We stayed here whilst snow-shoeing and were quite disappointed with the standard of the room which was no better than the many bunkhouses we have stayed in in the UK and elsewhere.Our room had a balcony with a superb view but the carpet was old, dirty and stained, the bedding was old and of poor quality, the door to the outside was ill-fitting and let in a very cold draught when the outside temperature was minus 7!
The bathroom was poorly-equipped with no shower door or curtain,a broken shower support, old and frayed towels, tiny sachets of soap, no hairdryer BUT there was always plenty of hot water.
The food was good but there was mainly only one young waiter trying to serve everybody.
Breakfast was more substantial than usual for France but, when the granola ran out after 4 days, no more was available - that was our lot!
There was a fireplace in the lounge but, despite a blizzard outside, and although there were lots of logs the fire was lit only once when some guests known to the management arrived for dinner one night.
The boot room was always warm for storage of boots etc.
The owner/manager did not smile once during the week we were there nor did he ever ask if everything was alright.

Food Good, Rooms Poor

We stayed at the hotel mainly for hiking. We got exellent help for finding nice tracks to walk and the hostess even lent us her private map to help us. The food was exellent and so the local drinks and the host really made us feel comfortably. The rooms were clean and with very nice view.
A local sheepdog joined us at a 22km hike the last day of our trip..

Service

Very nice room in this hotel.  It provided a comfortable recovery time after tiny room in a gite the night before. The stay started with a fine draft beer on the terrace overlooking the mountains. Comfortable beds and nice bath. Half pension provided a beautiful dinner and breakfast. Great food and caring presentation. A little French went a long way with the genial hosts.  The picnic lunch we bought for the next day's hike was generous and delicious. The hotel host got us on the bon chemin for the Grand Canal trail alternative that provided a great morning hike on our way to the next stop on the GR58 circuit without going back down to the main valley trail.

After a horrible night in a nearby gite, this hotel felt like paradise.
Staff were friendly, smiley, and helpful. The room was large and clean and comfortable.
And the food in the restaurant was the best we had in our whole trip. The fondu was amazing.
All in all reasonably priced and pretty much perfect. Thankyou!

Absolutely lovely

Being three we got the gîte next to the hotel. So we had a big room, with a small kitchen. Unfortunately the place is outworn and very noisy. One of the staff members was staying in the room next to the gîte and we heard everything he did, said, his radio playing loud... Taking a shower you have to be very careful or the whole bathroom is flooded. Worst of all are the beds: my back was aching for 2 days after one night. Luckily the restaurant is good. WIFI will cost you 2 EUR/day

Stayed a night, our first in St Veran. Parking available nearby and room OK if fairly small for the price and the advertised 2star rating. A bleach(?) stain on carpet in our room doorway did not add to the experience.  No particular sense of being welcome. Dinner OK for the price in the light dining room with valley views. We enjoyed breakfast in the same room the next day, would have been very pleasant but for the noisy table rearrangement being done directly beside us for a quarter of an hour. Hotel public areas fairly tired. No TV in room and wifi strong but not free. Next time we would stay at the Logis de France branded Hotel Les Chalets de Villard.
