We had a nice room for 3 on the top floor, it was a little old fashioned but perfectly fine. It's very close to the castle so we had a walk up after dinner to watch the sunset which was beautiful. The hotel is quite remote and a good 30 minute walk to Königstein and probably 50 minutes to get back up the steep forest path. We ate dinner at the hotel and it was well priced and OK with good service. The waitress in the morning was very helpful and friendly and she also helped out when we asked for towels on arrival - there were 2 bath towels and no hand towels for 3 of us staying. Breakfast was good with a nice selection. All in all it was a convenient and cosy stop off on our walking route in a lovely location.

Cosy but basic

Some aspects of the hotel were particularly poor. There were flies in the bedroom, at dinner and at breakfast. There was only one thin, rather tatty towel each. Dinner was supposedly till 8pm, but as ours was "included" we were asked to be down by 7pm and were not given a choice of menu, we had a tepid cabonara and a pannacotta. There was an overpowering smell of potpouri.  A shame as a lovely location in meadows very near the walk up to the castle. The corridors are dark, the automatic lights dont always click on. Very eccentric collection of kitsch items in the public rooms. You sit where your name place is at breakfast, which was ok except for the flies. A kind and friendly hard working waitress.

Rather eccentric

The hotel is located in Swiss Saxony, a beautiful hiking area in Germany. Therefore, we paid top price and expected more value. The room was barebones but clean. The service was mediocre although breakfast was plentiful. The manager was usually absent. Wifi didn't work, and while we don't watch TV, we noted that the TV screen was the size of a computer. To make our experience complete, we were charged 8 euros for three phone calls we couldn't receive because the receptionist was unable to put them through. We do not recommend this hotel.

Disappointing experience

A visit to this corner of eastern Germany - known as Saxon Switzerland - threw up a mammoth surprise.  The biggest fortress you will ever see at Koenigstein.  Nestling below the fortress we discovered a small multi-storey car park and across the road this hotel.

Whilst we didn’t stay here – we did opt for an evening meal in the garden.  Simple, excellent value and prompt – we would recommend this hotel if you ever find yourself in this somewhat off the beaten track part of Europe.
