We arrived at a locked gate to the Manor at 3:30pm, using the buzzer and phone number we couldn't make contact with the hotel. So we had to phone our booking agent to contact them on our behalf - it turned out check wasn't until 5pm and no access could be gained to the property until then. Upon returning at 5:30pm we were again confronted with the locked gate, second time of trying the buzzer and phoning. Second time of no response and again we contacted our booking agent, who eventually got us in! Not the welcoming start you expect to a stay. 

Our room was quirky, clean and had a very comfortable bed. The location was good, within walking distance of the town. Although returning from dinner all the lights in the building were out at 9:30pm and we had to use mobile phone light to let ourselves in and go upstairs to our room - perhaps lights on a timer might be a good idea!

Breakfast was excellent.

I think the 'icing on the cake' was when we went to leave - we had handed in our keys and fob to the gate and were told we would be let out of the gate. It took 15 mins for the gate to be opened for us to get out!! 

Fair

We spent there at the suite room on Friday night and Saturday night.
Each morning, Roosters screaming at 4 o'clock am the whole morning!
The private owner of this hotel owns 5 Roosters. 
It was obvious he doesn't care about guests get good sleep or not.
Both of two days, we could not sleep well because of that.
We told the owner about it on the first morning.
But the owner even did not say SORRY or anything.
He just said he knows about it......
We realized that we made the wrong choice of picking up this hotel.
Inside hotel is very old but sadly there was not well maintained. 
The bathroom had a big water leak stain on the ceiling.
After bed-making, the maid did not change the used coffee cups. She had left new coffee powder and tea bags next to the used coffee cups without wash to clean used coffee cups.
I believe this is the style of this hotel...I guess.
And they don't speak English at all I believe.
The nightstand was broken but did not fix it.
When I tried to turn on the light, the nightstand neck was fallen dawn.
This hotel was supposed NON-smoking hotel but when we enter our suite room, the room smell full of smoking smell.
The old mansion has to be well maintained in order to make money from the guests.

Do I recommend this place to other people?
Absolutely NOT!

COULDN"T SLEEP WELL!! 4 o'clock in the morning 5 Roosters started to screaming every morning!

From the moment my husband and i arrived at the hotel, we noticed that something was not right. When we arrived, we were welcomed coldly, as if were were not meant to be there at all. We then were shown to our room, but it was not the room we had booked. When we asked about this, we were told rudely that we could "go and find another place to stay, and we would get a full refund". This was not at all polite or considerate, considering that my husband and I had travelled from London, and that i was pregnant and therefore just wanted to rest. Even if we wanted, it was late in the day to find another place to stay. We, of course accepted the room, but then finally asked if there were any vegetarian options for breakfast, as my husband doesn't eat meat. Shockingly , we were told in an aggressive tone that the hotel was not a "5* hotel", and they would not "be serving couscous for breakfast". [for reference, couscous is commonly referred to as a meal served in Morocco, Algeria areas, and is seen as a 'foreign and muslim' meat-based meal]. All we wanted was some reassurance that there could be an alternative to charcuterie for breakfast, but the comment from the owner was clear racist undertones given that my husband is of asian heritage and wears a white turban, which was mistaken for traditional muslim attire.

This type of treatment is not something that anyone, regardless of their background or faith, should experience. This is unacceptable in the 21st century.

Racist comment and attitude  by owner ruined our stay

Lovely room, large & warm lovely quality bedding, Wouldnt change a thing, Cant wait to return :) Friendly Hosts (was given an upgrade) Breakfast far better than most & Gluten Free bread found for me. Even tea & Madelines in the room :)

Beautiful Manoir will return

It is nicely renovated Manoir a few minutes walk from the beach at Cabourg. We stayed in the Rose room which was a very pleasant room with a large bathroom. There is a kettle in the room and tea bags and coffee (no milk).  Also good, free WiFi. 

The breakfast is served from 8.30 in the dining room. Lovely fresh croissants, bread, cold meats, boiled eggs and tea or coffee. 

The Manoir is on a main road but we didn’t find the traffic noise a problem even with the window open. We heard more noise from a neighbouring cockerel!  There are pretty gardens to sit in. 

When you arrive you need to use the intercom at the gates to ask for them to be opened. You then have a key to open and close the gate during your stay. 

The owner, Eric, was charming and helpful. He spoke very good English and had no problem with us arriving early, and leaving our suitcases. 

The only small problem could be, this is an old house so there are no lifts. There are stone steps to the front door and there were a further 41 steps to our room which was on the second floor.   We didn’t find it a problem but it might not be ideal for some people. 

As we were leaving we mentioned that there wasn’t a fridge in the room (which would’ve been useful for milk or cold drinks). They said we could have used the one in the kitchen if we had asked. Worth knowing. 

