Stayed 2 nights in March. It's a small hotel in the middle of the village, close to public parking. The room was very nice, with good wifi. Waling distance to restaurants and shopping.  Not much to do in the village, but if you are visiting the area this is a nice place to stay.

Good location and nice room

I went to stay at this hotel on Monday 11 January.  I booked it through Bookings.com and had a confirmation.  We arrived in the town and found the hotel only to find that it was shut!  This was at 4.30pm in the afternoon. There was a telephone number on the confirmation, so we rang it, but didn't get an answer.  We tried the door, sat in the car, tried the door again and then walked around the outside of the hotel where we found another telephone number - which we rang.  A man answered, speaking no English and we only have a limited amount of French, so we couldn't tell what he was saying.  We stopped various people in the street to ask if the hotel was open and many said 7pm.  We went next door to the dentist to ask them if they knew when our hotel would be open and they also said 7pm.  So we went to a nearby restaurant.  In there we ask the waitress if she could write a text in French to the number we had rung to ask when the hotel would open and where was he.  He wrote back giving us a number and saying room 6.  The girl explained that there was a number lock outside the hotel and we needed to put the number in and press the star key and we should get in.  We did this and got in and OMG - it was awful.  The room was falling to pieces.  When you flushed the toilet you got soaked by water coming out of the wash basin.  The wardrobe was a broken hat stand which was propped up by the wall and there was no heating, so I took the blankets off the single bed next to the double and we went to bed in our coats and clothes.  It was terrible.
The next day there was still no one in the hotel, so we went back to the restaurant to have coffee and then went back to our hotel to find lights on in the bar area.  We spoke to the person in broken French/English and explained that we couldn't get in for hours and that the room was a wreck.  He laughed!!  and said we were crazy to think that it was bad and that we had paid £37!  Most IBIS and other stop over hotels are cheaper than our one - and at least you can get in your room, be warm, have a shower, have wifi, be comfortable and get a drink.  Here in the Hotel l'Ecu you had absolutely no comfort, it was freezing cold really really as cold as you can get.  We were in the attic and it was dark, dank, damp, smelly and horrible.  PLEASE DON'T BOOK THIS HOTEL!!

Oh my goodness - this hotel is absolutely TERRIBLE!

Very basic tired room.  Shower facilities in room but were not informed about the toilet being on the landing and subsequently used by other people staying at the hotel.  No one at the hotel on arrival, bar closed with a note on the door with telephone number for guests to ring to gain entry to door up steep stone spiral staircase.  Lovely town but don't go on a Monday as no restaurants open!!!!
Having said this, better than motorway chain.

Convenient stop-over

We turned up, without a booking, to St Amand Montrond looking for a stopover for the night.  This hotel is right in the middle of the lovely village, literally 2 minutes walk from the main square and its selection of restaurants. The hotel is attached to a small bar and has only 4 rooms. Our room was basic, with a shared toilet room with seperate loos for women and men.  The room had a private shower and sink.   The bed was comfortable and the room was very quiet, despite being above a bar.  Breakfast was basic but good and was an extra €5 per person.

Friendly and efficient service.  Not advisable for people with mobility problems as the rooms are up a very old, spiral stone staircase.

Recommended for a stopover if you want a traditional old French hotel rather than a modern block next to the motorway.
