As always in the East, huge portions of a very cheaply made dish coupled with unpretentious and sometimes even simple pompous serving. So here I'm not going again! And should I write more? In the future I'm going to the Greek or Italian or Chinese, but at least it's served reasonably.

Well, that's it.

After a very good city tour, we returned (with 12 people pre-ordered) to the Old Schweriner Schankstuben. The name promises a lot - unfortunately too much. The service was slightly overwhelmed. Despite the small map, why at all New Year's Day - noon, after everyone had chosen something, two dishes were no longer available. The sparkling wine sticks from the outside to the cups and after the ordered but incorrectly brought tea was advertised, there was no apology but a patchy remark.

Little card - big disappointment

When we went home on the 17th of November 2015, we entered the snack bar due to the inviting appearance. Unfortunately, the food did not keep the promise of the beautiful façade. The crunchy half duck with the beautiful name turned out to be a tough dry bird with a slender skin. The red cabbage tasted peculiar, my wife refused to try it. The best were the cloves, which were probably not made by ourselves. We ate the ox cakes in the port restaurant Borwin in Rostock in excellent quality. Unfortunately, the hotel could not eat. The kitchen turned out to be very small. Since we wanted the smallest of the cloves, so we had a little extra, which was then calculated with 50 cents.

As an old lady-in-waiting, I wanted to have lunch with my family at this restaurant on October 10, 2015. It was immediately remarkable that many staff were standing behind the counter and having conversations. After ordering, we looked around in the gas chamber and discovered a lot of dirt (many old, big spider webs over the tables, dirt on the bench, many dead flies in the curtains). We canceled the food and left this unwelcoming place. Shame! This restaurant was once one of the best restaurants in my hometown. Regina Müller

Disappointment at Lunch

The Alt Schweriner Schankstuben is within walking distance of all the sights and also has a very pleasant bar and restaurant.

However, the single room that I stayed in was not particularly comfortable as it was cramped. The mirror was hidden behind the wardrobe amd the TV set took up all the space on the desk,

The corridor was also very dark, the furniture is old, and there is also no lift.

If you only need to stay for one night, it's okay. But if you want to stay longer, then I would recommend to find somewhere else.

Good location but the single rooms are a bit cramped

The hotel is very centrally located in the old town. The lady who was responsible for breakfast and service was very friendly. She was very accommodating. The breakfast itself gave no reason to complain. But then it was. After we were greeted relatively unfriendly at the reception by a young man, we went through a staircase packed with many spiders to room No. 10. A bed did not seem to be freshly furnished. Under the bed ceiling were hairs. Also on the floor of the bathroom. The floor of the carpet did not give the overall impression that there was a lot of dust working there.

Recommended: in an attractive, old part of Schwerin, and with an excellent restaurant; clean, comfortable rooms; good breakfast; reasonably priced; friendly staff.

Well worth a visit

During our two week stay in Germany, having stayed at six different hotels, this was by far the worst of the lot.  We just found the hotel by showing up at the door, since it is located right in the city center, in a cute little square (though unfortunately filled with parked cars like many cute city squares in Germany, we found).  

Upon entering, the staff was curt and unfriendly and did not speak a word of English, so I had to use my pathetic German to get us into a room.  Not really a problem, but they should know the basic hotel vocabulary to offer a room.  It was once we got close to the room that the problems truly started, though.  

After using the very complicated set of keys to enter what seemed like Fort Knox, we got to the hall where our room was and it absolute REEKED.  It was like the entire hotel smelled as if you had stuck your head into one of those big frying machines, filled with boiling oil and potatoes sucking up the grease.  We hoped this stench would be limited to the ventilation-challenged hallways, but unfortunately it permeated our room, as well...and by the end of our stay, it had permeated all of our belongings, and even us.  When we left the hotel the next morning, my clothes smelled like a baggie of McDonald's french fries.  Opening the window did nothing to help, because basically the hotel's excellent restaurant (as noted by the other reviewer) has its exhaust vents aimed directly at all of the windows of the hotel!

The sources of pungence were not limited to the kitchen, however.  We also had to seal the bathroom shut, since the toilet had a severe plumbing problem, causing the whole bathroom to smell like a giant sewer.  If we left the bathroom door open, this stench was strong enough to cover up the potato cookery smell, but we preferred food odors to poo.  Flushing the toilet required 3-4 tries for full effectiveness, as well, though the time spent waiting for the tank to re-fill was more than enough to observe the pile of hair, dust and dirt behind the door, at the corners of the shower and under the cheap plastic stool left for convenience.  

Just to wrap up the bad experience, the TV channels listed by the hotel included several in English, none of which was actually programmed into the TV, and it had the usual torturous German bedding:  the comforter/duvet/doona which is not apt for use by anyone taller than 180 cms and way too warm in the summertime.

To concede it a few positive points, I'd say the restaurant looked good (though we were too nauseated to try it after putting up with the Pommes Frites pungency), and it was right downtown.  The nearby Yugoslavian restaurant Adria was wonderful as an alternative dining option.


Should be re-named "Frying Pan Hotel" or "Boiling Oil Inn"

We have stayed in this small hotel three times. Two of them with the purpose to enjoy the Schweriner Christmas Market. A wonderfull, cosy and happy festival in honour of the Christkindl. The hotel is very good, friendly staff, clean rooms with good facilities and a very nice restaurant - or rather two different kinds. One serves delicious meals in international style and the other is a typical German restaurant, or should I say Bierstube with a short list of typical German courses, like eisbein mit sauerkraut, kasseler rostbraten or Bockwurst mit kartoffelpuree.
The hotel is situated right in the middle of the city with a vue over a small marketplace and just 1 minutes walk to the big marketplace, the Dom and just another minute to the pedestrian streets.
Schwerin is a nice and cosy city with a lot to offer tourists, You will find lakes, parks, churches, a genuine castle (seat of the local government) lots of shops and restaurants and above all - very friendly and happy "Schweriners". If they are so all the year round, or if it's the Glühwein from the Christmas market that has this effect is hard to say. We can just say - visit Schwerin and Alt Schweriner Schankstuben.
