Came here with friends and kids for new year's Day lunch. Very reasonably priced set menu of four courses. All in all, food was excellent,very well prepared.we especially liked the foie gras duo and the prawn starters, but all the dishes were good. The restaurant is a little dated and the menu is a little old-fashioned and rich, but that didn't stop us from enjoying our food. They had a nice kids menu too. Unfortunately no baby changing unit (that we could find). 

Great food but a little dated

We had dinner at Le Cheval Blanch while we were staying at the Chateau Etoges.  We were looking for a not too fancy meal but still a good meal and they did not disappoint!  The service was fantastic from the little amuse bouche to the plate of treats at the end.  This restaurant is not fancy, however don't let looks deceive you.  We had a 7:45 reservation and the place was booked solid the entire time we were there.

Great find for supper

We stayed at Le Cheval Blanc for 1 night. The rooms are simple but have everything one needs Our room was quiet being located at the back of the hotel. It had 2 comfortable double beds. The bathroon was small but the shower was good and everything was  spotlessly clean. Note that access to the bedrooms is via a fairly narrow staircase.

Breakfast was excellent with a huge choice of fruit, pastries, cold meats, juices and cheeses. The coffee was excellent being freshly made.At 7.50 euros it was a bargain.

Good value for money

We stayed at cheval blanc on our way back to Calais the host was lovely and very accommodating.The reception and bar are lovely ,decorated in a traditional 1800's French style so I was expecting this from the bedrooms but what a disappointment laminate flooring everywhere and the room was definitely in need of updating damp on the walls and  the pillows where so badly stained we couldn't sleep on them! Room very noisy from the kitchen extractor fan!
The food was excellent I had the set menu ,salad with walnuts and parmesan to start followed by shark steak in pink champagne sauce.there was a huge choice of wines and champagne!

Great food!

We dined at Le Cheval Blanc whilst staying a few days at nearby Etoges.  Upon entering the restaurant we were surprised by both the enormity of the dining room and that we were the only diners in sight.  The décor is tired and the restaurant feels like it needs to be brought out of the 1970's.

The owner/waitress was friendly and helpful.  We commenced with an Amuse Bouche of Mushroom soup which was absolutely superb.  Our entrees of terrine and escargot were typical bistro fare - simple and tasty.  The main courses were a mixed bag with my wife's rare steak coming out perfectly whilst my fillet mignon ordered medium rare was completely overcooked.  

Overall, we enjoyed our evening at Le Cheval Blanc and would recommend it to anyone travelling in this part of Champagne.
 

Enjoyable Country Cuisine

I wanted to stay at L'Auberge Angleterre in Chalons en Champagne but it was full, and after several desperate calls I found this place in a small village in the middle of nowhere. It is quiet, and homely and the Bed plus Breakfast is cheap for the region. 

The evening meal was truly excellent and the selection of wines plus champagne also was good. 

Highly recommended for a stopover. It is not luxurious just very clean, nice people and excellent food ... They insisted that I locked up the car in their guarded parking area...looked safe as a consequence but I would be surprised if they have many breaking as it is really in the middle of nowhere!
