We booked Hotel Union for the central location and positive reviews but could not have asked for a better experience for our first trip to Cochem, which is only 2hrs from where we reside in Kaiserslautern, Germany. We stopped by Bernkastel-Kues on the way to Cochem and were running late, so we called the hotel to let them know our ETA 10:30pm. They said no problem and thanks for letting them know. Upon arrival, our reservation was already printed out and key prepared. We received instructions about the front door and breakfast. Once we dropped off our bags, we came downstairs and Mr Moussa asked where we were parked. We went outside and he gave us advice on the best spot to leave the car for a few days and chatted w/ us about everything there is to see and do in Cochem. The next AM when we were having breakfast, Ms Moussa greeted us and asked what time we arrived and how we slept. We were so surprised at how much the owners and staff cares about us and when we told them we do not eat pork, they even offered us some cold cuts in chicken. We also checked off everything on our list for hiking, eating, cable car and shopping the following day. The next AM we were greeted again and the staff delivered coffee/OJ/chicken cold cuts. The staff give their guests space to relax and enjoy the amazing view of the Mosel! It is central to everything and the river cruises are literally in front of the hotel, bars and restaurants and shopping in every direction.

EXCEPTIONAL STAFF, LOCATION & COCHEM EXPERIENCE

We had a good experience in this restaurant. We shared a very nice smoked salmon dish with horseradish cream. I had a very good pizza with a crispy base and just the right heat. My husband had a very good trout with almonds. Wine could have been colder and certainly should have been served in an ice bucket with ice in it. Service in Germany is what it is. You never know what your going to get.  

Looking over The Mosel River.

Lovely friendly hotel, hosts very welcoming.As soon as we arrived we were told about paying at reception for a parking ticket that would last the length of our stay. Which was for the multi storey car park about a 5 minute walk away. There is a few parking spaces outside the hotel but pot luck if one is available and you have to pay for a daily ticket anyway.
No lift which was fine for us but if you are elderly or disabled could be a problem. 
Rooms very roomy with a view over the Moselle river, beds comfortable. Good shower with a hair-drier in bathroom. Wifi didn't reach 2nd floor but wasgood in lounge.
Breakfast very good, usual continental with a good selection of meats, cheeses, eggs & yoghurt  etc.... staff very friendly and helpful indeed.
One problem we had as it was in August and very hot was wasps in the sugar dispensers. Just a tad annoying at times! 
Hotel has a great view being right on the Moselle promenade and within walking distance of all the shops,bars and restaurants.
On checking out we were handed a free bottle of Moselle wine with the hotels own label which was a lovely farewell gift.
would revisit if ever in Cochem again.

Staff: friendly and very concerned about your well being. Everybody tries to provide a familiar and cordial atmosphere.

Breakfast: average standard with everything you need. Nothing special.

Hotel: like most of the hotels in Cochem this building is cleary past its best days. The rooms are very old and the quality of the interior reminded me of a typical german flea market / garage sale. The bed in my room had the style of regular dorm in a youth hostel and there was a mattress lying next to it which definitely dated back to the 1980s (see the picures). The whole hotel is loaded of cheap romantic-style furniture reproductions and corny oil paintings (see pictures). Gave me the feeling of being in a haunted house from time to time.

Rather run down and overpriced / gloomy atmosphere

The restaurant at hotel Union is the place to definitely avoid in Cochem. The food is lousy, the service horrible and the wine list has almost nothing to offer.
I asked for the difference between two different Riesling wines - obviously from two different producers clearly stated in the menu. The answer: It's two different producers...How can you have a such ignorant waiter in the motherhood of German wine areas?
What is the difference between a Porsche and a Volvo? Two different producers???
There are plenty of other nice restaurants in Cochem, like the Hotel Am Hafen on the other side of the bridge where you are also gifted with a nice view of the castle.

Avoid, avoid, avoid

The only reason for which we stayed in this hotel was the parking lot we found in front of its door. The town was overcrowded by cars. The room was big, humid, dirty,
Smelling, depressing. No elevator. The breakfast not German at all.
The manager or owner (not German) was impolite towards my wife. I didn't see him. 80 €.
