The venue is nice, the view spectacular. After a 10 k walk we were really looking forward to eat a good lunch. And this was recommended to us. 

Well, the food was absolutely tasteless and we were completely surrounded by flies. It was horrible. Awful. 

Awful with all the flies. 

The final drive up to the auberge was next to impossible - we parked down the hill in the end.  The welcome from the owner was non-existent.  The room felt more like a hostel room as it was clean but basic - no toiletries, tv, or fridge.  The evening meal offered little choice and there was no effort made to help us access the menu.  No wine menu was forthcoming until asked for.  This lack of effort contrasted noticeably with the interactions made by the owner with other customers in the restaurant - and in hindsight it is interesting to note that almost all the good reviews are written in French.  The auberge was suffering from a fly problem - so the breakfast buffet was somewhat flyblown - including one fly in our bowl of honey.  Overall a very disappointing stay in a beautiful valley.

Leave this auberge to the French

We feel a little guilty at being the first people not to give full marks to the Auberge du Clot, but we feel justified. First, we have to agree that the building, the bedrooms etc. are excellent and clean, plus the landscape context is wonderful. The staff are also pleasant and professional. However, the meal on our first night was quite strange – an excellent mushroom soup, followed by tourtons du Champsaur (small pastries stuffed with cheese), plus a steak – these products were all of good quality, however, there were no vegetables or salad – extremely unusual in France. For a place that prides itself on using local products, and is part of an area where cheese is made, what was all the more surprising was the absence of a cheese course – it is rare not have cheese anywhere in France after the main course, especially in the Alps. The meal on the second night was better and more balanced and did include a great soup made from wild spinach from around the building. Breakfast was okay. 
What really disappointed us was the price – between 15 and 20 euro more expensive (per person/per night) than similar places in the region. We know the area extremely well as tourists, and also due to our profession. For the price paid at the Auberge du Clot, we might also expect the following items (normally present in cheaper, equivalent establishments) – more than one water-glass, plus shower gel in the bedroom. In fact, the place where we stayed the next day (15 euro cheaper per person/per night) offered an aperitif, an excellent well-balanced meal, including salad and cheese – plus, there was shower gel...:)

Beautiful setting, slightly over-priced

This is a comfortable traditionally styled but modern farm building a few minutes walk from the upper Nevache village. We had the ground floor room, which was a cosy double, wood panelled, with a view towards the sunrise. I think this was the 'accessible' room - wide doors and a wet-room bathroom. All nicely decorated and well insulated (sound as well as heat).  Dinners were a real treat, with imaginative use of local produce, including their own trout and genepi. 
This is an ideal base for exploring one of the most beautiful valleys in the region. There are great mountain hikes possible directly from the village, and even wider choice of routes from just a few kilometres along the road. Our stay coincided with an early autumn snowfall; magical walking, and a welcome log stove at the end of the day.
