It's characteristically French to find a superb quality hotel/restaurant in what appears to be a relatively nondescript town. We stopped one night at St Walfrid en route from the channel coast to Alsace, and it proved to be a really luxurious treat stay. The place has high quality standards throughout, both in the older part of the building and in the newer block, in which was our large and highly impressive beamed bedroom, with excellent shower room. The one-star restaurant has a restrained but highly professional quality, the service meriting particular praise, with a wine list that would take some beating, featuring bottles costing thousands of euros, but sensibly also including interesting and very reasonably priced choices by the glass.

Understated high quality

When entering the hotel lobby, it is obvious that it's a very old but charming building, but the rooms in the new wing are ultra modern and sleek.  We had a very large king room with wonderful bedding and pillows, large windows and many convenient plug ins for recharging.  The bathroom was great with rain shower and fluffy big towels.  A great stay!

A wonderful hotel with modern surprises

Huge rooms, huge bathroom, gorgeous sitting room. The room had gorgeous old beams, the bathroom was bigger than my front room! The decor of the room was sensational, and like all the rooms was themed - mine was local crystal and there was a chandelier lamp taller than me and display cabinets of glassware and beautiful ornaments. The bed was huge too and super, super comfy. The rooms are silent, perfect for slumber, and you only have to go downstairs to the Michelin star restaurant to complete your ideal stay. Classy, luxurious, exquisite - outstanding...

Luxurious, exquisite, superb

One night stop over on my way south, this place lies on the border between France and Germany. Plenty of parking and easy to find. The room was very pleasant and the food and wine was exceptionally good. Friendly staff rounded off a pretty much perfect stay.

Great hotel

Stayed in this hotel to be in center of varies cities. Rooms were clean, breakfast was limited but very tasty (lots of home made). Restaurant is also very nice for dinner and lunch.

Parking and WiFi is free. Town itself is not interesting.

Big clean rooms, great Restaurant 

Astonishing value for money as a hotel. The room was huge, with a very substantial bathroom. Bathwater came out of a ceramic lion head! Really comfortable bed, lots of toiletries supplied, and a view over charming grounds. Only quibble was slightly dodgy wi-fi, which Reception seemed unable to sort out for us.

The restaurant is not cheap, but we had the "pick two dishes from the more expensive five-course menu" option, which came with all sorts of extras - amuse-bouche, intermediate delicacy ("cappuchino of lobster" - tiny but delicious) and "mignardises" with the coffee, all for €42, and all impeccably served. The service, indeed, was a piece of theatre in its own right; nothing was too much trouble and the emphasis was on quiet, efficient elegance, but with flair. 

Outstanding stopover on our way home

Having stayed there before I could see the decline in attention to the rooms while the restaurant is still very good.  It’s adequate and accommodates English just fine but little things like dirty towels in a “clean” room and a weak functioning shower mean I will find somewhere better next time.

“Average” is being generous

The Auberge St Walfrid is in the hands of the same family for 4 generations.The building has its roots in old times, very nice, a real  hotel of charm with tradition.
Rooms are excellent, service very good. The restaurant is rated a Michelin star which maybe slightly overrated, I would rate it a bib gourmand on the evening we visited but this may be different on other days.
Overall a ver nice impression, can firmly recommend.
