the DESERTED hotel reception, we were hastily told of a last minute cancellation... I think not! Every room key was visibly hanging up, not in use. Foiled again, MWAHAH! 

We rushed to the restaurant which was closing shortly after we arrived, ohh we were in for a treat... NOT! Axe lined walls and a silent spattering of five sorry diners greeted us before the (smiley) waiter appeared and asked us our room number - NOW WE COULDN’T LEAVE!

The menu was as terrifying as the decor. We opted for an omelette over the head of a baby cow, comme si, comme ça! Not sure where they imported the eggs from as TWO OMELETTES with chips came to €34!! No wonder the waiter was smiling! 

Now to the room. The bathroom was nice. This was lucky, as we needed to wash a swarm of DEAD FLIES off ourselves in the morning. It was stiflingly hot too, which led to an unnerving sense that we might have actually been in HELL. The bats outside constantly setting off the security light made for an unwelcome light show, making up for the lack of entertainment (closed pool, dilapidated, overpriced mini-golf). 

Would recommend breaking down literally ANYWHERE ELSE, anywhere but Menilot. Don’t break down here, it’ll just break the bank, break your heart and as The Script once said, ‘When a heart breaks no it don’t break even’. 



Stranded motorway breakdown turns into living hell

We were driving back from the Alps to Calais and wanted to stay for one night. We used a booking site to choose a hotel with a pool. When we checked in to the hotel we were told that the pool was shut until April! On checking the confirmation email this was in the mail, but reasonably well hidden - and of course it was too late by this time to start thinking of finding somewhere else.

The hotel was big and dark. We had to wait at reception to check in and when we checked out there was no-one about at all.

We had a meal which was ok but expensive. Rooms were clean and ok; we had a family room.

There was nothing wrong with the hotel, but equally I wouldn't go out of my way to stay there again. Sorry.

Did what it said

Looks great from the outside, the room I was in disappointed, very tired. I don’t mind this kind of place for €30-€40, but this was €70. Beds were comfortable with 1980s bright orange/yellow covers, needed renewing as did the bathroom set. 

A bit of new silicone would be nice.
