Its relative proximity to Calais makes Le Bec au Cauchois a perfect choice for a stopover for any trip to France. The rooms are all individually decorated and have all of the comforts one needs for an overnight stay. They each have their own entrance, motel style, so unloading luggage is especially easy.

There is a lovely view over a small lake at the rear of the property which is right in the heart of the countryside. The minibar deserves a special mention as it contains a selection of both soft and alcholic drinks, all of which are regional, as well as some homemade chocolates and nougat. 

After an excellent night's rest, one can look forward to the breakfast in the morning which one is invited to order the night before, in order to minimise food waste. This is very admirable, as food waste is a pet hate of mine and should be eliminated as much as possible.

The quality of the offering, which is almost entirely homemade, including excellent vienoisserie, really shines through and ensures that a similar gastronomic experience to the dinner the night before is offered to their guests the next morning. 

Who can ask for anything more than a stylish room, which abounds with thoughtful touches, coupled with a truly excellent, high quality breakfast?

A charming place for a stopover

Sometimes there is a suggestion that Michelin stars are awarded too readily in France. Well, that is certainly not the case with Pierre Caillet's Le Bec Au Cauchois.  Resting in a charming Normandy valley overlooking a pretty lake, the dining room is bright but cosy with a modern feel accentuated by ironware statues and tables made by a local artist. So much for the wrapping. The content,, M. Caillet's cooking (not for nothing is he an eminent MOF), is, in short, outstanding. Presentation is artistic but never takes precedence over flavours. Two substantial menus are offered, with shorter, very good value cheaper versions also available.  Locally sourced ingredients are absolutely fresh with vegetables from the garden, seasonal meat and fish, and perfectly ripe cheeses including a wonderful home produced Camembert washed in calvados. One of the stand out dishes featured lightly smoked 'medaillons' of beetroot with just cooked oysters - an unlikely combination but one that surprised with its meatiness and succulence: a touch of genius. All was modern and assured without seeming to try too hard for effect. A five course meal (plus all the bits and bobs, and delicious home made breads and butter) filled but did not bloat! Wines were excellently chosen and reasonably priced. Service was friendly and professional. Worthy, indeed, of its star...and more.

Formidable!

Like a 2 star Michelin but still authentic and convivial restaurant. 
It was a great discovery. The foie gras balls are just amazing but I even prefered the courgettes from the garden. Last but not least, the desert on the cranberry theme was astonishing. Thank you Mr Caillet.

An artistic and flavourish meal

I stopped going to this restaurant just after Pierre Caillet took over because they thought my young kids were upsetting the other guests when they went to play outside and left the door open.

Boy what a mistake I made - sometimes it's best for a young dad to swallow his pride.

When Pierre Caillet took over several years ago, his first menu was unremarkable. Classic French with fresh local suppliers etc. Today he's in another league. 

I had the full tasting menu. It's exceptionally good. Original ideas, stunning presentation, he left me chasing flavours and eager for every new surprise to arrive.

He gets five stars. Even though our evening was far from perfect. The service was slow, we had to pour our own wine from a table too far away to reach, and gaps between courses were sometimes worryingly long. 

Why still five stars? Because he deserves support. 
We found out he has the help of just one sous chef in the kitchen, and we were eating there on perhaps the busiest weekend of the year. The team was clearly stretched, over stretched, to provide the service that this kitchen merits. And he's clearly chasing stars. 

Go, it's outstanding. There's nothing within 40 mins drive on this level.

BUT - leave the kids at home, and ask to sit in the main dining room.

There's no better chef in the area

We stayed 2 night at this marvelous B & B with a 1-Michelin Star restaurant. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and very clean. Each room has a small patio/terrace facing a small lake with swans. An idyllic place! The food & wine list were out of this world. Can't wait to go back there again… It is only 2.5 hours from the Arc d' Triumph.

Excellent small B & B from where Upper Normandy can be explored!

This is the hotel attached to the Restaurant Pierre Caillet (reviewed by me seperately).  The 5 rooms are in an annexe to the resto, each withots own entrance, motel style.  They are comfortable, reasonable size, usual facilities, probably a bit pricey for what they are €95 for our double), but great if you (over)indulge in the resto.  

The sliding windows open onto a small terrace, a lawn and small lake or large pond.  Breakfast can be taken on the terrace.

Breakfast is €12 extra for the basic coffee, croissants and other baked stuff, fresh OJ, with extras available.  All home made stuff, excellent quality, and not bad VFM by current standards.

No particular facilites are offered (no wifi, proper lounge, billiard room); the place is a 'restaurant with rooms', rather than a proper hotel.  It is dog friendly (but the hotel cats are not, particularly)

I wouldn't necessarily rush to stay here again unless I was eating in the resto.  If you do eat in the resto, stay here, though.
