My wife and I have been looking forward to our trip to the Chiemsee which had been great so far - perfect summer weather and the beautiful Bavarian landscape at and around the lake. We also booked us a room at a hotel directly at the shore of the lake. To take advantage of the hotel's location we paid the EUR15-upgrade of a room with "side lake view" to "lake view". However, you can imagine our disappointment when we opened the balcony door of our room and looked directly at another neighbouring house. Only when we stepped out on the balcony and rotated ourselves by 90 degrees we got a glimpse of the lake. We clearly got the "side lake view" room but were charged the higher rate of the upgrade. Confronting the manager we were told that there is another "secret" category of room, "frontal lake view", which cannot be booked online but one has to call the hotel for that. Interestingly, there are no photos online illustrating the meaning of the different categories. One might therefore think that these have been purposely omitted to mislead clients? In any case, purposely or not, this is not good business practice we believe.

At 9pm refused to serve diner .

Shameful

The Chiemsee is an area of stunning natural beauty and landscapes and certainly worth a visit for a few days to walk, relax and enjoy what this beautiful area has to offer. However don’t stay at the Landgasthof Schalchenhof  just outside Gstadt, if you value friendly service from all the staff, need to use wifi or pay by credit card or just prefer not to be treated like an errant school child with no respect for their rules, rather than a paying guest. 
Sadly our experience wasn’t a good one, despite the fact that some of the staff were very nice and the hotel is attractive and located in a lovely setting. The wifi didn’t work well and they have a strange rule about only 2 devices per room so I couldn’t get a password to use my tablet as we had already been given 2 passwords for our mobile phones!! On top of that the wifi kept disconnecting every 2 minutes and the download speed was very slow. When I complained I was told that the wifi worked perfectly well in the office! ( No offer of another password was forthcoming, nor did the English speaking receptionist offer to contact their provider to see if the problem could be solved) I was made to feel that the problem was mine and might have been due to the fact that I’m some kind of idiot who doesn’t know how to use wifi! However, other guests also complained about it. 
The same ‘receptionist’ was also very impolite to us when we inadvertently had her called to reception after it was closed! We didn’t realize nor expect that the reception closed at 6pm. Having found the door closed, we were reading the sign on the door which gave opening/closing times when a member of staff opened the door and asked us if we needed something (nice of her!) Unfortunately she didn’t speak English and my German wasn’t up to the mark. She told us to wait and went to fetch the ‘receptionist’ who spoke English.  The latter was extremely irate at being called to reception out of hours (it was about 8pm) and berated us repeatedly for disturbing her ‘spare time’ as she called it! 
The following morning I went to ask to speak to the manager but discovered that the extremely rude English speaking receptionist IS the manager ( or so she told me) so it seemed my only recourse was to write a review ( which is what I’m doing) in the hope that in some way the lady in question learns that being impolite to guests in a hotel isn’t good for PR!
Finally a couple of other things potential guests may want to know, the hotel restaurant closes at 8pm which for non-German guests is rather early; they only put mineral water in the rooms on arrival, but none was forthcoming on the other days ( which we felt was rather mean, given it’s not a budget hotel!) and they don’t accept credit cards, which we were unaware of as it wasn’t stated on our Booking.com printed confirmation so we had to go and get cash from an ATM in the village.

Unfortunately our stay was spoilt by the attitude of the English speaking receptionist/manager!

We drove around the lake looking for somewhere to stay. Luckily for us they were all full until we reached this little gem. Excellent value, superb setting and wonderfully friendly staff. Philip was especially helpful and attentive. Food amazing - Sunday we were lucky enough to eat on the terrace.  Philip suggested appropriate dishes and also kept my husband supplied with a good variety of German beers. The whole place had a feel good factor and we could not fault it. 

So glad others were full

The Landgasthof Schalchenhof  is Germany's greatest hotel. It is sited right on the lake, and is just a wonderful place to spend a holiday or just a couple of days as you pass through. The premises is just 1st class. We ate outside on the terrace all the time, with a wonderful view of the lake. The food is very good, I ate the fish caught in the lake, it was so nice, I could not stop eating it ! The staff do not speak good English, but try a little German and their English dramatically improves. Take a look at my photos inside and out, you will see it really is a very special place, my favourite hotel and restaurant in Germany.
