Clean comfortable rooms. On the smaller size. Accepting dogs. Spacious salle de bain. Reservation have to be made for dining. Enjoyable tasty meal. Quality and quantity excellent. All together a pleasant stay. Has to be remembered 

By recommendation 

This is a very friendly hotel with good food and lovely service. We enjoyed the room and its views over the garden / paddock. The evening menu included plenty of variety and the food was well cooked and presented. We stayed for 2 nights having planned a walking / car free day as part of a touring holiday. The 9 mile walk around the shore of the lake proved to be a gentle day out with a selection of cafes to enable refreshment on the way round. If there is a criticism, it is that the hotel claims to have some English speaking staff - we did not meet any and relied on our rusty French. They do offer an English menu though which was much appreciated. Outdoors seating for the bar is limited to some tables at the side of the road. It would be good to have a patio / terrace at the rear of the hotel with a bar service.

Good value and good base for walking.

We went hiking in the Morvan for a week with 2 donkeys and stayed at Les Grillons. The owner was very welcoming. We stayed in a little chalet in the middle on the hotel's ground which was great and close to our donkeys so that our child could enjoy checking on the donkeys from the room.
The restaurant at the hotel offered great breakfast and great dinner with local products. Dont forget to taste the chocolate!

A great stay during our hiking in Morvan with donkeys

We stayed for a night on a last minute whim (we live an hour or so away) and had a lovely time. The hotel is beautiful in its location - the photos of the garden side do not do it justice as it sits high up over the river and looking out over the trees and valleys of the beautiful Morvan. It's calm, sleeping with the window open and listening to the river rushing below was lovely. The room was tiny, and basic, and the stairway was quite badly in need of a refresh, as other reviewers have said, there is no telly (yay!) but none of that was a problem for us. The rest of the hotel, dining room and entrance, and shop are very tasteful and original- they've retained a weathered fresco painted in the 20s by a Chilean painter and have lots of objects on display that relate to the history of the place, but not in a fusty way.
We had dinner here, and the food was excellent- all freshly cooked to order- and they coped with me (vegetarian, which in France is often very misunderstood - despised, even) without fuss or comment! Mr Grumpyolddesigner (who is French) was made up with the local charcuterie. The owner is the chef and also a chocolatier, the chocolates are for sale in the shop and I can heartily recommend them :-) as well as his home made ice cream, which was sublime. The only slight downside was the breakfast, which, after having made a big deal about how everything was fresh and to order on the evening menu, was a bit sad with its prepacked big-brand mini cheeses and special K. Another reviewer here has complained there were no croissants or baguette- true, but remember the location, far away from any boulangerie.There was delicious pain de campagne and home made jam, however, and the coffee was very good too. It just wasn't up to the high expectations we'd had after the dinner- I thought there'd be eggs and cold meats too but there weren't. We will definitely return, and, re the Vegetarian situation, there were quite a few other options close by- pizza, crepes, etc which would be needed for a longer stay as the patron would likely run out of patience quite quickly. I would strongly recommend this hotel for adults but do have my doubts about taking smaller kids there, the menu states "we do not serve fries or ketchup" and the menu was not youngster-friendly at all, unless your kid happens to be a reincarnation of Escoffier.

Full of character

Excellent food. Very helpful and friendly owners. Room basic but view beautiful. Chocolate wonderful. They coped with my gluten free diet very well both at dinner and breakfast! The autumnal colours were stunning. No hairdryer in the room but that's nothing to worry about when the hosts are so friendly and welcoming.
