La Maison de Sophie

We spent one enjoyable night at this interesting guest house/hotel. I suspect it may be one of those "marmite" places that either appeals or it doesn't. For us, there was a lot to like. The building dates from 1907 and is an excellent example of the architecture of the period retaining many of the original fittings and fixtures. There is a walled garden on two sides of the house with a small outdoor pool and what may have been the original coach house as a separate structure. I understand they have nine rooms. It is lovely and could easily pass for an authentic prop in a fin de siecle style movie. The bedroom was a good size (with high ceiling) and comfortable bed. The large en suite had a cast iron roll top bath (bliss!) and a hand shower. Breakfast comprised bread, pastries, fruit, yoghurt, coffee etc served on beautiful plates and cutlery redolent of the period of the house - a very nice touch. The proprietor and his wife (Sophie) were charming, helpful and welcoming. What is on offer here is essentially bed and breakfast with no frills. If you are looking for modern chic with fancy showers, in room coffee and extra services etc this place is not for you. If you want to pretend that you have just stepped into a Flaubert novel you will probably love it (as we did). We will return.