Attractive French Manoir

Nice people, nice "French style" breakfast and good location. Cabourg beach is within walking distance, the centre of Carbourg just 5 minute drive where you will find a nice precinct and a market on Tuesday's. Parking on Manoir grounds and free wi fi.

One word of caution. If you struggle with stairs the Manoir is not suitable. It is a lovely old Manoir, which Eric and his partner have restored and continue to improve, so don't expect lifts (elevators) and swanky options

Nice old Manour

As another reviewer mentioned, met with locked/automatic gates, but once the proprietor aware of our arrival gates swung open and we were met by a very helpful and friendly man who spoke excellent English. The room was huge and clean if a little quirky! We stayed in the Out of Africa suite and yes, the 'fur' is faux therefore necessitating man made throws, but the sheets and pillow cases were lovely clean crisp cotton! Breakfast was a triumph and set us up for the journey ahead. The downsides were its a little out of the way from the centre where the restaurants/bars are (for an evening meal) about a 2km walk or drive. No shower, a large bath with shower attachment but no cubicle. All in all a pleasant stay for 1 night.

Quirky Stop off

The Manoir is easy to find on the road between Cabourg and le Home-Varaville. There aren't many rooms (5?) but the ones that we had were all more than acceptable - better than you'd find in a chain like the Novotel because they were a little quirky. The welcome was good and the breakfast is excellent, which makes you wonder why other hotels can't do better than they do in this respect. Some problems with the Wi-Fi were quickly resolved. Comfortable beds. Small TVs (if that bothers you). Steep stairs though with no lift, which might cause a problem for those less mobile (the steps up to the entrance might also be an issue). Overall, a very nice place to stay.

Better than a chain-style hotel

If you don’t like trains,  don’t become a train driver.  If you don’t like children,  don’t run a school. If you don’t like people don’t open your home as a B&B.  No matter how charming the chambers are; if you’re not,  the outcome will not be happy.  

When we arrived at Manoir de la Marjolaine the electric gates were firmly shut. It was an omen.  No, no, no was going to be the ethos here.  The Manoir has great kerb appeal, a late 19th century villa set in its own gardens, but this was a decoy. 

The local geology is mostly sand so the steep flight of eight or so demi lune stone steps to the front door,  had partially subsided.  You felt they were inclined against you.  The rise was 12 inches per step and with no handrail either,  I very much doubt they would have passed a risk assessment in the UK.   Still the entrance hall had an exquisite pink onyx floor,  [but even the cat jumped at the opportunity to escape once the door was open.]

Meanwhile the owner maintained his advantage from his elevated view. He had opened the gates by some remote device and only appeared to formally greet us once we had swum the moat and stormed the portcullis, so to speak.   It was then that his largess and the grandeur of his establishment, evaporated in an instant. 

With no time to waste on elementary pleasantries he launched full speed into his agenda: keys, breakfast time, the fob for the electric gates, he didn’t make eye contact with me at anytime, just confined himself to my husband, answering his  accent less French with his English. 

Saying, No,  to our request for breakfast at seven o’clock,  he then grabbed our cabin bag,  which we asked him not to do,  and began to ascend the four flights of stairs,  still issuing instructions about the Wi Fi,  over his shoulder, although by time he reached the first floor,  he reverted to French.  He unlocked the door of the ‘Rose’ bedroom and exited as fast as possible.

In a narcissistic effort to impress us with his agility in ascending the four staircases,  he was descending into ignominy as a service provider.
He completely  failed to notice that I am disabled. [ I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease twenty-one years ago.]   It is the greatest ego boost, to think you have not been spotted as a PD sufferer,  but to be completely honest with myself,  it is obvious to even  the most uninformed observer.  There is only one conclusion that I can reach.  He was simply determined not to observe, because we were that most  troublesome of things, customers.

Later on I queried what had taken place between the proprietor and my husband, who made the booking. I found out that  apparently the owner had emailed him and offered him an upgrade to a suite for 40 euro extra, due to a cancelation, [I’m not surprised]  the suite had become available 

As it was the Rose Room was  costing us 90 euro  for what turned out to be a pretty demi-tester and toile de jouy  covered bed,  but the mattress was ancient foam,  the pillows and bolster had seen better days, and worst of all,  were the polyester sheeting and pillow cases which were grey.   The bed was  a very small double,  that should have  been treated as a single.  The hot drink facilities were similarly curtailed to exactly:  two tea bags and two instant coffee pouches, one cup and one mug and surprisingly, one teapot.  The walls were paper thin, just another crude alteration to this fine old house.  [Not a Manoir].

The audacity of the proprietor meant that he never gave us the opportunity to say if we wanted to take the room.  He just assumed we were.  We felt scammed; had it not been 5pm then,   and our ferry departure was 7.30 am the next day,  we would left and found  somewhere else,  our car  would have been better.
