Saalfeld is not a tourist destination, but it is well situated in Thuringia and is a pleasant little town to spend a day or so and it has plenty of nice eating places to choose from - the Rathaus is especially atmospheric. This Pension was not difficult to find being just off the main street and very close to the Market Place, but the unprepossesing exterior didn't look terribly attractive and our first imlpression as we entered the little front bar crowded with locals drinking beer and playing cards, was that we had made a bad choice. However the proprietoress (German-speaking only) was friendly and showed us to our room which, although small, was spotlessly clean with a nice bathroom and self-catering facilities. The room looked out over a quiet lane and  the gardens of nearby houses. There was a pleasant outdoor seating area for warm days. Parking was a bit difficult, but was easy once we had mastered the one-way system. However,  the hotel's parking was full, so we had to park in the market place overnight. Breakfast was served down in the medieval and atmospheric cellars and was a very comprehensive spread of eggs, meats, cheeses and various breads and cake amongst the other goodies. With good coffee we were set up for the day. At a very reasonable 54€ per night we thought it great value for money and would definitely return.

Surprising guest house with local bar

I stayed here with my family and choose it because it had gotten reasonably good rating on booking.com. But that must be fake rating. 
The place is filthy and the beds and pillows smelled horrible of sweat and drunk peoples breath. The beds linen were ripped with cigarette burn marks. Doors locks were broken and the tiles in the bathroom were crushed in several places. 
Curtains were broken and stained with undefined red stains. 
If it wasn't that we arrived so late, kids were tired and there were no other places near, we wouldn't ever have sat foot here. 
The bar that were downstairs, that belonged to this pension were crowded with drunk Russian loud speaking/shouting men and felt not safe for a family. 
Breakfast was acceptable, but not more than that.
Staff was arrogant and not very service minded. We got the feeling that they didn't want any guests. Didn't speak english but that was the least problem with this place.
I will upload images i took in the room so you can judge for your self. We wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here. It was really really awful for anyone, especially for a family with kids.
