Stopped here to break up a long drive and appreciated a cozy place to spend the night. Decor was a little outdated but quaint, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Right in the center of the city - easy to walk around, but parking is tight.

Quaint little hotel

As of this writing Hotel Merkel is #6 of 6 in Bad Berneck. I cannot fathom how this is possible?! Through a series of unfortunate events, we had to cancel a previous booking and found this place between Munich and Berlin. We came in late and they were very busy but still very friendly and accommodating. The double room was very large with a bottle of sparkling water and a fresh clean bed. The windows opened up to a little town square and a beautiful bell tower lit up on the hill. After we got our room we scrambled in to dinner at 8:25pm, even though they close at 8:30pm. There were still many people in the dining room and they served us full dinner no problem. 
Now, let me tell you why we will be coming back.... The FOOD! If anything came from a jar or can they fooled me. Everything tasted so fresh and the quality was incredible. If you want schnitzel, do yourself a favor and go to a major tourist zone and find some fried schnitzel. If you want authentic, real, high quality german food come here. Having a german mother in law I know what roladen and sauerbraten should taste like. These were out of the park stellar. The onion soup was fresh made and delicious, and the blaukraut (which I would gladly accept from a can on most brats) was so flavorful and almost sweet, without the normal bitterness. 
I cannot believe we happened on this place. Do yourselves a favor and come visit soon. I know we will be doing the same as soon as we are back in Germany!

I will make a trip to Germany for this hotel

Beautiful family run Gasthaus near the park within walking distance to several restaurants. Lovely German town. Our visit was great and hospitality was spot on. There was rushing stream located right outside the balcony to our room. Very refreshing!

Great place in the center of town.

We felt priced out of accommodation in Bayreuth proper and were willing to drive.  The Merkel met our needs and wasn't bad, but travelers should probably keep looking before booking space here.  Dingy breakfast, average rooms, unexpectedly difficult parking.  Mr. Merkel also has trouble with American-style credit cards, the kind that use a signature rather than a number code.  His problem becomes YOUR problem.

Mediocre might be the best you can do during the Festspiel

We arrived late without a reservation but that was no problem. The kitchen was closed and the bar was about to close. Despite that they were able to serve us some light food, which was really appreciated. Breakfast buffet was fine, but be aware that they close early (before 9). Free parking. 

Friendly and service minded

This guesthouse is simply charming. We chose it due to the proximity to Bayreuth and did not regret a single moment. Bad Berneck itself is a very cosy and quiet place. The guesthouse/hotel is small and evidently family-run. The people are helpful and friendly. The interior is very 80's which I found quite cute. Our room was spacious and clean. The food in the restaurant was simply delicious and the local beer was to-die-for. I highly recommend this place.
