We booked this place more or less last minute and were lucky to get a room. Beautifull location in the middle of the true BLACK Forrest, easy to be reached and not too far from the A5. It's in fact a 'table d'hotes'. Half board included (fixed menu, amazing fresh ingredients, mainly grown in their own - truly beautifull - garden!). Very friendly host, good beds, very clean in an amazing setting. We were truly sorry to have booked here only one night, but we will definately be back, at least for a week! Highly recommanded!!

Perfection!

A few weeks ago we stayed in a Belgian chateau where perfection unfortunately met arrogance instead of hospitality. They accidentally ran out of prosecco, the hosts said, but were ‘willing’ to bring a bottle of champagne instead.  
Thank you, but no thank you! 

Ironic destinies often do make us smile, so we remembered last week in the German Black Forest, where the prosecco was everything but absent. The same was true for gin & tonic, elderflower syrup, cassis liquor and Pimm’s, the famous drink that shows up at every British event of any significance, the host Thomas, a former manager of international 5 Star Hotels, knows.  

Not that we get to know that part of his background, as his hallucinating curriculum stays discretely hidden under distinguished modesty. And that is exactly what makes this B&B so different from all the places that are owned by inventors of vanity.  

Not here, however, where Andrew arrived in his car from the UK six years ago, accompanied by a cat as well as a box full of baby chickens and absolutely no idea how he could put the stove on in order to heat the beautiful house on the forested mountainside.  

After years of hard work and love of nature the Arch of the Moosbach Garden transformed into an English garden paradise where chickens, geese, sheep, border collie Luna, maltezer Chico and tomcat Bramble must think they have already died and have landed in heaven.  

As the peaches, courgettes and other freshly grown fruits and vegetables do not land on the guests’ plates themselves, Chef patron Thomas is constantly busy with an obvious passion for what he is doing. Although he pretends it is all just a piece of cake, everyone with some kitchen experience knows how much time and effort are needed to make your own goat cheese soufflés, brownies, cassis ice cream, perfectly grilled meat and fish, bread, jam, chutney, brioche, pesto and pasta.  

After a copious breakfast Thomas is generous with hiking advice and itineraries that he is glad to print especially for his guests. As no effort is too much for, he ensures his visitors enjoy a wonderful Schwarzwald stay.  

Somewhere between five and six thirty irresistible kitchen aroma is reaching the guest rooms, inviting their temporary residents to the garden for the pre-dinner drinks. After the aperitif amongst the flowers and a chat about the day, Thomas disappears into the kitchen to put the finishing touch to dinner. Four exquisite courses, accompanied by white and red wine, all included in a half board stay, as well as the organic origin of most of the delicious foods that are served. 

Where all these culinary masteries and savoir vivre come from, guests can only guess, as only a rare slip of tongue makes the attentive listener suspect the stunning background of these two exceptional hosts.

Surrounded by echinacea, dahlia, sunflower and old varieties of roses Luna enthusiastically  

follows you with her toy, that she hopefully drops near your feet. There is always energy for an extra walk, she must think, for hikers who had planned to do twelve miles but ended up doing eighteen, as signs are not always clearly visible for those who like to gaze over the panoramic views on the route to Gengenbach, Nordrach, Biberach or Oberharmersbach. Bacchus seems to feel at home everywhere in the home country of quality and Gemütlichkeit.  

Even at the Glaswaldsee that surprisingly enough still as pristine as it used to be twenty years ago, recalls distant memories.  

It is a fact that some things change, but many remain the same. 

As is the case for the intrinsic value of authenticity in a place where one can just be one’s true self.

An English garden paradise im Schwarzwald

I found this on google after looking for somewhere that was off the beaten track, and what a perfect find it was!
The hotel is at a dead end on a small tarred road leading up into the mountains in the Black Forest. Our hosts were Andrew, Thomas & Rosel and nothing was too much trouble for them. 
There is ample private parking. Own transport is essential.
It was a lovely summer’s evening when we arrived so we had dinner (pork schnitzel, chips & salad which was wonderful) and some drinks on the terrace outside overlooking the valley.
There are beautiful gardens on the premises with an abundance of summer flowers, and a lovely country feeling with sheep in the distance and ducks and chickens – fresh chicken and duck eggs are served for breakfast.
Our room was immaculate, clean, spacious & bright with a lovely balcony overlooking the valley. Flat screen TV with satellite television. WiFi.
Tea and coffee provided in the room with a kettle. Mini bar fridge.
Lots of walks in the area in the Black Forest.
We had breakfast on the restaurant balcony overlooking the valley & forest. All the food was very good.
Having been traveling for a while we were desperate to do some laundry. This is not offered as a service but our hosts went out of their way and accommodated us.
English and German spoken fluently.
We stayed 2 nights. 
I cannot recommend this enough for anyone wanting a wonderful comfortable home-from-home place to stay at that is away from the hustle and bustle of tourism. If ever we pass that way again I would not even consider staying anywhere else. Thank you Andrew, Thomas & Rosel!

A hidden gem

A wonderful and peaceful place at the end of the road leading into the depth of the Black Forrest. It is wonderfully kept, the small restaurant has typical local dishes with some international influence. Just perfect. Everything is typical Black Forrest style and authentic in every aspect. A wonderful garden for sunny days is available.

Romantic Hideaway 

We stayed at Gasthof Pension Moosbach for 8 days at the end of May/beginning of June. We were looking for somewhere where we could go walking and have a restful holiday. This was very central - being very accessible from both Strasbourg (our choice) and Baden Baden. You will need a car as the hotel is 10 minutes from the nearest town and the easiest way to get to Moosbach from the airport is by hire car. Be aware that there is no petrol station at Strasbourg and if your hire company requires that you bring the car back full the nearest petrol is some way from the airport.
The hotel itself sits overlooking a majestic view of pine forest and mountains which you can enjoy from the balcony or terrace - or if you are lucky enough to be staying -from your room balcony. We had room 3 which was very spacious and had everything we could wish for including soft fluffy towelling robes hung in the wardrobe, multimedia tele, tea and coffee, fridge and spare blankets should you need them.
Breakfast each morning was fresh rolls, meats, juice, tea/coffee and homemade preserves (which can be bought on the online shop). We were very fortunate to have beautiful weather to have breakfast overlooking the stunning views. Dinner is freshly cooked accompanied with crisp salad and although not a particular favourite, the speciality of the house are steaks which were cooked to perfection.

If desserts and cakes are your thing then the rhubarb cake, banana cheesecake, black forest gateau and chocolate brownies are to die for.

The owners both speak excellent English so no problem if your German is rusty or non existent!!

In essence, if you are looking for a restful holiday in beautiful surroundings where you are made to feel most welcome and nothing is too much trouble then you will have difficulty beating Moosbach. We shall certainly be returning in the near future.
